Pro Comp Xterrain vs. GdYR MT/R

Either 40x13.5R17 MTRs or 40x13.5R16 Pro Comp Xterrain.
They are going on an 80 series that is a "trail rig" BUT I drive to all the trails so they needs to have some road manners. I have 38" toyos on now and they are great.

I wheel mostly in the rocks, virtually no mud, snow a few times a year when I go to the mountains, and rain when it rains, which until this past week was not an issue in So Cal. thnx

I hate X-Terrains. I have watched them on rigs for years and they suck so bad.

The SUPER sticky ones that the comp guys run even suck.

MTR's are your friend.

i have the 35 in x terrains - bought them during the buy 3 get one free-with free shipping sale -{cheapskate). They work great on the road, in the mud make sure your winch works.

X2 For MTRS Good on and off the trail. If X-Terrains get wet ot you get a litttle mud on them you are done. My mini had a set of Pro-Craps and I gave them away. Total Waste of money

Iroks in the 39.5x13.5x17 variety, the Iroks do not seem to suffer from the Interco out of round syndrome so loosing your teeth driving on the road with them is not going to be a no added cost option.

i voted xterrains, but then reilized you mean the gay ones, the extream muds are very decent, i ran mtrs before i and i would say they are totaly on par. but then i do not know what they come in for big stuff. i wish they would make some decent sizes.

Goodyear says they will be adding to there list of sizes this year. I really want a 37 13.50 on 15. that would be sweet

THe thought of Iroks has crossed my mind, but I've heard that the rubber chunks especially with on road driving, also heard that they are not great for driving a heavy rig down the road on. I just can't shake the 750miles I drive to and from the CON each year. I also like 16" rims since i have a set already and the MTrs only come in 17" = selling the old 16's and getting new ones.

I run unbalanced 37" Irok radials on my 80 with no chunking in several thousand kilometeres of gravel and highway travel. Lots of rig rockets up here run them as well without any problems under 8K+ F-350's.

The 17"s seem to run "squarer" than some of the balloon like 15"s, I have not personally seen the 16" version so I cannot comment on its balloon characteristics.

I have run X-Terrains and personally would put them in the Thornturd category, IE buy them for looks but not actual performance.

I'm for MTR's for sure, or irocks. Irocks are a great trail tire, but are kind of soft for the street...

What makes the IROK grip off road is the soft rubber which also will wear faster on road. You give up some tire life for good grip. I drive 10 hours on 36" bias IROKs to go wheeling and have been running these tires two seasons with very little wear. If you put on lots of road miles you are going to wear down an IROK faster than a harder rubber compound tire. I am willing to live with the trade off since the IROKs do great for the conditions I wheel.

I've kept silent on this thread as I'm hoping to sell those two 40" MTR's as spares - and well, I wouldn't want to be biased, right? However, in following this thread, and reading a 4 wheel mag at the bookstore today - it had a tire comparison and I was surprised to see the ProComps rate fairly high. I can only guess that it's a bit biased perhaps due to advertising revenue's or what have you (don't trust most those mags much - waaaaay too much advertising to ever convince me they're non-biased).

Anyways, I ran a set of 37" MTR's for two or three years, some mild wheeling, a few heavy runs couple times a year, and at least 10,000 street miles - almost no noticeable rock rash, tread wear or uneven wear - they were awesome tires (sold to a fellow 40 driver and they're still going strong). Damn fine tire.

I have red label crawlers, awesome - but can't drive em on the street. I've had 38.5 TSL/SX's - awesome, but not as good an all around tire, 35 Boggers (terrible on the street), and BFG MT's - not a bad tire.

Bang for the buck - if the 40" MTRs are as good as my 37's were - I'd rate them a highest.

Here is the problem with Pro Comp They use over seas venders ie China (not saying China is bad) so the they can keep the cost of labor down, which in turn lets them sell a cheaper product. The are the dollar store of off-road cheaply made products that if only used on the road will hold up to everyday to moderate abuse, but for most of use four wheeling is a life style and we really use are 4x4s for what they were intended for. Some pro's have been seen running X-terrians, They have the money to buy a new set for every event, and if you look closely the tires they run have been Siped.

Ok. That being said, I'd have to say they flat out suck. Nothing agaisn't Chinese manufacturing - some of it is excellent, some of it is you get what you pay for. Except here's where I get a little ticked. I bought WE beadlocks last year at $400 each! In that price range - I expect my money to be going towards some guy in the States (don't care about your citizenship status - you work here and pay taxes here, I hope), with a bit of profit for the design team, the owner of the co. and a little bit for advertising. When I find that stuff is sent overseas with goals of reducing costs, but the owners pocket even higher profits at a loss of jobs here - then I get ticked. Add a lower quality to the equation and well....

So I don't know where MTR's are made - but at $400 or so each, I think they're still cheaper than 40" large rim size pro-comps. If that's the case, and the pro-comps suck to boot - well I say double fawk - that's just not right.

This is my blue collar take on supply side economics and our hobby. If close - leave me to my opinions. If I'm wrong - please post, PM or e-mail me with some facts so I can understand the issue better.

I never owned or seen in action a Xcomps ... but have 4 years with my MTR and are great off road tire .. actually I thought the have more on road tractiion than my actual Toyos MT .. and that it's much to say.

In mud ( that are not you scenario ) sucks .. but sucks with huge S !!! in rocks are great with apropiate pressure ..

I will say again , the Pro comp XTREAM Mud terrain, they are almost identical tread to a toyo or similar to an mtr. They where queit and had good raod maners. Mud was also great . I would buy a set in a second!

Remember the 2 sidewall punctures I got with the pro comps???? (John Bull Trail and Miller Trail) Maybe it was bad luck or bad wheeling but I never had those with the Bridgestones or the Toyos.

its all about the BFG T/A KM2 or the mickey thompson MTZ tires both good on highway and offroad.

If $$ is no object then yes KM2s, BUT I ended up riding on Nitto Mud Grapplers and they've not only kicked ass on the trails so far, but they track very nicely on the road.

I will probably go with the BFG's next though, I like that they are 14.5" wide
