Run Piggie run
I have been lurking and reading for awhile now. I appreciate all the info. Now it's time for an intro and some pix, cause everybody loves pictures.............I bought this Piggie after seeing it on the local CraigsList. I am currently building restoring a 1964 / 1969 40 series (build up here my FJ40 build.........BTG Lite - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board) , but it has been on hold till buggy wheeling season is over (which is after Memorial weekend cause it gets too hot). In the meantime, the 55 is getting some attention.
I bought this 1970 from the grandson of the original owner. I have all the paperwork and manuals plus an ear full of stories. It's an AZ truck but was rolled one day on a snowy road. No rust and has very few PO mods. It had been sitting since 95-97. I replaced the headgasket, rebuilt the carb, cleaned and painted the wheels, got some new to me tires, new OEM hubcaps (thanks Trollhole for the info), replaced the rear window gear, and generally just cleaned it up. Made it's first trip around the block yesterday.

The winch was an electrical hazard, so it had to go. I have pretty much cleaned up all the PO mods. The next major project is to fix and straighten the windshield frame and install some glass. Then it's time for emissions and registration.

Jack,
Welcome and let me say what a clean rig...very nice. As one of the members of the rust bucket brigade, I am envious. Read the threads and you will find much knowledge from our pig leaders. So many of them have done great work and are willing to share. Haven't seen a tan and white rig in a while. dave

That underhood shot took my breath away...beautiful!
Emissions check on a 1970? That's barbaric.

Thanks to Norm, aka OffRoad Rage, I picked up a parts rig. It's 72 that has lead a rough life. It does have a few select parts I need though. So far, I swapped in the seat belts. They cleaned up suprisingly well. Most even had the factory tags.

The Piggie got some lovin". I winched the front bumper into some sort of shape. I stole the bumper off the rear of the 72 and treated it too. Here's what I ended up with:

Nice looking Pig.
If you make it anywhere near as nice as that 40 it's going to be incredible.Keep up this thread with your progress.

Thanks guys. I installed some new tie rods ends I had from the 40 project. I then tore out the headliner and removed the windshield to check the damage. Here it is.

I should of ordered a new gasket, but I couldn't wait. Windshield is back in and will do for now. Alittle front brake work (sticking driverside front drum) and it's off to the emissions sniffer.

Let the piggie out of the pen today. I printed up the temporary 3 day tag and took it for a spin. 12 miles and a top speed of 50 mph wasn't too bad for the first time out. I need to adjust the front drums alittle more then off to emissions tomorrow. If all goes well it will be licensed and insured by the end of the day.

Nice 55
Cruisers are easy to get on their sides and roofs. You did good on the windshield
Lottsa luck on the emissions. Which is insane to test on that old of vehicle.
Don't make it to nice then you'll be afraid to enjoy it.
And the dents in the bumper just adds character.

Well, I have been driving it all over today, but failed emissions. I'll be tweaking the carb a bit and try again. Either way, it was fun to drive it around. I might even try and hit the dirt later tonite and put it in 4wd. I'll get some pix.

Time for an update. It failed emissions twice now. I did manage to put over 100 miles on it though. Something is still not right with the carb. I have rejetted it to the high alttitude settings and installed a Petronix. The idle solenoids power lead is broken off and is too short to fix. I plan to replace that, do some more carb tweaking and go for a retest next week. Wish me luck.

GL Jack! How many 55's do you see around Phoenix? Probably several that you will be able to wave to once you're mobile!!

Howdy! If the idle solinoid is not hooked up, then that will make a big difference on smog testing. Are you failing at idle speed or cruising? There are at least 1/2 dozen of us driving around the metro Phoenix area. John

I have somebody sending me the idle solenoid. It failed CO's in the cruise test and HC's at idle.

man i keep hiting the wrong button,,, heres some food for thought, maybe help maybe not.
A vehicle that has sharply elevated HC or CO emissions at idle will usually have a noticeable misfire and/or rough idle. The most likely causes here would be:
Fouled spark plug(s);
Shorted spark plug wire(s) or defective plug boot(s);
Vacuum leak;
Burned exhaust valve;
Misadjusted air/fuel mixture; or
Misadjusted carburetor idle mixture.
High CO readings during cruise indicate a rich fuel condition. Causes here may include:
Exhaust leaks (check manifold gaskets and air plumbing connections);
Float level and operation
Power valve operation
High HC during cruise would indicate a steady misfire or loss of compression (leaky exhaust valve).
remember that vacuum guage? low vacuum and a little shaky?
