My Super 40 Build

I aquired a '78 frame & tub many years ago for free & it's been stored away, scattered throughout my basement. I finally got around to piecing it back together. I've also been gathering drivetrain parts over the years. I have all the body parts & most of the drivetrain, but the engine. I sold the 2F I was going to use a while back, so I'm lookin for another.

This will be my drivetrain setup so far:
SM420 tranny w/ Dana 300 & Tera Low 4:1
Dana 60 front w/ ARB 7.17's
offset 35 spline Dana 60 w/ spool 7.17's

Wheels & tires:
H1 double beadlocks recentered w/ Stazworks centers & CJ66Dean rock rings
Don't have the tires yet, but I'm planning on either 42" SX's or 42" Iroc stickies

Engine & accessories:
2F (don't have yet)
Fuel Injection from a Spaceghost adaptor to use a setup from a Chebby S-10
Premier Power Welder
Warn M12K winch

Body mods:
I will use all the stock sheetmetal from the cowl forward, the door sills & stock half doors (modified)
I extended the frame 18" in order to form the base mount for a cage (similar to a dbl. rollbar - more on this later)
The rear section behind the rollcage will be tubed out & I'll use a double gas can carrier already fabbed for the tailgate.
No front bumper plans yet as the P.O. cut off the front frame horns @ the crossmember
I'll run Fiero seats
Stock gas tank
I'm planning on using perforated metal for the floor & tranny hump since I cut out the old rusted floor.

Suspension:
TJ 8" lift coils front & rear w/ stock TJ coil retainers
I want to go triangulated 4 link front & rear. Not really sure I can keep it low, skirting the front links around the oilpan, so that may change.
I have a little bit of link tubing but no joints
Steering will be full hydro

That's about all I can think of right now. So far, I've started on the frame, wheels & half doors. The doors bottoms will extend inward & have storage, similar to the one's I built for the . I'll continue fabbing smaller stuff till I get a garage bay available. Stay tuned.......

Might make the annual, not sure yet. I fogot to add that I won't be spending much $$$ at all on this till I finish up the other two. I'll just be using my time & materials I already have. I think the cage & back half design will set it apart from any other 40. I'll get the body & tubework done 1st as that'll be the most time consuming part.

Already the 5th post & I thought it'd come sooner than that. The is about ready to get rewired, so I gotta save up for the harness + someone else's install rate. The other 40 is waiting on Staun$$$, so I gotta have something to work on during the weekdays

We have a rebuilt Multi-Port, 4-bolt 350 at the shop that would pe perfect for that project. Disreguard the Lexus badge, we were going to put it in an LX450.

$1000 for the engine w/ all new internals and heads
$1000 for the complete EFI setup. ECU, Harness, Dizzy, New Fuel Pump etc.

Although tempting on the 350, I'd like to keep something in the drivetrain Land Cruzah I'm going to look at a 2F long block in 2 weeks for cheap. The goal right now is to spend as little ca$h as possible while I save up for funds to finish the other two ongoing projects. Thanks anyway, it sounds like a good deal

Half Doors/ Door Strikers

I added the extended part of the storage area to the base of the doors. Should be about a 4" deep storage bin. I'm using 1/8" mat'l. to give these a little strength. Also, I had to refab the upper door strikers to accept the older doors. I capped the tops too.

I finished the bottom areas. I decided to just leave it mostly open. All that's left is to box in the remaining sides & top sections. Both tops of the doors were bent, like someone stepped on 'em So, I've been trying to straighten that area & also keep the doors aligned.

I had some warping at the bottom so I had to cut the bases & the outside panel & use a BFH to correct the alignment. After I somewhat straightened them out, I added the top pieces. Next pics, I'll have the upper panels burnt in & all cleaned up ready for paint. I'm thinking white tub & doors, hammered grey for the cage & all tubing & black underbody.

I finshed these up A lot of finish grinding was done, now I'll sand 'em down & paint later. I've already started some tub repair. It was rusted down at the bottom of each floorboard at the body mount areas. This should keep me busy for a little bit patching & replacing sheetmetal.

Update

I definitely need an auto-darkening lens working w/ this sheetmetal. The dash is patched up & I've got about all the holes done on the rest of the tub, now I gotta tackle the bottom corners where it's pretty bad eaten up. I also patched the factory holes in the base of the door sills. I fitted up the tranny hump too. It's in pretty good shape but I won't cut any till I get the drivetrain in & figure out where the shifters come up. Pics later.......

Chuck,
FYI I picked up my auto helmet at Harbor Freight a couple of years back. It was on sale and has worked great for me.

I finally finished up patching the tub I used 16 guage cuz I rarely blow thru that. I also completed the door sills & tranny hump. I did find out I had to patch a few holes when I removed the factory thermal barrier glued to the top. I had to fab up the base for one of the tranny hump attachment bolts too.

Nothing pic worthy yet as I'm working on cutting & repairing fenders & the hood. I'm thinking about cutting the front frame, in front of the motor, in order to keep my ride height low & have some suspension uptravel. I'd flip that cut section 180 deg. to have it raise up & reweld. I don't think I can keep it low w/a triangulated 4 link front, so I'll run a panhard bar.

Wheel Centers

After some thought about welding the centers in the H1 wheels, I decided to bypass the Staz centers. I felt there wasn't enough material on the edges to weld to the wheels. I did think about welding small wedges perpendicular to the centers for more weld contact, but that's too much work. Sooo, I had these other centers laying around & they just needed some lightening & final lug hole reaming. I designed a simple pattern that'd be easy to clean up w/ a grinder.

I plasma'd these 3/8" plates out & finished smoothing the edges. I'll burn these in w/ a 3.5" backspacing. I still hafta get a lug hole reamer bit & machine all holes.

Burnt these centers in already & now I'm ready to weld in the rock rings. I still need to finish up grinding down the ridges on the mag runflats & these wheels will be ready for paint. I'll get to the painting later when I nail down a color scheme.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, I saw a few pics of that one. Can't wait to see more pics, especially of the portal axles. How about a build thread for your new FJ40????

Onto my update:
In order to keep the ride ht. low, I needed to cut & reform the frame higher for upward axle travel. I burnt in 1/4" wall 2 X 2's for the extensions. I may plate the outside of the frame @ the connection. I'll use the old panhard mount I cut off the other 40. Next, I'll connect the frame back together w/ the same tubing & add braces. This should be plenty stout to handle a 12K winch & the rest of the front assembly.

Minor update:
First, the frame was totally welded up. Then, I was going to burn in the front crossmember so I got the tub on the frame, aligned everything level & noticed the tub kicked one side of the frame forward I took all my measurements from the stock crossmember before I cut it off & verified measurements from my '73. I'll reassemble & try aligning everything again when I have permanent garage space dedicated to this build.

I wasn't totally finished modding the cowl & door sills. So, I clearanced both for some tubing I have planned in that area. Those bottom corners of the cowl were in sad shape anyway. On the inner door sills, I left a lip so I can weld in my flooring later on. The small piece of tube is just a prop.
