Posting the pic of the part number for the Infamous Nylon Gear (the rear window one), I was reminded of an amusing anecdote...which could be replayed at a Toyota parts counter near you.
Watcha do is, you walk into your friendly neighborhood Official Toyota Dealership, the parts counter, I know all the guys at mine, you probably do too, go to the oldest guy, ask for the rear window nylon gear. He pulls up the picture, "Unavailable" he'll say. Oh? But I heard it was still available (or something like that, you reply) No! No! No! How many times must I tell you! is what they usually say. So then you come back "Part Number 72751-39020 no longer is available??? But I was sure..."(have it memorized, or written on the palm of your hand). Insist that partguy punch in that part number...wait for the response..."Where the heck did you find that blankety-blank part number" or something similar. I just love that.
It's not shown on picture that they use, but it's still a current number, $20.00 last I heard. Then complain if it's not in stock.

I go to the one in Folsom, new(ish) dealership, they NEVER have anything in stock, but can almost always get it in a day or two. One guy is reasonably knowledgeable, another guy said once, "1977, I didn't know Landcruisers went back that far!"

Stealerships crack me up. I go thru it everytime with them on parts I know are still in the system. And it just isnt Toyota... the chick at the local VW dealer doesnt know squat. One time I talked till I was blue in the face when we were trying to order a diesel part.

Although my favorite Toyota story is about a salesman we encountered one time when looking at a used 80 and we had driven our FJ55 and parked right next to it. Wife and I still have a good laugh over that one.

Same thing happened to us...Wife dropped off her 80 for an oil change...I pick her up in the 55...sales guys come out..."Is that a Land Cruiser?"

Had a similar experience recently getting a side mirror for the pig. They said not in stock, but the manager got me the part number. I'm still not sure about that "oh, we have only one left in the system. Lucky You". Last week they told me I took the last drivers side mirror in the toyota system, and that there was one passenger one left.

Welllll.. We were just out for a drive in the pig... decided to pull into the automall...... noticed an 80 series on the Toyota Used lot. So we pulled in to check it out. Now the pig I was driving at the time was an 1974 and had about a 4 inch lift, 33x12.50's and 3/8" channel iron bumpers. Had a fresh coat of rattle can forrest-green and Ivory. Was lookin pretty good. We pull into the lot and park right next to the 80. You'd think the salesman would have leaped on us as soon as the doors opened but we actually got to look at the 80 before anyone showed up. When the guy did show up I was leaning against the drivers side front fender. I was between the grill saying TOYOTA and the emblem that states its a Land Cruiser. Not to mention it says in huge letters on the tailgate TOYOTA with a few TLCA stickers on the glass. The salesguy is talking like he invented the Land Cruiser. He is making a weak attempt at TLC history and every other word he states how "Rugged and TOUGH" they are , in a mannly man voice. Wife and I are just sitting back letting him talk the whole time. So he is startin to run out of steam. He is walking around the pig as he is talking about still telling us how great cruisers are, when he looks over at me and then states, "Wow what year Rover is that?". Im like "HUH?"... then he tells me its a very nice looking Land Rover and he has always wanted one and wanted to know what year it was and where we bought it. My wife is now walking away in an attempt to not embarras the guy by laughing in his face... I asked him why he thought it was a Land Rover... because it is a Land Cruiser... and he was like "What do you mean this is a Land Cruiser... "Ive never seen this kind of Land Cruiser before." and he has this puzzled look on his face with his mouth hanging open. So now I have to prove to him I am not crazy..... because thats the way he is lookin at me.... I say.."If you look at the front grill here it says TOYOTA.... as you were talking to me you kept looking at the front end so I dont understand how you couldnt see TOYOTA on the front. On my side here is clearly states this is a Toyota Land Cruiser. When you looked at the rear it is painted in big black letters on a white background TOYOTA." I then went into some history about TLC Wagons... he didnt say much and walked back to his showroom floor.

Classic. I've had three separate Toyota employees call my FJ62 a Land Rover, Jeep, or my favorite, a Highlander (this was the parts guy, who has never seen the truck, just couldn't remember what part I just asked him for 30 seconds ago.)

Called my local dealership today and my gear will be here in a week.

tried ordering today with the dealership for my rear window as well. The rep said we'll see what happens since he saw 1 in inventory and several in transit.

The dorks in Roseville can't seem to keep LC wiperblade inserts in stock. I like to wander in and harass them about it from time to time.

My local dealerships suck.


I think I'll ask for that part number next time....then tell them I don't really need it.

I don't know about you all but these days when I walk into the parts department at my local Toyota dealership all of the old guys pick up the phone and act like they're on a call.

A few years back, this same dealer had a newspaper ad with a special on air cleaners, all toyota air cleaners were priced at $5.49. What was nice about this ad was it lacked the usual fine print: LandCruisers and diesels slightly higher. So I got up there right away. Strode to the counter with the ad in ine hand and asked about the price for a '74 FJ55 air cleaner (I'm sure you know what they list for), parts guy swallowed hard and said there'd been a mistake. I sympathized with him for 1.5 seconds and pointed out that that was their problem, and today LandCruiser air filters were $5.49. He compounded the error by asking me how many I wanted. I asked him how many he had. He dug himself juat a little deeper by admitting "4".
Great! I said, "I'll take all 4". Knowing that this offer was limited to stock on hand and that I'd never get an opportunity like that again. Those parts counter guys have not had anything nice to say to me since...

Do you know if there is a tailgate motor available? I think my motor is gone the gears all look good.

See if you're getting power at the motor. There are a bunch of switches and circuit breakers and a junction strip and they all like to go bad on you. Don't go looking at the most expensive part first!!

Good advice, I have it at the tech school at Boise State body shop and they said they are testing it and can't get it to work. They have it completely pulled and bench tested it. I will check on it a little more.

An electrical shop should be able to rebuild for you. I imagine the brushes last forever given the time the motor is actually "on"

Anyone ever put in a tailgate motor that was not OEM? What would work? Anything from a four runner or other vehicle with sliding glass rear (old '77 chevy wagon has sliding glass). Anything from the Grainger catalog?

FWIW Our club sponsor got me one and they said there are about 12 left in their computers.
Funny thing, He said he had a herder time getting correct spark plug wires for our 74.
