rear fender cutting, more than usual.. :)
(I posted this in the normal FJ-40 section as well, Woody - just lemme know which section it's more appropriate in and I'll delete the other..)
Here's what we started with... The tires were hitting the fenders on a trail ride, so my makeshift method to fix it was to pound the hell out of it with a BFH so it wouldn't rub. ![]() ![]() so, first, draw a line where you want to end up. Then, do your cut, but make it about 1/2" INSIDE of the line... then, cut little slits up to the line you drew, like so: ![]() Then, using the widest pliers you have (I only have linesman pliers), bend the little tabs back as far as you can... ![]() Then, hammer the tabs back over on themselves.. I found that using a little arc swing instead of a stright-on blow worked very well... Eventually, you'll end up with this.. ![]() Yes, I cut the bumper down, too.. gonna angle it & cap it next time I'm at the shop... damn bumper is 5/16" box steel! The resulting pile.. ![]() 18 pounds! The bumper ends were right around 7 pounds each... Cruiser metal is THICK!! (and it was 2 layers on part of the right side!!) __________________ Rich in NC FJ - '73 FJ-40 Cruggy - LSx/4-wheel steer Rockwells/4-link/coilovers/42's Build thread --> http://forum.ih8mud.com/hardcore-corner/124040-keeping-low-rockwells-k-under-knife-again.html '01 Chevy 2500HD 8.1 Allison Lux-o-tow |

I cut mine back, and up, and tubbed them so as the 38s wouldnt hit and no bodylift required to fit them.

We lifted the front fenders up to the bonnet line as well as widening them 2" each side, along with a 98" wheelbase, and offset rims and track width of an extra 4" so the thing looking in proportion on the road, and not to attract red and blue light attention so it wouldnt be

I much prefer to make room for the tyres than lift the car to fit them.
The car never looks to way out then either, only to those who know what they are looking at. I no longer own the 40, but the new owner has cleaned it up a bit, and uses it for the odd trip. [and the bezel is the right way, when you want maximum opening for the alloy radiator, with the now bottom of the bezel cut off completely.] __________________ Darren M. Shed - do you have a pic of your rig like that one with a wheel on the barrel taken from the other side? I'd like to see what the rear looks like when stuffed in the fender.

I'd be interested in seeing that also. Trying to decide which way to make my new 38.5s fit.

SHED more pics
I have to say pretty damn nice work with the front fenders, BBC yum. Hard one to get rid of. "hood hold downs on the front" they kind of look like turn signals? at least the one way out. __________________ EMAIL ME click on my name, Send email to HI^C TONS FOR SALE <<<CLICK ME "everyone has different experiences and different opinions" My posts "greatly based on my observations and opinions" and "TO EACH HIS OWN" Sig edited to help futher eliminate those who have or get twisted panities. |

The bonnet clips were moved to the front, as no room left on the sides, once the fenders were lifted, and the outer ones are the turn signals, which are orange LED clearance lights.
If you look at the rear shackle mounts oon the chassis, you will see they have been turnned around and moved back, to fit the longer 60 series springs we fitted, and the shocks are mounted to the rear of the tube crossmember, instead of the front as well, and the arch has alot of room left for bigger tyres still. __________________ Darren M. You can sort of see from the inside how we had sheetmetal folded and we welded it in to box the fenders out bigger.

Thanks for posting the new pics. They were insightful. Maybe I could get away with holding the"arch" down a couple of inches from the body line?
