The axles were getting beat up so decided to fabricated some axle protection. Went to the local metal yard and picked through some rim stock. Used a long 3 inch wide piece of plate and started cutting, bending and welding. I welded some quarter twenty bolts to the rear of the axle housing as mounting point. Then used exhaust coupler ubolts as a attachment to the third member.
Let me know what you guys think. Last edited by mrqtipp; 03-08-08 at 09:20 AM. |

The axle skid plate is removable in seconds. Made an access point to the drain plug. I also drilled a whole in the bottom of the axle skid plate to monitor lubricant leaks..

That is totally sweet! You have me thinking now about putting some plate under my slider outriggers to make a solid surface......

The wierdest thing happened to the SM420. The trannie started making a god awefull grinding sound. Was able to make it back to CA. When I pulled out the trannie I was not able to get the adapter plate allens bolts out. I put some heat to the plate being carefull not to warp the adaptor plate. I still couldnt get the allens bolts out. So I took the BFH to the trannie.

It turns out when I though I got take 3 different sm420s and mate them together utilizing the best parts from each one just doesnt work. The snchros all looked good and the gears looked good but I did not learn that different years have subtle differences. I was able to find a brand new SM 420's that still had the cosmoline all over. The trannie was made for the military gamma goat. Pretty cheap and since the install I havent had a problem. Next build will have a later model trannie (NV4500)

They are Alcan springs with Orbit eyes. The Orbit eye has the ability to flex 38 degress in all directions. The springs are great.

nice right up bro! i will say helping build that rig was one of the funnest things i have done learned a ton. i love the time lapse photography effect the thread gives, looks like it was done over night! make no mistake my freinds there was a lot of blood, sweat and -well repair and dispair involved as it should be. for a leaf sprung rig that thing has some insane flex good call on the alcan springs. post up some off road pics the static shots dont do it justice. now get your arse over to the east coast and help me tweek my junk
