Seats
I am thinking about losing the bench for some buckets. Not because I like buckets better or want them I love the bench its cool, but I want to get my seat a little closer to the pedals also want to keep the gf happy and I wouldnt mind being able to adjust them some and maybe raise the seat a bit too. So anyway I was just wondering who has switched their front seat to buckets or a different bench maybe, and how has it worked out, pics?

Man, I'd say most have gone to buckets. I still have my bench, had it reupholstered a couple years back, but it's already wearing thin. My wife loves the bench (go figure), but I'm gonna go ahead with buckets. I'ts just finding the right ones for the right price. You know what would be a cool addition to this thread, is if everyone with buckets posted a pic of what theirs look like, and what they're out of, what they paid ect..

This is what I am thinking of doing. Lance over at IronPigOffroad makes the bracket and sells the seats. The Tuffy console is an option. It's the cleanest idea I have seen yet for the pigs.

Well, I don't have pics yet, but I picked up a pair of Mitsubishi Eclipse buckets last year (yep, a year ago) for $5 apiece from a Pic-n-Pull. They're actually in decent shape. They recline, have equal-height floor mounts (many cars I looked at didn't), and I think the driver side has adjustable lumbar support as well. I really like them. I'll like them even more when they are mounted in a running, braking, steering pig. Hopefully I'll finish up this winter break. Should probably do a little pig build thread....

Tyler thats kind of what I was thinking theres a pick and pull nearby I am planning on checking out this week. I want to find some buckets out of something like that maybe some kind of honda comfy and easy to mess with I have been doing enough lately that I dont want to do any serious fabricating for these seats.

Lots of options for seats... I went with BMW: "iron-age" fabbed my brackets, fit in a console. Works well, not the prettiest install I've seen, but I tend to do things two or three times before I get it right...
I've seen Subaru, Honda, Celica, minivan seats... sky's the limit.
The bolt-in option is always easiest, though not the cheapest. But if you only have to do it once...

That's why you need two pigs...
Trail pig gets buckets and the stocker keeps the bench.

Actually, I really love the bench in my pickup and my pig. Mostly because it gives the dog a good place to lay down on road trips. However, getting tossed around by rocks and bumps isn't that great of a time. It'll be nice to have a lockable center console (which will probably be an ammo can from Sportsman's Guide, Coleman's, or one of them ) where I can put extra junk that otherwise spends its time sliding around the seat or floor. I was thinking I'd pad it to make it dog-acceptable.
I've seen a lot of people with Volvo, BMW, Saab, and other cool seats, but I've never seen them in the local Pic-n-Pull in decent shape. They're ALWAYS shredded. Maybe you have to buy them from a they-pull-it yard? My cheapies will more than do the job now, though, and met all my requirements for seats. Heat would be nice for my creaky young joints so I've considered this stuff:
http://www.gorix.com/product%20overview.htm
I used this to make a heated motorcycle vest for my KLR. Pretty cool stuff. Maybe sew it into a seat cover and I'll always have heated seats!
Another somewhat local Cruiserhead pulled a set of Chevy Astrovan buckets for his pig. They were super comfy and fully electrically adjustable. They have "legs", so I think he might have been able to mount them without brackets (maybe had to drill some holes). My seats are a little firmer.

I've been thinking about Volvo seats like my 40. They are flat bottomed, multi manual adjustable, leather, heated and comfy.
Minivan seats are another option. They have pedastals and armrests.
I like the looks of the bench. My wife wouldn't ride hillbilly, so that's not a consideration. It's just damn uncomfortable on long rides and not real secure feeling when you're at high pucker angles.

late model saturn, all kinds of different adjustment. made the frame that the seats and centre box are attached to and the whole thing bolts into the stock seat holes.

Cool I found a good place today that has about 100-200 small and midsize cars around. I'll probably yank something from a taurus or saturn or something of that nature.

Tauruses have split benches, but you could grap the cooling fan and power distribution center.

Most cars today run a power distribution center with all the maxi type fuses in them. The Taurus and Sable have a very nice one without any relays or mini fuses muddling up the works, just 8 or 10 maxis. It's great for a high amp aux fuse box. I run one in the 80 for the lights, fusable links, amp and other stuff. Really cleans up the wiring. You run one power wire in and you get 10 fused wires out.
It has an o-ring seal lid, too.
It's mounted between the driver's side strut tower and the firewall on the Sable.

The piggy is getting one next week after a trip to the boneyard. My fuseable links didn't much like the 100A alternator.

Be careful when buying seats out of smaller cars to put in a 4wd, as some aren't made to be thrashed around out bush and before too long could give way, especially if the car has been in an accident, the seats may already be damaged.
I'm only saying this because Australian 4WD Monthly magazines bush mechanic, john rooth made that mistake, buying some seats out of a small car to put in his old troopy and after making the mounts, realised they were useless.
Dan.

Thanks Bushboy I'll be sure and check out the frame of the seats and stuff before I buy any to make sure I think they are strong enough.

yeah that is a good point. alan's trail truck seat is a LC seat but one side bracket needs to be reinforced. So we'll definatley have to look for some stout ones. We may be able to find some out of like an Isuzu trooper or a ford ranger. Those might be a litte more stout.

Where are your four points attached in the back? I've heard they have to be solid mounted close to the top of the seat or when you go forward, they will crush down on you.

Saw a bunch of tauruses today in case anbody wants the fans or power dist center thing I could pull them and ship all you would have to pay is cost. I liked the seats in the chevy cavaliers they were pretty comfy and they mount really easy all the brackets are the same length. Also saw some nice seats in an explorer I liked. Saw some out of a mercedes as well. Guy told me about $50 for both front seats out of most anything there. So I'll probably head back pretty soon and wander around again and make a final choice. On another note anybody interested in a york compressor? I know they are pretty desireable as well and we came across a few of those.

I'll try and get you pics of the brakets / mounts used in my pig. I have tercel? seats and they are the bomb.
When I pulled this arrangement from my donor pig, I did have to cut some of the stock seat perches out of my 71 pig. I do love the way she rides with buckets. Beats the hell out of the bench.

Checked out every set of bucket seats in a local wrecking yard. There were only about 3 that I would consider swapping in. The ones I like most were out of a late 80's early 90's Chrysler Le Baron. The only thing that sucked was that they were red (blargh!). This wrecking yard is pretty pathetic though. Still plannin on scouring some yards in Phoenix in a few weeks.

I have some 97 Civic buckets that I was going to use but since I put the rear heater in the seat would have to be up so high that I'd need a lump in the roof like "Harry and the Henderson's". Is everyone using a rear heater or not? I really want to keep it but the bench sucks eggs. Need ideas.
