FJ-55 Hood Pig

Hey fellas, i'd like to first say that i'm excited to finally be a member of the iron pig family!!! I bought Trollhole's pig. Now shes getting a transformation to a trail piggy. It's going to be a slow build but heres the plan.

-Chevy 350 tbi
-sm465/np205
-14 bolt/60 front
-55 leafs with soa and track bar
-ifs steering box
-4 wheel disk brakes
-full cage
-and maybe some paint to get rid of those UGLY CLEMSON COLORS

This thing was hood to da max. Clemson55 takes the cake for rigging!!

Heres some pics so far of the teardown

I'll have some more progress pics up later, for now we are just getting all of the hood shit off.

Wow - so you bought that thing huh?

Don't rub against the paint - it will make ya bleed!

You might be able to pressure wash the bedliner off with a strong arse pressure washer. It has been done before on a 40 I know of.

Are you removing the internal cage too? IIRC the A or B pillar is really close to your noggin'.

Recenter the front axle.

and wheel the snot out of it!

Good to see someone is gonna put the old pig to some use, yes it was ghetto fab but thats what happens when your a poor college student with limited time, money, and tools, your dreams outreach reality. You better paint something on the pig orange someday down the line she deserves it.

ya thing is a peice of shit, sooo what do you guys think on motor choice

i can get a 91 351 windsor that is port injected with stock auto tranny and transfer case for $400. Runs good but needs a full tune up.

OOR i could get a Chevy 350 tbi for 200 that has 150000 miles and throw a sm465/205 combo behind it.

The question is which is a better RELIABLE motor.

Chebby.

351 is a good motor but nothing like a 350 for easy factor.

Cheap, reliable, and done enough to make it well documented.

Plus any gas station/tow shop/bait store/boat rental/diner in the U.S. has a chevy fuel pump collecting dust on a shelf.

and they are just cooler.

opinion of course

Good luck with your rig.

Um, badass, we'll let you know if and when you are "family". Also, there females in the iron pig family, we're not all guys.
That said, badass, doesn't Pighead remember you from your never-ending brake threads? One of which where Pighead had to speak very slowly and loudly, explaining that you adjust the shoes AFTER you put the drums on? You seemed, at the time, to be the epitome of dense noobie. But then I see you managed somehow to do a TBI conversion. Frankly, Pighead was somewhat impressed.
And it seems you're off to a good start on your new Pig...taking off everything offensive.
So, let's call it even, badass. You start off with a clean slate here in the 55 section as far as Pighead is concerned. It looks as though you get a lot done quickly, and that kind of enthusiasm is to be rewarded. Us old grizzled graybeards would take a week to do what you did overnight...are you on meth?
And why an IFS gearbox instead of Scout II?

ya pighead im actually on crack

i have noticed that the frame orientation of the pig is different from a 40, what is the best box to use? I'd love to use a saginaw...

And i'd like to hear more opinions on motor choice, 351 or 350.

Howdy! I'd go Chevy all the way. That way it all fits together from front fan to axle flanges. If your going with 35's or 37's, I would not recommend the IFS steering box. Go Saginaw, Scout or otherwise. I am running a 4 bolt Sag from a 77 full size Chevy sedan, and it gives me one finger steering even in the rocks when I'm aired down. I have mine mounted behind the radiator crowwmember. Kinda tight, but doable. After 16 years, I finally cracked the frame a bit, so I am rebuilding the mount which will be bulletproof. I'm takin lots of pix so I can do a build thread when I get done. John

Oh, crack is it? Just curious...
I did my research, decided Scout box was best. It just fits better. YMMV.
350?/351? yer talking greek to Pighead. Pighead only knows F/2F.

Howdy! Yea, the Scout setup is probably easier, but when I did this rig, I don't think I had ever heard of using one. I don't think AA even still offers the mounting bracket I used. It had a recessed center to weld to the frame, and then 4 legs sticking out for the 4 bolts on the Sag. The inner frame channel cracked just below where I had welded the bracket on. It is cracked right on the bend where it tucks inside the outer frame channel. After a day of pounding rocks, I noticed on the hiway that the steering wheel was not straight anymore. Found the Sag. was tilting about 15 degrees. Oh well...... John

Nice job on removing all that uglyness Scout, FJ60 or Saginaw box off an Astro van work best utilizing the stock frame position on a pig

You're making great progress!

I think that was a snorkel attachment - I can't tell exactly what you are looking at in the pic.

one man's masterpeice is another man's nighmare huh? i'm glad to see you saving that pig, i've seen so many threads about it in the past i feel like it's an old friend or something ..... so is this going to be a trail rig or what? have you considered bobbing the rear end to get rid of some of the overhang? would look cool if you cut it and re-attached the tailgate part i think

not really school started back up so i've been busy with that but will get some work done this weekend, hopefully i can get the engine pulled sunday. I already have everthing loose, but it looks like i'm gonna have to separate the trans from the motor in order to get it out.

You shouldn't have to separate the tranny/tcase/motor to get it all out. You need a good engine hoist with enough lift and an engine leveler. I've done several this way.

Finally got motor pulled today, it was a pita considering that i had to pull it in a field

Motor is a 91 ford 5.8 liter 351w efi with 4 speed automatic overdrive tranny and 2.6:1 low range tcase with electronic linkage shifter buttons.

Heres some pics of what i had to deal with

We had to use a tractor cause a engine hoist wouldn't work in alabama mud
