malaysian guys were running this set up at this years outback challenge, using datsun 120 y diff, as they are cheap.
PTO shaft to pinion flange, welded diff, winch drum hooked to axle on one side, so a 3.__ to 1 step up in the PTO drive. Some talk of them measured at 25kph on the winch cable, winching. __________________ Darren McRae 95 80 series 1FZ-FE with bits to come http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/207630-project-rooby-80-all-rounder-build.html |

a pierce 12500lb electric winch is pretty much hard core enough for me...slow and steady wins the race

It really depends on the race. Some challenge events are pretty much a winch race nowadays !

what rig would this go in ?
I had a brain fart while thinking about this thread the other day, I think it might be a brilliant idea but I probably won't have the time to build it before long

I think the dual case idea is the best option, as if you ran it straight off the PTO i could see that making for some really hairy extractions if you were ever in a tippy or technical spot.

So I think I have a way to clutch it. Use an open diff and put a disk brake from something small on the non spool side. Then you engage the winch and all the power would run through the disc brake side and not pull any on the line. The power you send to the winch would be directly related to how much braking you do. Seems like a good way to control it and could be done on a low budget. Something like an e-brake with the cable run to a lever would work. I'm thinking this is only a comp type thing.

Yeah, you let off the lever and bad things happen.Maybe a ratchet type style hookup for it.

lots of old cruisers have a mechanical winch connected to the engine... maybe you could use one of those
Many 40'2 and 60's have that .... it will lift you car straight off the ground .. or break the safety-pin __________________ HJ60..OSLO

with a 33:1 (-ish) ratio in the worm gear drive the line speed will be somewhat limited for comps.

A 4:1 winch is the easy part. The hard part is the PTO. There's no way they'd be using any factory gear with anything as heavy as a Land Cruiser.
I'm running a huge hydraulic pump off my PTO and that runs my 8000 lb Superwinch. Its about 2/3 as fast as an 8274 unloaded and about 10 times as fast at full load. __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

what about mounting it on the front axle for a comp only vehicle. This way you could just put a chain drive off the front flange to the flange on the winch for power and use a clutch to engage the winch. I don't like the idea of a winch on the axle, but you would have full driveline power right there.
