East Coast Pig Run/SOA piggy
Jeff Dozier mentions the last Saturday in August for the EX pig run- I'm OK with that would prefer the Saturday before, though- August 19. I'll be there either day no matter what just showing my preference.
My SOA is coming along fine. FJ62 axles secured under the springs, one weak elaf removed from each spring pack replaced with two leaves from the donor FJ62. Knuckles cut and turned tilt set at 4 degrees. Front driveshaft done rear had to be lengthened and is in the lathe ready to be welded. Shock mounts in place rear shocks ordered from Superlift the fronts I wanted are out off stock. Using Luke porter's high lift parts and they are beefy and the tie rod end ought never to be a problem. The 62 steering box is bolted in place and the mounting plate tacked ready to be finish welded. Steering colum needs to be lengthened we're gonna use a long FJ62 shaft and shorten it, using FJ55 u joint at the top end.
The truck is tall doesn't look like it's gonna be able to get into my garage. The 35 x 12.50 mud terrains look good on it and mounted on 8" wheels they don't stick out much beyond the fenders (good deal). Working under the hood will be fun- will have to stand on the front bumper!!!
The Aussie four speed now has a three speed transfer case mounted on it, I had to make a spacer for over the tranny output shaft to ensure correct alignment of the transfer case input gear. All looks good I am hopeful I can make a transfer shifter from a four speed setup work. Stay tuned. For the time being I am gonna keep the original transmission/transfer in the truck at least till I get it home.
Decided to go with a different pitman arm. The 62 pitman has a deep drop in it and I opted to eget a straight arm from Luke Porter. It'll keep the steering arm (from steering box to pass side knuckle) from hitting the top of the spring at full compression of the spring.
If all goes well the truck will be finished up by next weekend. anxious to get bher home and see how it works in the rocks. Stay tuned!!!! Shmukster

8/19 is fine with me also Gary, it makes no matter to me! It should be a really cool year for pig runs!
I got the pig out of the garage today. Thanks to Gary for a used 3rd and a purchase of an aussie locker, the rear is ready to go.
Can't wait to see your 62 axled SOA piggie!

Hopefully I'll be able to make it this year. 55 ran good at the BBRC event up in Paragon earlier this year. I'm hoping to finish the front clip (tube fenders and sheet metal work) before GSMTR. If it survives that and CMCC then I should be good to go for ECPR!

That pig is awesome Lance... Gary S. should have his SOA 55 back soo and with Brian's, that makes 4 SOA pigs and then add Joe M's two and we're already at 6 for the ECPR. I know Chuck is also going to try and make it so then we're at 7.. a few other pigs that came last year like Tom H. and Will (from CT) would put us in good standing in terms of numbers!

I'd like to bring mine up for the ECPR but I definitely want to go to Swine o Rama so if its the same week I'll be heading west. I still plan on being at the SoR whether I'm in the pig or another rig.

I was also planning to go out to the SoR but since I live on the East Coast the ECPR sounds like a blast..... Maybe we could have them on different dates?
Ryan.

8/19/06 for the ECPR? Wow, same time as EC4RJ at Paragon!
Talk about options!
See you at ECPR.

How does it handle on the street w/ the soa. Or better yet does anyone use there pig as a daily driver and have a soa? I love the way it looks but at what cost.
New pig owner long time 75' 40 owner.
thanks
Michael

SOA rides fine down the road.. really the tires you choose dictate the comfort of the ride.. i.e. my SS SX with 15000 road miles pluse two years of wheeling made for an interesting ride (unrelated to the suspension) and the 33's I use to get to the trails ride like a cadillac : )
A properly set up SO is equally as safe and effective as SUA but offers more flex and .. oh, and more flex (dependent on variables and as a general comparison), and clearance of the axles, etc.
There are lots of posts on how to SO and estimated costs.. search the 40/55 forum and others....a good option is to determine the list of parts and tasks and break it down. You should do cross over steering at the same time to make it an overall improvement.
There are pics of my process here

My truck runs great on the road. At an indicated 58 MPH I guess I'm going close to 70MPH with 35" tires. I went with BFG mud terrains and they balanced perfectly- no vibration at any speed I can reach!!!! Handling is great- not as top heavy as I had feared and I believe a lot of reason for that is my using the wider than stock (by 3 inches) FJ62 axles front and back. The FJ62 power steering setup done ala Mark Whatley works great and the high steer components from Luke Porter are fine, too. I have absolutely no regrets about my spring over and would do it again in a minute. As long as the person doing the work is competent, patient and careful it's a big improvement in all ways (except for ease of getting in the truck!!!!). Gary S
