That first piece fits up under the dash, between the dash and fire wall, around where the column goes through. I think it just helps stiffen the dash and helps support the stock column. When people hoist themselves in, using the steering wheel, it puts some stress on the lower part of the dash, where the stock steering is bolted.
I see your going with the two bucket seats, did you give any consideration to the 60/40 split front seat idea?

That's what I kinda thought, but I think I need a pic of it. I just can't seem to wrap my head around how it goes in there and I don't remember taking it out
Yes, I did give it some thought, I actually liked the split bench idea. But, I have the bucket seats out of the 79 and I sorta like the look of them. I also wanted a center console, although not totally needed.

Hey Matt, if you still need some pics here in a couple of hours i can get you some. I have my dash tore apart right now but i do remember what goes where, and which pedal is which. Even at my old age, or is it that i marked them before i tore them out. Think it is the latter.

Pics would be good. This won't be the last question over the next week or so on where stuff goes. I took some of this stuff apart and so did my buddy, so there are a couple parts that I am unsure of what they are or where they go.
It was a freaking mess underneath there when we took it apart. The airtools and hammers were in full swing when it was taken apart almost a year ago now. Probably should have marked stuff......but, I looked back through this entire thread and I couldn't find anything where I said I was really smart and knew what I was doing
Pics please, Matt

those pics are great!! I see the bracket underneath there, I should be able to figure out which way it's situated once I get it up on that area. It's going to be coming out again, but I want it in there when I fit everything up.
The pic I took of my pedals I have them backwards in the pic. The pedal on the left is supposed to be to the right, the brake pedal.
Thanks, Matt

Got home tonight, started on reliefing the tranny pan tonight. I figured out how much room I was going to need and basicly cut about 3/4" over and 3" back at an angle. I then flattened out the compound curve and hammered it over to meet my cut. I tacked it in place and temporarily mounted the pan back up and mouted the drive shaft to make sure it cleared before I welded it. Before it slightly touched when I turn the shaft, now about 3/4" of room. Should be good. Welded up the outside and inside solid. Then ground down the outside smooth and went over the bottom of the pan with the zip wheel to clean it up. For the pan, just in case it leaks down the road, I didn't want to spend a lot of time painting with epoxy primer and single stage ureathane, so it got the foo foo can treatment. Little high gloss ACE premium enamel, good to go. Let it dry for few hours while I did other things, put the magnet back in, filled it full of tranny fluid and put it back on.....done
Started installing some of the other parts. They are all going to get sandblasted, epoxy primed and painted. But for now, they got the brief wire wheel so I didn't have to handle rusty parts. I had to drill and tap a few holes on the passenger side vent, few more on the firewall. I have the template also for the aluminum floor mount swivel ball for the IDIDIT column I ordered. I cut that out and started marking where I need to cut and weld in metal. I drilled out the spot welds on the cage nuts on the back side of the firewall. I'm going to have to hammer the metal straight a bit, but hopefully this weekend I can start welding metal in there. On thing on that swivel ball, and this might be hard to explain. I can drill the 2 7/8" hole in the firewall that the template calls for and the hole will be right to the edge of the rib on the engine side. There is an aluminum ring that is about 5/8" wider than the hole and about 3/16" thick. I will have to relief the rib for that aluminum ring on the firewall side. It probably will look like a 1/4" slot about an 1" long right up against the firewall. I don't think it will hurt the strength of the firewall or rib at all.
More pics to come.
Matt

Did someone say a FJ60 wiper motor would work in this so a person could have a 2 speed wiper motor?
I'm using the wiper switch out of the 79 FJ40, would that wiper motor work?
This is a pic of the LV wiper motor.

Would this filler neck work with the lv, I believe it's out of a 73 FJ40?
Reason I want to use it is that the lv filler neck was not bolted through the quarter panel. I would like to utilize the 3 bolt holes on this neck and then bolt through the quarter panel to the filler neck so it doesn't vibrate?

I don't think I need any questions answered, but I wanted to point this out. I was going to ask for pics on how this fit up, but I started to figure out where it went.
But, I don't think I will be able to use it. Since the AC unit has to mount directly up agains the firewall and go a little bit up and underneath the dash, I don't think I can use it. I still want the vent, so I will probalby end up making a plate that bolts down in the vent area to seal that off and then use the stock grate on top, so at least it looks like it works.
And I know I'm going to be using AC and that cooler II electric unit..........Gary shipped it today

Wiper Motor:
I was able to fit a wiper motor from an FJ60. I had to modify the bracket, and the wiper-motor-arm, and it (the motor) sat at a different angle then stock... but it fit fine upder the dash. I then used the section of wiring harness that has the two speed resistor (it plugs right into the wiper motor on the FJ60), and I used the delay box from an FJ60 (I had access to a complete FJ60 wiring harness). So, I ended up with two-speeds and intermittant. The intermittant was the best addition.

I haven't taken taken the wiper motor out of the 79 FJ40, but do you think that would work? I don't know much about the difference's between wiper motors.
I guess the delay and intermittant feature woud be nice, but not totally required

Well.......I saw a lot of parts when I was at your place, I suppose some of them could have been FJ60 parts
Thanks for the offer Mike, probably take you up on that. Any chance of posting a pic of the wiper motor? But, if the 79 FJ40 motor is the same thing, I have one of those and could use the one I have?
And how about answering that mystery part question, what is flat thing and where does it go? How about the filler neck, will that work, should work better than the orginal I think? Where have you been anyway, haven't seen you answering everybody's questions like you usually do? Buy more LV's I suppose
Thanks, Matt

I only bought one more...2 since you were down here
Holidays and work have me a little taxed...
I can take pics when I get home and I see no reason why that filler neck wouldn't work.

The one bracket almost looks like the one the wipers mount to. The first 2 pics are from the '64. I believe someone already borrowed the woper motor from the parts 60. Doesn't it bolt to the left hand side of the cowl?

The mystery bracket is the rear heater mount. It bolts under the front seat. My camera batteries just died. I'll post a picture in a second.

I went back an looked at your seat, and remembered you're going with buckets, you probably won't need that.
You could add an FJ60 or late model FJ40 center console, with the rear heater bulit in...or even an 80 series, cup holder, spot for your spare change, high-low blower...the possibilites are endless

Got about 7 hour in on the lv today, doesn't look like a ton of work but I did get a lot done.
Concetrated on the firewall and where the steering column goes through right away this morning. I had to weld in a piece and then fill some of the holes that were made when I drilled out the cage nuts. After everything was welded and ground it down and then put the template back on for the floor swivel that is going in. Marked that, drilled out the holes and the large hole. Still needs to be primed, but essentially is ready to go when I get the column.
Then onto the tranny hump. I had to cut the back 10" off first. Replaced some cage nuts, the cage nuts I had ordered a 100 - 6mm x 1.25 pitch several weeks ago just for this and a few other things that are coming up. I then makde paper templates and then steel of areas that were low or were a poor transition when I made the new rear portion of the tranny hump. I wanted everything to transition smoothly from one layer to the next with no little pockets for dirt and grime to get into.
I also widened the left rear side, I belive this may be required when I start doing the linkage for the 4 wheel drive lever and boot.
Plan is to get that rear tranny hump made tomorrow.
Matt
