Hope everyone had a merry x-mas.... Just got back this evening from the wifes parents place, figured I would do a little work. Also got to drive the 40 about 400 miles in less than a 24 hour period, I love road trips in that thing

Got home tonight and figured I would get the tranny hump cut out for the shift levers. Made some marks and started cutting. Had to put it back on and off about a dozen times, but got it where I wanted it. Then I placed the rings over the top and drilled all the holes for the screws and installed them. The T-case ring I had to put in the vice and heat with the torch and slowly bend the aluminum to contour to the hump itself. Turned out pretty good.

I then spent a few hours and stripped down the T case lever again, took it down to every piece. Also stripped down the drivers side seat to every part. Plan is to get up in the morning and start sandblasting, have quite a few parts, probably take a couple hours and then start shooting epoxy primer and paint later in the morning.

Might have some people coming up next weekend to do some sewing, seat pans and tracks need to be ready

Matt

last 3, I take pics of some stuff before I take it apart. I was taking pics of the seat parts and my helper was helping out.

Figured I would post a pic of him, he likes to get into the action any chance he gets

Took the day off today, so got some quality LV time in today. I might have a sewing team showing up this weekend so I needed to get my seat metal ready to go. So started off the day sandblasting.

Blasted the front and rear seat pans, all the seat tracks, all brackets + I blasted all the T case linkage and some other misc. stuff. Once the seat hardware is out of the booth I'm going to hang the linkage and driveshafts and get those epoxy primed and painted black. Painting went real good except for one of the seat pan brackets had a crack in it I can't believe I didn't see that before or at least when I was priming I had just started shooting the first coat on that pan and saw that. So I didn't spray any more color on that pan, but finished up everything else. Let it dry over night and fix it tomorrow. Try to get it primed again and sprayed tomorrow.

I then went to work on the seat belts. Doesn't look like much, but it took a while. The pics pretty much explain it all. I decided to thread the front seat belt attachment point into the side of the seat frame, that seemed to work well and Poser thought of that one when he was up here.....good idea dude. I made plates for the rewind mech. 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 6" and then welded a 7/16 nut onto the plate. I drilled holes through the floor and spot welded it into place. Essentially sits directly on a rib underneath, the same width as the rib. When the body comes back off, all that will be seamed sealed around it, primed and painted. In the event of an accident, the rewind mech would have to pull that plate through the floor...I don't see that happening. I made L brackets to hold the rewind mech. I welded a nut on the back side and had to drill a hole for the alignment pin. I then had to cut a hole in that triangle piece to relief it for the nut and alignment pin on the back side of the L bracket. Drilled a hole in the bottom of the L bracket and good to go......I guess I don't see it pulling out anywhere???

The L bracket will be painted in contiental beige. You actually won't see it since the carpet is going to go over the top of it also.

Read the thread every 3or 4 weeks. Let me add to the others. Graet work, great thread.

I noticed some NOS 45/55 side mirrors on ebay now...item # 8024574800. Not mine, just saw you were looking for some last week.

If anyone hasn't sent you dimensions of the 62 console, I can do tomorrow when there is some light outside.

Mike

Saw the mirrors, thanks. I actually got a set coming from Cruiser dan last week, along with a couple other things.

Got the dimensions and some pics off the 60 series forum after I posted a thread asking for pics and dimensions last week. I actually have a console coming out of a 89 from another mud member. I don't think that I'm going to use the console itself, but I think I am going to use the guts out of it and make my own center console.

Thanks, Matt

Glad to hear that; I didn't think the plasticy look would go well in what you are creating...

I noticed that crack in the picture of your cat. Thought about posting to ask if you were going to beef up that upper seat bracket since they always crack there (weak point of those era seats). Guess I should have posted. Seatbelts look great, as always top notch work.

Yea, I saw the crack weeks ago and had plans on fixing it. Sandblasted it, primed it and never saw it until paint? I'm loosing it, I know that now........

Got busy last night, so nothing got done. I plan on fixing that seat pan tonight and get it painted. I also plan on priming and painting all that other stuff black tonight.

Thanks on the seat belts, I think they will work well. When I do the final assembly the belts themselves are going to get dye'd black again so they should look new. Also plan on painting the plastic on the rewind mech with a paint or dye designed for plastic continetal beige so it should match the interior.

Matt

Executed the plan tonight Got home, welded up the crack, ground it back with the die grinder, turned up the presure on the blaster and smoothed it out.

Few pics of tonights action. Got that pan primed and painted, then moved onto the other stuff. Sprayed all the T case linkage and a few other parts. Probably over kill on the driveshafts, spraying them with DP90LF and MTK single stage ureathane, but what the hell. Driveshafts gotta be nice and shiny too right?

Not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow night? I have to load up the booth with some house trim wood blocks that my wife stained tonight. Going to spray a couple coats of polyureathane on them for her tomorrow, but that shouldn't take more than an hour.

Mother in law should be here Friday........then the sewing begins......

Doesn't look like much, but needed to get my seats ready for my sewing team They plan on being here tomorrow at noon, so I needed to be ready to go.

My auto body buddy had a 2003 wrecked VW that I robbed the bucket seats out of for the heating pads in them. I stripped those down tonight and got the pads out of them and got them glued into my foam. LV's gotta have heated seats right Also going to get the roller switches still and mount them into my console so the wife can have 5 heat settings.

That took a while, the rest of the evening was getting the sewing equipment ready. I got all the material out, threaded 4 bobbins with the 2 colors of thread I bought, set up some tables, etc....

One question though. I know someone here said they got new seat foam for there 79+ seats. I also got new foam for the drivers side since it was pretty tore up. If you look in the pics you can see the really white seat foam, that is the new one from SOR. I got it last week, but just opened the box tonight. Notice how it is considerably taller than the OEM foam???? Is that right? Do you just stretch the covers over it that much? Some might say, just make your cover bigger, but what if you bought pre-made covers, what then? I also don't want them to look different, is the foam going to squeeze in there and look the same?

Don't get it?

Matt

One other thing on the seat foam.

Online order form SOR part # 310-82D as specified on the packing list also.

So it shows that it is right???

I'd bet that the OEM foam started out the same size or close to the SOR foam. You got it right in that you just cram the new stuff in the covers. Might need a ratchet strap to help compress the foam to make it all fit so you can hook the hog rings from the cover to the seat frame.
