So I've been working on this deal for a while, but I finally got my new Piggy home today :). She's a 1979 with factory PS, and oh ya a MB 617a 5-cylinder turbodiesel and soon to be H55 (sitting in a crate with a split case). I've always said if I ever got another pig it would have to be the most rust free I'd ever seen, I'll let the pics speak for themselves:

Now the fun part :)

It currently has a 4x4Labs adapter from Luke to a H42/Splitcase and is running 3:73 gears, I'll be swapping in the H55/Splitcase and 4:11 gears ...

Wow Tucker! I wondered why you parted the the 40 you built, now I see. Very nice. I think you need to figure a way to have a 40 too. Check with Sea Knight, he seems to be able to square such deals.

Now that, is a stunning 55 and a turbodiesel no less! Congratulations on that find. Patience is a virtue :)
Would be great to hear more about it - interior shots please.

I gave away my valve adjusting wrenches with the 1980 300SD I once had. I also had all the FSM's etc. Good motor, has a double timing chain.

I wonder if the monster vacuum pump could be used to lock and unlock air lockers?

I need to see some closeups on the engine, maybe it would help me decide to do the 617 over the 3B. Congrats Tucker, she's a beauty! If you need help with the H55, let me know, I would be up for it.

Been tinkering with the new toy, I'll try to get some interior shots tomorrow. The inside is pretty ghetto fabulous, some sort of GM van buckets with the rear bench and door panels to match. The local guy who did he diesel swap and sold this to me had it detailed last week, it actually looks nice enough to live with for a while. Need a steering column cover and has a sweet wooden tray under the radio/controls (have a OEM pad to replace), but I'm digging it otherwise. It also has one of he old $OR interior roll cages, which I like for shoulder belts in the back ... gotta get he rear window working and needs lower rubber of course :(

The 15" wheels don't have hubcap clips but have new BFG 33x10.50s, looking into the VW hubcap clip mod to install stock caps. Has the old MAF Safari 4" lift springs with helpers in the back, OME 70 series shocks and beefy shackles. I'm just going to enjoy driving this for now, came with factory AC I need to figure out a compressor for before next spring.

Gonna need a 60 transmission crossmember from an '85+ 60 from you, I'll let you know on the turn signals when i install the 70-series I've got.

How is Elsie coming?

I should be picking up the rims from Baktash at EMS tomorrow, then get some rubber on her on Tuesday. Still looking into trying to bypass the rear tailgate lock sensor (havent looked at it since nuclearlemon told me what to do). I need to get the horn working then I will try to pass inspection and get it driving.

I saw your pig when spallet had it about 3-4 months. Good shell for sure. But nothing was in there, it was pretty barren. Cant wait to see the pics of the interior. Do you know any history before spallet bought it?

He bought it from a guy in NM who had it in the family for 15 yrs, they used to take it on trips down into Mexico and it has ~60 gal worth of long range tanks (2). Came with a roof rack and frame extenders for a winch too ;)

Tucker,

Question, you mentioned the VW hubcap clips, I have heard of this, but can't find out any information on them. Could you discuss this alittle or post a link.

Wish my 55 was that far along, nice!

Thanks, Ron

Ron,

I did some searching and found this:

http://www.porsche356registry.org/r...-and-repair/309-hubcap-clip-installation.html

These clips are very similar to the stock clips and are readily available on the web/eBay if you search. You can get the mandrel here:

http://www.vw-wagenwerks.com/servlet/the-8699/RIVET-TOOL--dsh--/Detail

The wheels I've got didn't come with clips so I'll have to drill holes for the rivets, should be a fairly straight forward mod otherwise;) I'll post some pics when I get around to doing this -

Hey man I will gladly offer my one steely that's got two broken clips for measuring your spacing for drilling.

BTW the truck looks great.

Thanks Tucker,

That's some good information. I going to have my wheels made and would like to put the clips on them, also.

More pics/updates!!

I'm going to have to find me a pig just hang around you cool guys. I should sell/trade my 40 for one :hmm:
