GM type 2 or gen 2 power steering (SBC)

I have a SBC and saginaw power steering, 3 bolt box

i was wondering if theres any improvements on the later style i believe there type 2 or gen 2 power steering pumps? the brackets are cheap (60 bucks) and making a remote res. could be easy.

does anybody know the output at idle, anybody run it?

the rebuilt units are around 40 and you can get high performance ones aren't that bad either....

I originally went to the auto-droid store and went through all the pumps to find a gen2 that looked like it would do what I wanted, installed the pump but it whined considerably under load. Thought it might be the pump, but before I could take it back I found a used Sweet racing pump and used it instead. All the noise went away and it has worked great. I have a SBC with the short H20 punp. The PS pump is mounted to the drivers side head with a Howe remote res. I'm using a FJ60 PS box. Makes for a very clean set up IMOP. With the short H20 pump I have had good luck with the high passenger mount alternator bracket.

Be sure to factor in pulley price between buying new and used. My used was $99 including pulley and fittings.

OK that is too funny! The avatar is from one of the runs when I was in Alaska, a much colder time, with legit things to wheel on, and places to go that wasn't tresspassin'.

I am sure you can use the PS pump with either water pump. Here is a link to a possible solution.

Power Steering

If you want to increase flow at idle unscrew the valve the pressure hose threads into. It's about 1 1/2" long and has a plunger and spring behind it. Hold it up to the light and look down the center and you'll see a small hole. Drill that out a couple gage sizes larger. Makes a big difference at idle

yeah i know how to change the sag. pump i have now.. but i'm talking about the gen 2, which i believe is two stage pump... i think its around 2.5 GPM at idle and less at a higher speed...

I've had no problems, the system has a built in pressure relief so the pump will never produce too much pressure. This is a common modification by the 'high performance' steering builders
