I'm only planning for 35/10.5R16 Simex Centipedes with maybe the option of upgrading to 37s in the future. Altough the 37s will probably only come when I win lotto and fit portal axles to the rig as well. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

your worried about running GQ/cruiser stuff because of weight, then you think about portals... hmmm...
if it's a winch challenge/ outback challenge type truck, portals won't help much. __________________ What can you do when you wake up and realise you sacrificed everything you ever wanted in life for the sake of progress? |

I haven't really decided what style of comps I want to build this up for. I'm more into rock crawling than speed events. Even though Short Course and Tough Tracks would be cheaper initially (no winch to buy) these events don't really appeal to me personally. Winch Challenges I don't mind because of the wheelspin rule, a little bit more controlled. Being a full bodied rig and not having 37s it wouldn't be competitive for rock crawling. Maybe one day in the future it might be developed enough as a rig to step up to rock crawling but at the moment I'm leaning more towards a winch challenge rig. Who knows if I decide I like the Winch Challenges better than rock crawling I'll focus my efforts more to stepping up to the Outback Challenge level. The OBC appeals to me on a different level to the crawling but I think it would take more commitment from the team to be competitive at the OBC. In the same way as the OBC appeals to me the Malayasian Rainforest Challenge does too. But thats a whole other ball game to compete in the MRC or the OBC.

yeah i understand your predicament. i like different comps for different reasons.
the XRCC or whatever it's called in QLD is a good rock event for fullbodied rigs i've been told __________________ What can you do when you wake up and realise you sacrificed everything you ever wanted in life for the sake of progress? |

The idea in the back of my mind to rock crawl it is the main reason for wanting to keep the rig light. BeeBees Hilux is the type of rig I want to "imitate", an all-rounder that is great at every type of event. http://www.teamdgr.com/ __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

Here ya go Mick. Some Piglet porn I snapped weekend before last outside TJM on Beaudesert Rd. Just to keep you moving in the right direction!:
Oh yeah, been driving my mates '83 landy ute this week cos the work van is having surgury (so is my wallet!) and I can tell you the only good thing about that truck is the V8! It's the one with the twin carbs like you have. Be even better in your lightweight Diahatsu! Lup

Yeah I saw that in the Magazine in the article about the Superior All Terrain Challenge. The Apprentice at work navvies for his brother in the comps and he did the All Terrain last year. It is a real car killer event.

Quick update.
I removed the original DG diesel motor. The buyer of the motor came and picked it up on Sunday. I started stripping the cab down so it will fit in the shed once I can clean enough of a space for it. I'm also putting up a 3m x 3m garden shed to try and solve my space problems. I removed the mirrors, bullbar, exhaust, grill, radiator and radiator support. Hopefully I'll have the shed erected in the next couple of weeks and I'll be able to get stuck into the project for real. At the moment I'm still looking for cheap Hilux axles and Land Rover T/case. I'll try to keep you all updated as the project progresses. I'll take a few more pics when the shed is a bit tidier and you can see more than just ****. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

I actually noticed there is a Land Rover wreckers in Hervey Bay when we were up there whale watching a few weeks back but I'm sure you already know that!
I'll be heading up that way in the next couple of weeks to give the new Troopy a run on Fraser. My mate with the Rangie wants to tow his POS caravan, (which is actually really cool because it cost him $500!), up the bay side to Wooralie Ck from the barge at moon point. Some real soft spots on that stretch of beach so we'll need the two cars and snatch-em for sure! Will be fun getting it across Kooringal Ck (sp?) too!! Lup

There is actually about three Land Rover wreckers in Hervey Bay. But they charge like a wounded bull as there is a huge demand for the stuff in Hervey Bay to maintain all the hire vehicles. Getting hold of a T/case isn't a drama it's getting one without remortaging the house is the hard bit. Have fun on Fraser Is when you come up. I have only driven from Woralie Ck to Wathumba Ck along the western beach before but not south of Woralie Ck. It is a top run along the western beach. You are right about the soft spots, it's full of them. Watch out for the darker patches of sand, they usually hide rotting seaweed, very soft. I never recommend anybody towing anything on Fraser Is. I've pulled out and repaired too many stranded vehicles from there over the years. Many people do tow over there but I don't recommend it. Was it Coongul Ck you were thinking of? It is usually the deepest of the creek crossings on the western beach. I've never driven across it(the hire vehicles aren't allowed on the western side) but it can be an adventure at times. The last time I was up that way fishing in the boss' boat (about two months ago) Coongul Ck looked pretty shallow but it can change quickly. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

Yes Coongul is the one. i knew I got it wrong but I have always said it Kooringal! We were talking to some locals when we were last up there and just about needed a translator because we'd been pronouncing things differently for years without hearing how they are supposed to sound!
If you source any cheaper parts from down Brisbane way and would like me to bring them up just shoot me a PM. I'd be only too happy do it no trouble. There's a whole lot of room in the new truck! Lup

Thanks for the offer Lup
![]() I bought the latest OBC DVD earlier this week and have been watching it intently trying to scrutinise all the DNFs and winch sections to see if I can work out what has caused the problems. Hopefully this will help me not to make the same mistakes with vehicle set up. My observations so far have reinforced my thoughts that lightweight is the way to go. The speed of the stages this year seem to be higher and the vehicles seem to be getting a lot more air. If the rig is lighter the suspension won't have to cop as much of a hiding on the landings to the jumps. The winch stages seem to be harder too. My theory is the for the same size winch the lighter vehicle won't stress the winch as much. To build the vehicle to be competitive certain items have to be used that I can't lighten but some things I can. Tyres and rims I can't but the actual base vehicle I can. This was one of the reasons behind my wanting to use the Daihatsu. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |
