Assembled - not yet plated
The photos are a bit misleading in that mine looks way bigger in the side shot but its not. The only dimension not the same as original is the width - the side profiles are identical. Well, the pin is larger to I guess .

one last picture
My price point for these will be $47.00 Canadian shipped in North America. When I first saw 65-fj65's early reproduction hinges at $42.00 us shipped I thought that might be a tad high but after making them I find he is right on the "money" - so to speak. Small runs of custom pieces are more expensive.
Just a note: the hinge is wider but the hole pattern is the same as original. Also - these fit the four hinge gates only.

Tailgate chains
Here is my rendition of the tailgate chains - the lower ones are new, upper is original. They still need the links at either end re-welded. I will do that tomorrow and bead blast them before plating. For those that care the chain is 1/4" grade 30 long link.

Had some fun today with my little utility trailer. New tires and repacked bearings. Then I took it about 3 miles away and weighed it at a self weigh station - 140Kg (308lbs)
Then I loaded up the new box missing only two hinges and the gate chains.

290Kg - 140Kg trailer = 150Kg (330Lbs) box
I was going to load up my original bed to see if there was any appreciable difference between them but I ran out of ambition for the day. Perhaps tomorrow .

Really nice work Kevin!
What the story on the stainless captured nuts? Special tool required to install? Come in many sizes? Better than welded nuts? What about the combination of stainless, cold rolled steel and final paint - any problems?
Thanks,
Gus

They are called PEMs and are a propriatary self clinching fastener system that come in all standard and metric sizes up to 1/2" I think - studs too. They have a groove around one side that when you press it into the material, the material cold flows into the collar and captures the nut. They are quite strong though I believe a weld nut would be stronger. In this app. once bolted up the nuts will nearly never be undone. If it was an app. where it had to be repeatedly removed I would use a weld nut. There are no issues with painting or galvanic reaction on the stainless - just spray it.

That's impressive, the 'styleside' bodies are almost a rarity over this way, I've got an urge to throw one on my 45 now.......

Marc,
Everything comes from flat 4' x 10' sheet stock and is formed one bend at a time (using a hydraulic press). No stamps here.

Marc - if you are not in too big a hurry I can get to those for you. I have a lot going on right now.
I delivered the bed to 71FJ40 yesterday in Billings MT - 1963Km round trip in 26 hours. He seemed pretty stoked when he laid eyes on it. Nice to put a face to the avatar - unfortunately we didn't have long to talk as we both wanted to hit the road and get home. Jason and his wife definitely have a severe case of Landcruiseritis - terminal I'm afraid.
Speaking of the disease - I stopped at 3_puppies place on the way home. I wish I had his stash of parts!! or half his fleet of cruisers. I did manage to pick up some new to me side steps for the 45. Almost bought a front 60 diff for the disc swap but I've got time for that yet.
Cheap digital camera shots
Day break North of Great Falls - you can just make out some fog around that homestead.

Sunrise East of Great Falls - this guy cut me of in Great Falls but once we hit the Hwy he was doing 80mph

Sunset North of Great Falls on the way home.
I left at 10pm Friday and was home at midnight Saturday - I need a nap.

Yes - an affliction I'm afraid....
A++ to Kevin - a real stand-up guy and a true cruiserhead as is reflected in the craftsmanship of the bed. Kevin went the extra mile on this bed and is ready to start importing these to the US if anyone else needs one.
x2 on meeting face to face
The bed is BEAUTIFUL - Pics coming shortly on the frame

Nice to see you posting again Peter. I was wondering where you got to.
Your rear valence must have been altered (holes filled) at some point??? Perhaps not the original tailgate It looks to me that you have some different model year parts there. Hard to tell in the photo but the tail lights look old style and too close to the ends of the panel compared to mine (1978). My lights are longer.
I made sure to set aside four hinges for you if you want them .

Programming is anywhere from 20 min to 2 hours for the flat layout depending on the complexity of the part. Then programming the brake is maybe another 30 min to an hour. There are over 40 pcs per bed (not counting lefts and rights). So thats anywhere from 34 to 120 hours... say average the two at 77 hours of programming and you haven't even made anything yet! You still have to setup the machine with the proper tooling and actually punch and bend something....
I'm not charging enough

I envy you Sir. . I seriously am going to put this thing up on my "Have-to-get-and-learn" list. . I know its serious stuff but the results are worth years of learning involved. . Way to go. Please take some VDOs of the machine in work as well.

I've been working on my truck a bit and building/ shipping solenoid covers for the 8274 (see the classified section.) I've also been working on a rear sill for the 40's and I have a local guy buying a set of the bed parts that he wants loose (not assembled). I will soon be making a run of about four beds from scratch using zinc coated material this time. One is for me, one is sold and I have a few guys who haven't put deposits down yet.
If you'd like some chains I can put together a set and send them your way. I don't have any assembled at the moment but I have the materials all handy and I will be sending some stuff off my truck for plating this week and could include a set of chains. I don't have my pricing handy as I write this but If your into it send me a PM and I'll find it.
Oh- the cover... I haven't done anything with that and truthfully I have enough on my plate for now so I'll leave that up to the purchaser for the time being.
