VW TDI in a fj40?

Is this a possibility? I have not done any research but was thinking about it the other day for my 80. I would imagine the HP and torque figures would be too low to move a tankership like the 80, but perhaps would be good for a 40? Anyone look into this swap?

I also think that finding a wrecked TDI is somewhat possible now?

any insight would be appreciated.

would be possible, I think the bolt pattern is the same as a VR6 (and that has been done here on Mud) but you better have a lot of gears. Go on and get outa that box!!

They have done this w/ minitrucks w/ good results. There is a company that sells adapters for this. ACME ADAPTERS - About

If you're referring to mine, it was and AFC block. Different pattern from VR6.

a TDI would be fine, but a little light on the overall numbers without regearing and dual cases. My AFC pulls great now with 4.88s on 35s. dual 2.82 cases.

Sure it's possible. But you'll need a wheelbarrow full of money.
The V10 TDI from a Touareg 4x4 will run about 10,000USD for a used one w/ ancillaries. And then there will be adapters and mounts. And a custom chip from Rocketchip will be needed to get the engine to run without the instrument cluster and immobilizer.

Although a lightweight 350hp diesel would be amusing....

OK, sounds more like a minitruck project.

I've thought about putting a Dodge/Mercedes Sprinter diesel engine into a 40. Those in-line 5 engines get around 22-25 mpg, and that's hauling around a huge van.

Yes, I was thinking of your build when I mentioned the VDubb swap, thanks for clarifying.

I dont think its enough power.

I'll recommend the swap to you (I keep saying it... hoping someone does it), Use the Audi 5 cyl diesel that came in volvo sedans in the 80s. They used the same transmission as a toyota mini truck, so you can use the inchworm toyota auto trans adapter to a mini truck transfer case, then a marlin rockbox setup to the LC case. Seems easier to me, with a motor that is easier to find in wrecking yards for a decent price.

The VW/Audi IDI diesel engines are semi-modular, sharing some parts throughout the 3,4,5,6 cylinder versions.
The 5 cyl was only available in US in the Audi 5000, for a few years, roughly 79-82. They were NA the first year or two, then TD was offered optionally. TD was available longer in Canada.

Volvo bought the inline 6 version of the engine from VW truck. It is 2.4L, but only ~80HP NA in the 240 body, and 105HP TD in the 740 body.

Both diesel versions were backed up w/ the Volvo M46 cast iron toploader four speed w/ optional electric O/D. The ZF slushbox was available optionally.

The B23 gas engine family, which is a volvo design engine, is available w/ the same Aisin/Warner automatics that were in minitruck. The manual trannys are again the M46 or M47 5speed. There have been some conversions done to install the toyota supra 5-speed behind the highly modified turbo gas engines. But there is no reason for a conversion BH to swap a toyota tranny behind the diesel, because the diesels are nowhere near the limits of power for the cast-iron Volvo tranny.

There are adapters available to bolt a toyota or sammy transmission behind a VW 3 or 4 cylinder, but there are none AFAIK to adapt the 5or 6 cylinder to a toyota transmission. The two engine families are very differnt looking at the ends of the blocks.

Is this too far off-topic?
Sorry.

DO NOT use those engine, its crap -- REALLY crap. They blow the top faster then you can replace them. If you want to install a TDI from VW/Audi. Get the one from 1995 and up. In my opinion they are still to weak to put in to your 4x4

You are much better off getting the Toyota 3B engine and mounting a turbo and intercooler on it. The powerband and RPM will fit your offroad needs much better than the highreving TDI's you mentioned before.

The 3B engine is cheaper as well, if you add the spareparts, gear, repaircs ect..
