Growling Pig

My pig decided to give me some troubles right before bird season starts. I was coming home from watching some Monday Night Football at my sis and brother in law's place. About 3 miles from home I could smell gear oil burning, I hopped out with the flashlight and looked at it looked like I lost a rear t-case seal and it was slinging it on the exhaust. It started whining a little bit more than normal, but I drove it the last bit home. I went to drive it into the shop the other night and it has a definate growl now. So I pulled the floorboard panel off and it is definately a transfer case issue by the feel of the vibration and growling. After searching I found that the idler shaft in the t-case is usally the culprit for the whining noise. I plan on pulling the t-case and opening it up to see how bad it is. My pig is a 69 with the old 3 speed in it. I've posted a while ago about a 79 pig that a farmer has sitting and I've struck a deal to buy it for 300 bumps on the head. The body is completely trashed, it has a drivers rear turn signal lens that is salvageable but that's seriously about it body wise. I'm contemplating taking the front disk axle, 4 speed and 2f out of it but have a couple of questions. 1st is that I kinda like the old 3 speed on the column, but could see that having a synched trans would be nice. As well as the more reliable 2f. Also if I used the 2f, it's my understanding that I would need a later model hood. Due to the carb and intake height is that correct? Could I use the 1f intake and carb and install on the 2f? The hood is trashed on the donor pig so that's out of the question. My pig is quite original and I kinda like it that way, I don't know which way to go here. Help me make up my mind. Also where'd the best place to source t-case parts I may need if I decide to rebuild the 3 speed t-case. Thanks in advance my friends.

You would need to use the complete manifold assembly from the F, and also use step-down studs, or, grind/drill/open up the fastener relieves in the intake and exhaust manifolds larger to accept the 12mm bolts/studs that are used on the 2F, vs. the 10mm manifold hardware found on the F.

While you have the manifold off, make sure to verify that the mating surfaces to the cylinder head for the intake and exhaust are true, so that you prevent that sealing headache from occurring when you put things back together. If it needs to be resurfaced/trued up, be sure to do that.

Give Curt a holler at Cruiser Outfitters; he should have what you need.

Holy Smokes, I went to snatch the t-case out of the pig and was amazed at what I found. What appears to be the idler shaft has mysteriously vanished from my t-case. The cover that bolts on it has broken off and the idler shaft must have took a vacation with it. Also there isn't a drop of gear oil in it and it looks as though the transmission is wet with oil? I didn't yet pull the fill plug to see if it's overfull. I just checked the t-case level the last time I serviced it, I don't get it. The shaft cover is almost even with the t-case fill plug so I don't think I would have lost all the oil out of it but who knows? Guess I'll start my search for a new idler shaft and rebuild kit for the t-case. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, I have heard of that happening. Once before. The idler shaft distappeared and the truck kept driving...

I didn't believe it at first either TrollHole. As I said it was a horrific noise, but it did back right up in the shop. But I'll send ya pics if ya want. Hehe. I haven't got the case all the way out to see the carnage. Worked a few minutes on it tonight but couldn't get the rear driveshaft to compress to get it off the parking brake drum studs. Think I may get parts at Cruiser Outfitters, comes with a new idler shaft it appears. I'm not sure where to score a idler shaft cover though.

I've got lots of used parts too including complete and parts 3 spd t-cases, so it should be no problem to find what you need. Give us a call (we will be closed tomorrow through Saturday as I'll be out playing in Wyoming)

get a wire brush and scr-ap the years of built up crud from around the sliding face on the drive shaft. works a treat. i had this issue when removing the engine jsut last week. then it should just compress and away you go HTH

Thanks for the heads up Oinker, I will definately give that a try. I hope to get it out this weekend and see what I all need so I can give Kurt a call. Thanks for all the advice.
