Wilma's Buildup thread - FJ45LV

Time for my build.

Specs: '64 FJ45LV, 327/3 on da tree/ no floors

What its getting:

Dontated from a 1987 FJ60, 2F, 4 speed, split case

SOA with 35's and Stazworks beadlocks

Bob Firstine's shackle reversal and saginaw box kit on order

Toybox with 4.7's is on order - 3 week wait from Marlin

Fine spline front axle with FJ80 e-locker and disk brakes, PIG inner axles and Bobby's chromo longs

Fine spline rear axle with detroit locker and disk brakes

new floors! I'll try to get close to original. I might even try to graft in the FJ60 floors I have off of the donor. But I'm not going to be picky as long as it works and doesnt look hacked.

Body protection.

SOR's seat covers and interior stuff to make it a little more cushy.

This is going to become my primary family wheeling rig. I'll be throwing a decent paint job on it and making everything work, but I'm not going to go as crazy as I had originally thought. I have one more major project going on at the shop and then I'll start in on her.

Why would you want to put a round tire in a square wheel well?

nice! looking forward to some progress pics! BTW, the 2F intake shifts the carb .75" to the drivers side compared to the F, and interferes with any chance of using the booster adapters availible... I couldnot get a booster/master combo to clear the Aisin carb...

Mike,

You might consider chopping a section out of the firewall of the 60 for the brake booster. Then use the 60 booster. Or I can hook you up with a '77 40 series firewall section/booster/pedal assembly from a parts truck in the yard...

YOu using 10 spline or 19spline input gear on that toybox?
I had to take a belt sander to my output shaft on my 19spine to get it to go together correctly.. Took about 30seconds to clean it up..

Its going between a 4 speed and a split case out an 87 FJ60 so thats 19 spline, right?. I got the 4.7's in it too

ya, I just had Marlin build this one for me so it has the spring. I didnt have a top shift t case lying around so I splurged for once I use those in all of my mini truck dual case builds. It should be included in all kits.

you sure there's a motor underneath those spaghetti lines?

i hope you plan on desmogging...you'll loose all the intestines and acually be able to show off a motor.

ROFLMAO

That was my first thought also you can only see the engine down by the block drain.

But I was polite and did not post.

Somehow I don't think moving that 60 to the back yard from the front yard was what the town had in mind.......

That looks like the longer tail shaft H42 with the spacer?
I"m not sure if it's splined all the way up to the back of the tranny like the shorter H42 or not. But.. Here's a little tidbit I ran into on my H41 toybox. I swapped over the FJ60 top cover for an FJ40 one and the original reverse light switch was too deep and hit the adapter plate. Check that.. I think I had to use the FJ60 reverse light switch which is on all the time until you hit reverse.. Still haven't fixed that on mine..

If it's splined all the way thru then remove the spacer behind the tranny, check your clearance on the splines of the output shaft that go into Marlin's 19spline input, Put a clamp collar on the tailshaft of the tranny to keep the output shaft from walking back in and your done. For safety sake I had a 10spline clamp that had been machined by marlin which was different but I used the thickness.. Ordered the correct metric clamp collar from McMasterCarr and chucked it up in a lathe and matched the thickness of Marlins.. Don't think I needed to do that but didn't want it to interfere.
Great progress!

Mike,

If you need one of those FJ40 4-sp top covers let me know and I'll bring it to CMCC for you. I have an extra...

Gonna use that steering shaft on the "lawn ornament"? If not, mind bringing it to CMCC with you? Let me know on $$ or trades...

Thanks for the info.

Nick, bring it to CMCC and if I don't need it, I'll send it back to you. I'm probably not going to use the steering shaft, but I haven;t been able to free it from the firewall. Its rusted in there pretty solid. But I'll work on it with some PB and heat..

Well, plans changed. Wilma now has a new owner. I have too much on my plate to start on her for atleast a year or more, so instead of letting her sit, I opted to let her go. Her new owner has similar plans and is getting the 2F/4speed/split case with her. I will get another once time allows.

So who wants to buy a new Toybox with 4.7's?

Well that would be me.. I go down to Mike's to start picking up parts this week end. I'm not quite the fabrication .parts collectiong /lawn ornement/4runner grave yard having internet presence as Foxfab.
But I have daily driven a cruiser of some form since the early 90's. I daily drove a 40 for 7 years and then moved to DD a fj62, due to an expanding family and sold the fj40. I always regreted selling it, but I told myself I would get another oneday.
then the idea changed to a 45 of some sort and I have been stuckk on pipe dreaming about a fj45 for years now. I bugged Mike weekly once he got Whilma "hows my lv" I would like to think in some instances keeping him going. knowing his affinity for things "mini" and need for things 2 door. i told him I wanted to be first in line if he ever sold it.
So my plans are alot like Mikes first order of business is to get the 2f in and running then start on the body work(ie get floors in) then p/s get it painted and put back together and registered then think about the lift.
I already have a set of 6 16x8 3.5"bs fj40 hub capped wheels that were widened by stockton that I had done for my fj62 but when I swapped in a the rear fzj80 axle i had another set made with 5.25 bs the wheels have a 2 year old 10,000 mile set of bfj mt's on them. so that will be the rubber for the lv for awhile. While Stockton makes excellent wheels iI waited along time for each set. so long in fact I decided to keep the unused se tknowing how long it would take to replace them
I have been reading most of the threads in the fj45 area and have found all the information extremely useful. I down loaded the color swatches and plan on painting it factory colors and colr scheme. i don't think I will take it back to the lily white and salmon but and leaning toward a lily wwhite and river blue or grey combo thats along way off so we'll see when the time comes.
last i suppose i should change my user name in that it doesn't suite represent my growing harde of 2 cruisers

If you don't know of Jason's artistic talents, check out the 25 section

Don't fret all, I will still be heavily involved in rare Cruisers. I just didnt want this one to sit while I work on the current project. I have a few more LV parts in the works

well I made the first trip to Fox's to pick up lv parts. yesterday. I was able to load the doors hood glass seats fenders and other loose body parts into my fj62 and trailer to bring home to startcleaning up and getting primed.

the plan is to get the 2f in at Mikes then bring the rest of it to my house in December sometime, which should work out fine in that I have more thean enought to start with in the body parts i brought home yesterday.

here are a couple piccs of teverything getting loaded up.
