I have an old Vintage Air set up in my fj40. I pulled the compressor and will be replacing it with a fj60 compressor. I need a pressure sw. from an fj60 and some other hardware to make it functional. I Like this set up because the bracketry is already there(saves money$$$) and the pulley will match the other pulleys.

i was planning on using a vintage air setup as well. Matt used something like a Vintage Air, but as i recall, it was some other brand. from what i have read about these aftermarket setups is that the combine a/c with heat and defrost. the thing is that you will have to install vents as the LV's never had these. Billet Industries makes the ones i will be using. Also you can go to TLC4x4's web and see what they have done, which is basically what i just described. the net results, from what i can figure is we will get rid of all the old factory heaters, which do look cool, but don't work well, at least for a/c. we will have to itgrate the aftermarket fan assemly into the underside of the dash which will do all the handling of the air flow. i like the idea of fjwagon's using a fj60 a/c bracket for a factory look, but question do you have to use the fj60 compressor? it would be old or expensive to get new. modern rebuilt a/c compressor's are not too expensive, not sure about the toy fj's tho? however, i figure if you get a kit from Vintage Air all the parts will be there, but maybe we could buy just the necessary items, but that scares me a little. fjwagon, how about posting some pics of what you are doing? Jason, you should go back thru Matts thread and look at what he did. Every time i go back thru his job, i see something new. but mainly i get frustrated at the slow pace of my project, but i have soooo much on my plate right now, i have no choice. sorry for the rambling.

fjwagon thanks for the input on the vintage air I was looking thorugh thier site that looks like a decent set up.
i think what I am going to do is wait....
I think I will leave the AC compressor on and wory about getting the truck running and revist the AC/heat thing later. I have read and reread pages 43 of Matt's thread and plan on doing the in dashvent thing and keep the stock defrost vents. i have all the stock 872f ac engine sid eof the firewall components so so we'll see how that goes.
rambleing are what threads are for

on another note I sent off my carb and distributor to Jim C. yesterday to get rebuilt and recurved for no smog. be nice when I get that all back and can start getting the engine back together.

Ironically enough I was buying hardware for my fj40 and after paying for it the owner of vintage air caught up with me as I was going out the door couple of years ago. He basically wanted to know if I was going to install an A/ C unit in my rig. I said it already had a vintage air installed and was thinking of changing things after I painted it. Unknownst to me, he said he was the owner and would like for me to take it to his place so we could fingure how we could make it better.
I have seen the fj60/vintage setup in past and it does work. I have not seen the new version of vintage air for the fj40. I will take him up on his offer when the time comes. .
I have no pics, I rebuilt the engine and used fj60 hardware so when the time comes I will be able to bolt on the fj60 compressor I have stowed away. I hope it still works.. BTW, some auto parts stores give good warrenties on the a/c units.

I have also heard that vintage air will sell part of the kit if need be. I have not decided what A/C setup I will using when it come to restoring the lv. Once I locate an engine for it I will know more. I do like how mat's lv turned as far as the a/c is concern.

Keep up the good work.

what type of engine are you trying to locate? i have the F out of my 66 which i think i will be selling. i don't think it is worth crating it and saving for the future. not like we are talking about a Hemi or something.

Actually I can use those push rods from your 66 if you decide to part it out. . I got my 65 to run but needs a carb and push rods. I want to be able move it around in the meantime. I want to install a diesel in mine. So the search of diesel that is readily available here in the states continues. Seems the options are 4 or 6cylinder diesels are good opions if you want a spring over. V8's are too big too for what I'm looking for.

what about installing a DuraMax out of a wrecked Chevy 2500+? that would be badass, but a lot of work. lots of computers and electro shit to have to deal with. but man what a ride that would be. that would make for one fast LV that could pull stumps. are you thinking about a toyota diesel?

Ok BACK to Wilma!!!!.

got just about everything out of the dash and off the fire wall. ( cheap stereo, crappy heater with rotted hoses contected to the defrost fixed thingy's the rest of the 4 wheel drive shifter. just some random wires here and there and the light wiring harness. which I am going to keep in there right now so as to replace later, kind of use it as a template.

I am thinking i will seal up all the holes with new metal and start from scratch.I am thinking the lighter hole as well as the ash tray are goig to get sealed up as well. I figure if anyone dreams of smoking in my lv that will be the last thing they do. I think Mike gave me a patch to go over the stereo hole as well. hopefully today /tommorow will get it all cleaned up and primed.

Why would you want to put a round tire in a square wheel well?

Butt most of theis week was spent on getting the dash all worked out. i had removed a bunch of buttons and things and am going to start from scratch. so i weled sot all the little fuse holder thingys and everything else and figure to start form scatch on all the new stuff. I did order son AC vents so i could fit them in now . I went with the billet vents that I picked up from Summit racing. thay had so all machined ones but I went with eth eones that have black vents in that the all pokished ones were a bit to bling for me. i cut the holes for the AC vents in so i could weld up everything else. still waiting on the mail for the section to patchup the hole left by the stereo. but i have sealed up the ashtray and the kighter hole L(

thanks its getting there slowly....
did a couple more coats of fill and senaded it off to get the dash smooth. it is getting better
i decide to tear into the rear quarter panel that is bad. I cut out a nice square to patch in new metal. and found that the whole rearchannel that houses the tail gate hinges was literally packed with dried out mud. so I made the decision to cut some holes down the lenght to clean it out and get a coat of epoxy primer in the inside of the cannel.. oh well got to make it right

In my book, there is only one way to do things and that is the right way the first time. Take your time and enjoy it. When you are finished you will know what you have and be proud of the fact that you did it your self.

Well I am heading out on vacation tommorow. if you call it that we are heading1000 miles in 2 days with the dog and 2 2.5 year old girls. this is guna be fun....
Anyway been slowly working on Wilma over the last week or so. took the day off today because my wife wanted to pack the car for the trip which left me 5 hours int he garage with wilma

earlier this week i finished up the dash so far just waiting on the dash piece for the stereo hole....

i next started the rear passenger quarter panel repair. basically the rib second from the bottome had rot all along its lenght as well as the rear corner. i started off y cutting out the rust and cleaning out the mud then getting it cleaned up and primed. then i had gotten a chunk of a lv being parted out unfortunaely when I got in on the part out someone had already claimed the fender son I only got half of the rear quarter ribbing. i i ended up using two of the ribs and welded them together in the middle. the more i do the body work the less you will be able to tell they're were 2 peices.
and
then i started on the rear corner. I decided to weld a curved peice inside and then weld on another curved peice on top of it give it that extra stiffness for the corner. maybe thats a bad idea we will see how it shapes out.
so here are a bunch of pics of the progress. I think I am getting better about takeing the pics??
I also ordered a bunch of engine stuff and some shackels as well.
Jason
