New Pig Owner. a 1969 in Oklahoma

I just bought a 1969 model. This is my first FJ55: I have wanted one for years! She's in pretty good shape, no rust out (AZ rig) and runs and drives. Funky pipe bumpers, but well done, front is set up as an air tank. Pictures to come. The information on this site is great!

Welcome then.

A '69 that runs AND drives, no rust out?
Don't take too long with those pics...

VERY funky front bumper! It holds air, has a filler valve and a chuck for a hose, and a big storage box. The rear bumper is extended a bit too, pipe also and expanded metal. Other different things: funky van type sunroof over rear seat, LineEx on Roof, some sort of texture paint on the sides, smallish tires, tiny air filter, ala AutoZone.

It has a '77 2F engine and 4 speed gearbox, floor shift conversion for the transfer case and a decent interior (except headliner). And, big surprise, a 40 gallon fuel tank, with skid plate! I did not notice that last night. A guy in AZ renovated her back in the 90s, I got scads of records where he replaced everything from window glass and weatherstipping to front end parts and brakes, mostly from Specter. The interior (more shots tomorrow) has buckets and was redone in the 90s, a pretty nice cloth. The 2F was a low miles engine and got put in in '01. Records for over 12K of work.= for his renovation.. I bought her from a young guy in Oklahoma.

I just drove it home over 70 miles, and she is running, um, err, sorta like crud. Carb mixture super rich, sputtering under load, etc. BUT, she ran up to highway speeds 55-60, and tracked straight and true. Brakes need adjusting and I just noticed a leak from the water pump and she needs a donut gasket.

But, not rusted out, and lots of potential. I have wanted a 55 forever, just never found a decent one at a decent price. I plan on fixing up the uglies and driving her! Not sure what to do about the bumper(s), as they are welded onto the frame.... I want to go with some stock type or white jackman type wheels with a taller tire. a repaint is in order, it's gonna be a hard ride to get the duraback type paint from the sides. I'll most likely leave the linex on the roof, as it looks ok, but the sunroof has to go. Now looking for a suitable panel from a scrap roof to R&R the sunroof. It was originally a grey blue color, I might try to go back that way. It will be used mostly for camping and expedition type runs.

This site rocks....LOTS of great info, glad to be here!
