I may have FUBAR'ed my trail pig's engine, but I also made progress on Lily.
I now have gas flowing to the carb! It turns out that the original fuel pump on the '81 donor engine required a spacer to work properly and it had remained on the block when I removed the '81 fuel pump. I replaced it with the pump I orig. had on the orig. '77 engine which I knew worked well. The spacer, however, was not letting the '77 fuel pump engage with the crankshaft, now matter how hard or long I cranked the engine over. So, I pulled the fuel pump, discovered what was going on and re-installed the '77 fuel pump without the spacer and it immediately began to fill the fuel filter and then the carb. Gas had been in the fuel line almost right up to the filter all along. Easy fix. I also finally figured out what was wrong with my throttle linkage (from the firewall to the carb). I was missing a bracket that held the 'throttle rod' in place. Found that in my pile of 'extra parts' (hee, hee) and slapped it on the carb. Now the gas/throttle all works well. Now I need to confirm exactly which vaccuum hoses I can leave disconnected, which I need to connect, and which to plug, etc. I am planning on making an appointment for the exhaust work soon. More pics to follow. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

I made an appoinment at the exhaust shop but had a few things to finish up first. I installed the vavle cover, air filter assembly, slapped the hood back on, swapped front bumpers from the trail pig, and had to secure the exhaust under the rig until I got to the shop. This required cutting the last foot off in order to shove the exhaust up into the engine bay and hold it in place with the skid plate temporarily. That worked and got me to the muffler shop. Exhaust is now finished and it sounds pretty good.
The engine is running a bit rough and sounds like it is sucking a lot of air. I need to figure out which vacuum hoses to connect and which I will not need now that the carb has been 'desmogged'. I'm partially done with this...Valves and timing sound pretty good. I'll have to tinker with it a bit more. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

So, when does everyone get to see this pig named 'Rusty'? I am begining to wonder...Hee, hee. Oh, and how about a rear end pic, just to make you drool. I have been thinking of bringing the rig into a local fab shop to have them alter the rear bumper. I would like to incorporate a license plate holder and more of a tube cage welded to the lower ladder that would more securely hold down the gas can. I have a nice FJ40 OEM license plate holder that I plan on mounting to the ladder/gas can cage. Should look cool. I would also like for them to remove the old latching mechanism, that uses a camming lever and seperate pin to unlock and open the swing-out portion of the bumper. I have seen some cool latches, with no parts to lose, that should be easy to source and work well. I also would like them to weld/install a hydraulic shock to help keep the swing-out open (on hills, in general, etc.) I'll keep you all posted on those mods. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

Lou, you gotta get out more! Ha ha. ha.
More updates: I have been 'fine tuning' my ride over the past week or so. I have been driving to work each day and each day I remember something else that needs attention. For now I'll stick to the engine. I am doing a complete desmog of this engine. The carb had been made 'bionic' (desmogged and built from the orig. '77 and an '83 carb for the best of both eras!) by Jim C. and the donor engine was also desmogged when I purchased it. It already had the air rail plugs as well as some exhaust/vacuum ports blocked. I am still figuring out what to leave connected and what to plug and what to remove and... First pic: Just a shot of the engine with some extra vacuum hoses still left. Second pic: I had to plug this hole in the intake manifold and I bought this brass plug for it. Third pic: Plugged. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

Here are a couple pics of the PO desmog attempts. Unfortunately he decided to crimp/ weld or shove crap in/plug the orig. air cleaner, I had hoped to use some rubber caps I have seen others use. I decided to stay with this air cleaner and valve cover as per Jim C's advise (lower profile, etc.). We'll see, I may just leave it as is, it seems to work. The last pic is of some other caps I found to plug some vacuum ports. These work great.

I have to plug one of the holes on the dist. cap, which I did with one of those handy rubber vacuum caps. The other is connected to the base of the carb with vacuum hose. The last should be left open to air/vent. I picked up some goodies (sm. filter, brass barb fitting, sm. clamp, vacuum hose) from NAPA and will be attaching this to the opening on the dist. cap and finding a place in the engine compartment to attach and then vent/pull clean air. I'll post a pic when I finish.
I got this idea from Guyute on the Cascade Cruiser forum. I also need to re-tourque the head bolts and other items here and there. I still need to toss the flywheel cover on. Should re-adjust the valves again. I also need to address my taillight/blinker issues. Then perhaps upgrade the brakes, suspension, and steering, and, and, and. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

Hey Lou, the towers, bars, and 'basket' were all made by Yakima. I used to work for an outdoor retailer and got a great deal on it all. I usually toss all our light stuff up top and tie it down with a cargo net. It's lightweight but works great.

Just a quick follow up.
I still have not figured out exactly what to disconnect and what to leave under the hood for the desmog. I finall sent Jim C. a note to ask for help. If anyone else has any advice let me know. I have posted what has been done up to this point earlier in the thread. I am basically still confused on some of the vac. lines and whether or not I need to remove some sorta 'emissions computer' and where is it? The truck runs OK but is sluggish. I know I have some vac/exhaust issues still to figure out. Anybody else do a desmog? Any ideas on the vac lines and such? I thought I would also post up pics of the latest in the desmog/engine work. Pic 1- My pinky is pointing to the opening in the dist. I capped and my other finger is pointing to the vac line/air I vented through a filter... Pic 2- I stretched the vac line from the dist. to a clip I mounted to the radiator and connected it to a small air filter. I saw this idea from fellow mudder Guyute's desmog write-up. Seems to work and is slick. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |

I am also wrestling with front/rear turn signals and a rear brake light that won't work. I am still reading threads on this stuff but if anyone has any advice, again feel free to chime in anytime.
I swapped out some bulbs with new ones to see if that would help the situation-no dice. I also ckecked fuses-everything looks good. Do these 'ol pigs have light relays? If so, where? Pics of my new stash of replacement bulbs (for both piggies)... ...and check out the newish-looking horn button I scored off Ebay. It really sets off the interior, one of the last final missing interior links.

I found some details about a bunch of the smog-related stuff on the driver's side of the engine bay. My freakin' Haynes manual ended up being the most help-strange. It had specific details for my rig's emissions as well as good diagrams, info/explanations, pictures, etc. about each part. Glad I found that.
I ended up removing the Vacuum Surge Tank and both VSV's (they were mounted to the top of the Vacuum Surge Tank) as well as all the vac hoses that were connected to them. I also removed the VCV's that were mounted on top of the thermo. housing. This left me with a few more vac ports to plug. I used some small rubber/plastic vac plugs to cap off the diaphram on the carb, the BVSV connected to the thermo. housing, and then I set up another mini-filter to the charcoal canister. I then took it for a spin and it did seem a bit better. I think I have other issues I need to decipher now, but that is another post. Please post up advice/ideas still if you have any. Suggestions always welcome. Pic 1- Here is the Vacuum Surge Tank, VSV's (bottom of pic) assorted vac lines, and I am pointing to the end of the charcoal canister I vented. Pic 2- Pointing to the VCV's I wound up removing. __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html Last edited by Lucy_FJ55; 09-13-07 at 10:05 PM. Well, I have recently parked Lily back in the garage. :(
I have been driving her around town occassionally and have slowly had the confidence to drive on the highway and really rev the engine. The rig seems peppy around town and initially I was very pleased. However, I have been experiencing some problems trying to rev the engine in 3rd and 4th gear-seems to bog down/has loss of power. I have been trying to figure out the proper desmog for this application and have been edu-ma-cating myself about all that. I suspect some vacleaks and maybe an exhaust leak at the header. I have a thread about desmog questions in the 60's forum currently. That has been slowly helping. Unfortunately I have not heard back from Jim C, I may send him another email asking for specific advice/info on my set up. I am nervous about the engine and do not want to run/damage it more than I have to. I am begining to wonder if I am not running lean and burning my new valves-or worse. I think I need to re-tourque, re-tighten, re-adjust the valves, re-time, etc. I guess I don't even know what to ask right now. 60's forum 'Desmog' thread link= http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/176800-desmog-help.html __________________ 1970 FJ55 Lucy-Trail Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...ml#post3162540 1977 FJ55 Lily-Princess Pig http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-pi...e-old-pig.html |
