Factory Roof Rack - Tire Carrier (+ shovel/axe) (1 Viewer)

Has anyone made or know of a good tire carrier that will work securely with a factory roof rack? I actually want to get an ARB roof rack (or open to suggestions to another quality roof rack) and a Yankee custom rear bumper (I love this bumper) both of which will have a tire mounted to it (must have overkill). But for now or at least until the aftermarket roof rack I would like to make some use of the factory roof rack. Oh and while I’m at it is there a good secure shovel and axe carrier for the factory roof rack? I know Slee (who also makes an excellent rear bumper) has a Hi-Lift jack mount for the factory roof rack.

The one guy I know that carried his spare up there took it off. Too much weight up too high.

 The factory roof rack is only good for "100 lbs, evenly distributed".... It's really only good for causing rust under the feet. (Yes, it's true, mister OEM is BASHING a factory part)
 
I took mine off and threw the rotten S.O.B. in the dumpster. And got my roof re-finished(that's why I don't want to stand on it, Hugh).

 Get or make(like Photoman) a decent gutter mount rack that can take the loads and a beating. I saw my first ARB in person A short time ago and it was Very nice. I have a Garvin that I turned into a half length, It works pretty good.

 Do yourself a favor and toss that rust breeder in the dust bin.

Repainted,

  6M1 Emerald Green, About  $1400.00 to do it right, including blending into adjacent panels.  I did not drop the headliner and weld up the holes. I used stainless rosette washers and stainless countersunk screws. It came out OK

Until I figure out exactly what I want/need in a roof rack, I've got my shovel and high lift strapped down in the back of the rig. It's relatively out of the way and still easy to get at.

Christo has a mount for a high lift on the factory roof rack though, so check out: www.sleeoffroad.com in the products section.

O' is that what is going on?

Looking at roof racks, my last 60 had a basket made from 1" square tubing on Yakima feet and crossbars. Since I keep my roof loads light, kayaks, bikes, some lumber, tents, stokes, etc. I really liked that setup. I may go that way on the 80. Generally, I think it's a good idea to keep the roof loads light, but if you have to throw mucho weight up there, something like the ARB rack or Photoman's is the way to go.

I've heard talk about the ARB rack with the mesh floor being very heavy, so you might want to look into the rack without the floor at first, and then add your own at a later date if you find you need a full floor.

You are right about the ARB. The one I mentioned is on the roof of my bud's V8 60. Me and 2 other guys helped him lift it up on the roof. Shipping weight on the freight bill was 110 lbs............Full length rack though.

from all i've read, it is supposed to be "better" (opinion) than the ARB. &nbsprawback though seems to be the price.

I think Junk is running a Hannibal rack, which, as I recall, he has had some "rattling" issues with, forcing modifications...

The "Tradesman" racks man-a-fre sells look pretty good, and not too pricey, but I don't know anyone who has used them.

I still love mine 3/4" tubing and some expanded steel. works great and I dont care if it gets scratched.

And I made a mistake on the Yankee name it turns out Mike's web host is Yankee Toys. Mike is a really nice guy that custom builds things for his cruiser and sometimes builds stuff for others in his club in New Haven, CT. Here is a link to what his rear bumper looks like.

Yes they are nylon ,true value hardware 1.50 each 3/8x16 or they have them in 1/4 20
