its not about sliding, its one piece. its just a tight fit, needs to be squeezed and inserted, just gonna be a slower more delicate touch than the body moulding.

I used a flat piece of plastic shaped like a screwdriver to push it into the channel , worked great, and very slow though.

That's a mighty fine subsitute there with an amazingly perfect fit when installed right.

The 4' outer piece for the tailgate (the one w/the wiper) works great for the outer part on the doors instead of the felt. It looks factory and seals better, 'cause its got the wiper part and the little chrome strip adds some bling. You'll need 2 more 4'ers.

The tailgate outer weatherstripping that goes across the top of the tailgate and down the sides IS available from John in Cambria, CA. I just got that piece from him 2 months ago and it fits perfectly and is a copy of the OEM!

I've been collecting weather stripping, most of which I found here on this thread. So far I have the upper tailgate rubber and cargo window rubber from PVCruisers, and they are dead on stock.

Some of the JC Whitney stuff I have is really good, some not as much. So I decided to take some photos and post up the differences.

Door seals (on the actual door in the channel)

Driver/ JC Whitney/ $17/ ZX813688A/ 10 ft
Passenger/ JC Whitney/ $17/ ZX813689B/ 10 ft
Left Rear/ JC Whitney/ $17/ ZX813688A/ 10 ft
Right Rear/ JC Whitney/ $17/ ZX813689B/ 10 ft

And here is the comparison to stock. The new pieces are continuous, so I couldn't take a picture of the cross section, so I drew it in and it's approximate. The big thing here is that it is fatter than stock.

The Bailey channel...the felty channel the windows ride in. Here is the comparison. Note the stock channel curls in quite a bit more. The bent in edges are actually what the glass touches, on the J.C. Whitney the glass rides on the inside.

Driver / JC Whitney/ $9/ ZX184879T/ 8 ft
Passenger/ JC Whitney/ $9/ ZX184879T/ 8 ft
Left Rear/ JC Whitney/ $9/ ZX184879T/ 8 ft
Right Rear/ JC Whitney/ $9/ ZX184879T/ 8 ft

Tailgate outer window channel. This is significantly different since it doesn't have the curve on the ends to seal up the bend into the side of the tailgate.

Tailgate Outer/ JC Whitney/ $17/ ZX819752R/ 4 ft

Window felt (all four doors and the inner tailgate). This is virtually the same, but you will need to drill the attachment holes and order the little clips HeathFJ mentioned in his post

"I used the old felt as a guide and drilled holes in the new window felt to match the holes in the door. To attach the felt to the door, order part #11411 from Restoration Specialties (it is on page 101 of their catalog) http://www.restorationspecialties.com/catalog.htm"

Here are some pics:

As I collect more , I'll post up. I plan on buying the door rubbers from rarespares for sure. I'll probably also go with slocruisers outer tail gate seal.

I just checked my door window felt. that I got from rare spares. It is exactly like JCWhitney. Thats not promissing.

I wonder if we can get them to take a pic of the cross section of the door rubber. It would suck if what the offered is the same as what JC whitney offered.

I was going to get some stuff from rare spares too, but I decided to save some money and see if the JC Whitney stuff would work good.

The only thing I am concered about with the JC Whitney door rubbers are that they are too fat for the doors to close well.

I also bought some stuff from SOR, I am going to compare and hopefully put together a combo that works well.

Heather - Good detective work...

I don't have my 55 any more, but as I remember, the seal that goes on the door worked exceedingly well - eventhough it is more round in profile than the original. I think it was listed as a replacement for 1970's toyota pickups.

The one that caused the most problems for me was the door weatherstrip that mounts on the body. The piece from JC Whitney was definately thicker and made the door hard to close if it was not adjusted "just right". That would be the piece I would try to find something else for....FWIW.

Glad to see that this list is being continually refined.

I love cruiser parts in the kitchen...

Thanks for all the problem solving you guys are doing and the up close pics of what all this rubber actually looks like with the difference between stock and aftermkt. I am anticipating the day when I start the restoration of my PIG. This will be so much help.

May the PIGS live on...!!

I have heard the weatherstrip that mounts on the body, makes it hard to close the doors and also cracks the window frame. I bought the JC Whitney stuff as well as the stuff from SOR.

If the same problem exists with both kinds.................I may try another solution. McMaster-Carr sells neaoprene rubber cord by the foot. Perhaps glueing a smaller diameter piece onto the u-channel that mounts to the body.

nat, can you post up pics of the difference between JCWhitney and SOR? I think that it's just that the JCWhitney is too fat. Then you get too fat around the door with too fat around the frame = too fat all around.

I am wondering (and will check) to see if the the JCW stuff is hollow or closed cell. If it's hollow, I wonder if you couldn't collapse it to allow for more space? Or, if finding closer to stock for around the door might solve the problem. I think it's the combo that causes the issue.

I haven't heard back from rarespares with some answers to questions I sent them. As soon as I do, I'll let you know what they say and if I order.

i have had the same results on the door wetherstrip that mounts to the body, in my case i could only get one door to close all the way, two would only catch the first latch after some serious pushing and one would not latch at all. i realize there is some adjustment to the doors but the three are just too far off to adjust. i have a good couple inches of the stock weatherstrip that i take whenever i got to the junkyards fr comparison, the older saab looks pretty good and a volvo looked like a real good candidate. i'll report back if/when i try these on the actuall 55 door.
