I'm messing with the OME suspension on my '75 40 project today and the rear bottom shock bolts (the shock pins on the u-bolt plates) seem to be just a hair too big for the M12X1.25 castellated nuts that fit all the others perfectly. My u-bolt plates are off another vehicle so I have no idea what year fits what. These could be homebrew for all I know. Those washers barely fit up in there.

Any of you hardware gurus have an idea what to try next?

I'm fixin' to order some new plates and be done with it.....

do you have a local leaf spring shop? take one u-bolt there and let them see, its prolly not metric, they should have nuts to fit, ACE should be able to fix you up as well, my local ACE stores have great hardware.

M13x1.25 nut- Is there such a thing?

No. There nothing between M12 and M14.

Try 1/2 x 20 UNF. The 20 threads per inch relates to a pitch of 1.27 in metric.

Those spring plates in the tiny picture definitely are not OEM. probably some amurikan sized bolt for the shock.
Like Marbles said, if it's about 13mm, then it could be 1/2" (12.7mm)

The only place on a Cruiser I've seen M13 is the headbolts. Shock bolts/nuts are usually 10x1.25

Hmmmm that's odd... These guys seem to have a M13 x 1.25 tap...? :grinpimp:

Recoil Thread Kit Metric Extra Fine - Lawson HIS - UK

It's a "Helicoil type" thread repair tap isn't it Coolerman? Then perhaps that tap is used to put in a "Helicoil" that will give a STANDARD smaller thread size like 10mm?

I know "Metric threads" are foreign to the USA - but in most other countries in the world - including New Zealand - they are in everyday use.

In fact, here...... anything-other-than-metric-threads are awkward to find in your local hardware store.

And 13mm is NOT part of the standard thread-size lineup here. And I'm picking that it wouldn't be in Japan either.

Really, care to take a guess what your head bolts are.

Ha ha.. Got ya there Bsevans ------ Mine are M12 x 1.25 for my BJ40.

But...........Notwithstanding - I decided to check the EPC for an FJ40 - and sure enough .... You're right :crybaby:---- they list headbolts for those (and some other cruisers) as M13 x 1.25 (with other pitches too like 1.5 and 1.75 in M13 sizing.)

Now ----- :hmm:

Let's say "We're all correct here".

I standby my statement that it is a non-standard metric thread sizing - (just like I guess 11/32" would be in your "Imperial System").

And head bolts don't have "nuts" and are purchased from a Toyota Dealer rather than from a hardware store. So like any such specialist part - the manufacturers are more free to deviate from "standard practice in fastener design/selection".

But getting back to the Alex's question - I bet he's got an imperial thread and not an "unusual M13 metric thread" for his shock pins. (A reputable manufacturer would be pushed to justify using a "scarce non-standard sizing like 13mm" for that application.)

I:cheers:

The only point I was making was that, unlike your statement that there was nothing between M12 and M14 there in fact is hardware used in M13 x .05, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 pitch. Taps for all of these pitches in M13 are off the shelf at most industrial supply houses (MSCDirect.com for one). Siunce there is .012" difference in diameters between M13 and 1/2" bolts, I would imagine that it is not metric but SAE. Looking at the mounting plates, I would venture a guess that they are aftermarket or home made and use a 1/2" bolt welded in. They certainly are not Toyota factory u-bolt plates which tend to be formed through stamping and not made of multiple pieces welded together.

Since I installed u-bolt flip kits front and rear I have four heavy duty u-bolt skids made from 1/4" steel if you are interested. The rears have the stud for the shock. the nuts and u-bolts are fully protected. PM me if you are interested.

:hmm::hmm: Methinks you are reluctant to concede anything here Bsevans.

You have not proven the availability of any M13 nuts (in any pitch specification at all).

And if you actually tried to purchase an M13 tap from your nearest "industrial supply house" - I think you would find it would have to be on "special order". (Seeing it listed is quite different from having it "readily available.)

I searched high and low for M13 x 1.25 tap around town, and noone had even heard of one or could get me one. Although I know they exist, and expensive, I decided to skip the tapping and cleaned well by other means.

Dude, these taps - all of them - are off the shelf. That would be in stock and ready to ship. And I did not say your "nearest" industrial supply house. I purchase most of my hardware and tools from either McMaster-Carr or MSC Industrial Supply

M13 Taps

I will conceed that getting M13 hardware is in most cases either special order or like headbolts for an FJ40 purchased through the dealership. The company to call to determine the avalability of M13 hardware is Maryland Metrics

The bolt in question is not an M13 bolt. It is a 1/2" bolt. So lets just agree to disagree.

Maryland Metrics my fave

MMC was the only place in the country that had the 13mm x 1.25 rethreading tap & die I needed to clean up my block & headbolts. I think I called everyplace on-line. Some places wanted to make them for me, for about $300 each - thanks, but no thanks. MMC was about $60 total. I recently bought 14mm x 1.5 socket set screws for the air injection ports, a whole $1.20 each, as opposed to Toyota, where they were $11 something, or SOR for $7 something. When all else failed, they had what I needed, & their customer service was very good - human beings actually talk to you!

dangit dangit dangit..... verify before you buy.

shock nuts are M11 x 1.25 for the front
and M12 x 1.25 for rear, upper mount
and M12 x 1.5 for rear, lower

from coolermans nuts n bolts spreadsheet (the place to start) oy!

You know, I need to update that first entry, the front shock tower stud was replaced with a dual version and is aftermarket. :frown: They were part of a dual front shock setup the PO bought from Man-a-Fre.
