Ok I have started to get rolling on Wilma. have gotten my primer, built a painting booth in one bay of my garage. with an exuast fan and drop down drop clothes to keep the area enclosed. came out decent . anyway I have wire brushed and aircraft stripped just about all the loose parts (hood, passenger side doors lift gate, bib, aprons, bezel tranny hump, side panel and tail gate covers ect. ect) and then put 2 coats of epoxy primer on them. all in all they look decent many steps left before real paint, but as I got started i had a few questios on what other people have done or will do.
1) I cleaned out and shot the inside of the doors with primer. are poeple painting the insides of the doors with a finish coat or just leaving as primer top coated. I do plan to Dynamat the insides of the doors so it might not be that important.
2) ame question as above but for the hood what do people generally do with the underside of the hood. on my old fj40 I would just spray some rattle can black every once in awhile but this isn't my old fj40
3) next up to clean and prime are the fenders. which brings up what people are using for the under coat, and what do people paint the insides of the engine bay, same as the color on the outside of said peice or something different?
$) and lastly, for the moment, as I take the doors apart how careful do i need to be with the window felts and the windowscrapper thing at the area where the window enters the door? are there replacement peices or do i need to be extra careful with my old brittle ones?
thanks
will try and post some pics later this week
Jason

I think I am going to paint the inside of the doors. It won't be concourse but it will make me feel better knowing the rust demons aren't in there. Underside of all LV hoods would be black along with the underside, firewall, and inside the fender wells. The FJ40s from 64 and up seemed to have the underside of the fenders painted the body color as well as the aprons and bib. These were all black in the LV models. As far as undercoating goes, it was standard on the LV and an option for the other models. I haven't looked for felt yet, I am hoping it is available somewhere.

thanks that is good info. that is nice that i won't have to waste so much expensive paint on the insides of the bib and fenders I am thinking the under side of my fenders will be the chassis black I use on the frame (and engine compartment/ firewal)

did you get your stickers?

my thoughts for the inside of the doors was some rattle can marine engine type paint, in that it was really hard to get my spray gun in all the nooks and crannies of the inside of the doors. to me it looked like the inside of my doors were bare metal!! i don't want to leave them bare though.

I even got to drive it today. even if it was only being towed by a bobcat and my seat consisted of a tire. but when we pushed it backward up the driveway it really felt like it was driveing ... ecspet for the fact I was on a tire, could see the ground was holding up a muffler from dragging with my foot. and there are no doors or glass in the truck it really felt like i was driving
not sure how much more weight she can loose. anymore and her name will hav eto change to Mary Kate. but we got the chevy 327 out of it today and got he engine mounts from the donor 87 fj60 out and beed blasted. as well as slpped the 31's from the donor fj60 on it for its "lift"did a bunch of other little odds and ends but basically we got it ready to swap the 2 f in,(and moved a bunch of fj25 stuff from one bunker to another in Mike's yard)
unfortunately I never broke out my camara. maybe Mike you could snap some pics of the progress tommorow

The old 327 mounts are out and the FJ40 mounts are back in

I hope they're on the right sides. Only 3 of the 4 holes lined up. The 4th was just out of sight through the bracket.

Ok we got rolling on Whilma today. i got to Mike's about 10am but other than the awkward moment when Mike had forgot I was coming over and answered the door in a silk robe and bunny slippers, we got a bunch done. and so much closer to finally bringing the rest of her home to my house.
We were able to pull the 87' 2f engine up from under the house and slide it into the engine bay and bolt it in. it fit perfectly onto the fj40 mounts. unfortunatly we were not able to mount the tranny as well in that we need to get the flywheel resurfaced. but it was nice to see the engine in. I also spent an hour or so stripping the wiring harness out of the fj60 not sure what I will need bt it will be nice to have it all.
here are some pics

Nice work! Nothin' like working outside in the driveway in December!

Make sure you replace ALL the heater hoses on the motor now before you get everything else in the way. Specially the little piece under the water pump. Just finished a head swap 'cause mine was leakin' and I didn't notice until too late. Oops...

I plan on replacing all the hoses, and I just picked up an F air cleaner. so the old air cleaner and all the smog stuff comes off and the carb and diswt get shiped to Jim C. to get retuned for life with out smog.
not sure if you can notice the lovely pooring ran as we were dropping the engine in but yeah december wrenching outside has its draw backs. I can't wait to get it into my garage

I am sure you all are as tired as I am of pictures of Wilma getting moved around. so hopefully these will be the last ones for awhile. and I can start posting pictures of prgress. but getting her into my garage is huge prgress in my eyes.
'cruiser_nerd" aka Jim dropped her off this morning and we pushed pulled it into the garage.

as I said before the doors hood and fenders have already been stripped wire brused and sprayed with an epoxy primer so its just doing the rest of the body , and ofcourse replacing the front floors.
here are some pics of her arriving and in the garage.
