HJ47/HJ45/FJ45 Troopy registry
I would like to start a registry for North American-registered troopies (like Bull started for the HJ47 but open to all petrol and diesel troopies). I know of several FJ45's and HJ45's that don't technically qualify for the HJ47 registry. Please post your VIN, year, whether Right Hand Drive or Wrong Hand Drive, and which country it was imported from (don't say 'Japan' unless that was where it was registered- Jeff Z).
Once a few people have put their VINs up here, I will start compiling a list on this first post. I've started with the list from Bull's HJ47 registry.
Key: COLOUR CODE: White = Troopy, Red = Pickup, Yellow = Mid Wheel Base van. () = Country of origin in international two letter code. [] = state/province where currently registered. P/S= power steering, Air= Air Con, H55F= 5 Speed, OD= Over Drive.
Cheers,
Josh

awl-TEQ,
Originally, I thought just troopies. Now I am thinking that it could be any LWB 40 series; they are all great. I'm looking for an HJ47 pickup and I have an HJ47 troopy, so I would be happy to have it as any LWB 40 series. On the other hand, we have the FJ45 registry for the LVs, so perhaps this should be just troopies... Ideas?
Cheers,
Josh

I don't mean to sound like a goober..but where exactly is the vin tag? I gave a quick glance on the firewall, inner fenders , under the dash and in the door jams and didnt find anything.

Well this is your thread . I've got a long bed truck which isn't really an LV or a troopie . Maybe we need one list with three categories. I think fracturing everyone into three (or even more) lists sort of takes the spirit out of it. Somebody will always feel left out.

G'day Fluffybunny,
Look on the right, front frame horn, just behind the brace that holds the bumper. It will be on the outside, verticle space about 1" aft of that brace in the centre of the rail. On yours, you will likely have to brush off 17 years of dust to see it, but it is likely in perfect condition
Cheers,
Josh

Good idea Kevin- let's do it for the LP and RP as well. That way the LV has its place, and we can put together something for the other long wheelbase 40 series. I will label them separately for now, and if enough register, I will create a different field. That way we have a registry for both, so if someone wants to start a pickup registry later on, maybe there will be a good start here. Thanks.
Cheers,
Josh

fluffy - mine was at the left upper corner of the firewall (engine side) as you look at the front of the vehicle.
Patc...er...HJ47 how about a list of anything thats not an FJ/BJ40. And then break it into sub categories of LV, Troopie, LWB or is that what you meant by any long frame? Does one include short box trucks? - they are pretty rare - how many could there be?

FJ45Kev...er, Awl_TEQ ,
I can't imagine there are too many short box pickups running around, but I am happy to put them under 'pickup.' Similarly, I am happy to put BJ44's and FJ43's in there as 'Troopy'. I suppose that if the list grows to any size, I will have to re-think the indexing, but for now I reckon that a Troopy/Pickup division will be sufficient. I will DEFINITELY limit it to North America, though (Sorry Australia/Europe).
Anyone feel left out?
Cheers,
Josh

Troopie,
Thank you for your information. I would love to put a BJ45 on. Unfortunately, I am going to keep it to Cruisers in North America. If I do the entire planet, I may crash the system with all of the VINs. Not to mention, I would have to quit my job in order to have the time to do it and my wife would leave me.... so I'm sure you understand.
What you could do, in order to have your VIN on here is to send your rig to someone in the US who would love and cherish it forever.... Just putting it out there.
Cheers,
Josh

Well, if someone offers me a fair price it might end up over there....
I understand that you want only the North American troopies, no problem.

Sorry malcb. I'm simply trying to get a handle on how many troopies and pickups have made it to North America, given they were not widely available there. The pickups were, while not plentiful, available to buyers in the UK and therefore not generally imported from abroad.
The other purpose of this registry is to follow what happens to these vehicles once they are in North America. This can be interesting to future owners (much like looking at the registration numbers in England will tell you when the vehicle was registered and in what region), because registration here changes in each state the vehicle goes to, unlike the UK. Therefore, there is no easy way to follow a vehicle's history as there is in the UK because the VIN is not easily seen from photos, etc.
So you can see, registering vehicles from outside North America does not serve either of the purposes of this registry. However, as I said to Troopie, sending them to a loving home in North America will ensure that they are permanently enshrined in Mud records.
Cheers,
Josh

privacy concerns?
That's great, thanks OrangeFJ45.
It just occurred to me that some people might be concerned about having their VIN out there with their user name (I don't see why this could be a problem, as anyone can get the VIN off the internet with just the registration number; but it occurred to me nonetheless). If this is a problem for anyone, you can PM me your VIN, and I will put just the VIN up as 'anonymous,' with the RHD/LHD and country of original registration.
As for listing other people's troopies, that would be great too; it does not have to be a Mud member. If anyone sees a troopy at a Cruiser meeting, shop, Ebay etc., get the VIN and I'll post it up here. All I ask is that you check that it is not listed before posting to save me having to do it.
Cheers,
Josh

No problem - pity the other registries don't have a few more fields, then the whole thing would get much more interesting, axle ratios, first date registered, first country registered, 2nd country registered, second date registered, original engine serial, replacement engine serial, miles/KM, number of owners, current condition etc.. wouldn't matter if most fields were blank.
Anyway although not know for certain it seems that Toyota only brought in and sold something like 1200 FJ45 pickups in the UK around 1974-1976, nothing before of after, no diesels ever and no FJ40's ever! They started trying to sell the FJ55 in the (1978?) but it was just oil went balistic and they sold none or very few.
Land Rover must have scared them off, but Toyota didn't even try that hard with the 60 series, things are different now but they still don't push the work side, just the armchairs.

as a troopy elitist i fully support this thread .
but, if you look just below my av you will see that i am not in NA. i liked my first troopy (RHD from OZ) sooooo much, that i brought it back to canada. i loved australia sooooo much, that i had to move there. so the current vin you have posted is for the troopy that i currently own (RHD in OZ). my "canadian" troopy has returned to the center of the toyota universe (i sold it to someone in japan). so that's out too.
i don't feel left out , i drive my cruiser (i have a couple, have had a few) every day. that's all that matters.

malcb,
I agree with you about having more info, and that is where the boys at Solihull have got it really sorted out. I have a mate here in Australia who is a Land Rover fan, and he has all of that information on his rig- which he obtained from Solihull.
When I was in Scottland, I saw two FJ55's, and was amazed. One was a bit rusty, but the other was really clean. I did not realise that the FJ45 had such a limited availability in the UK- nor that it was available as petrol only.
It is sad, really. I sometimes wonder why Toyota is so timid in their marketing (re Land Rover in the UK, and J*ep in the US)- it is almost as if they have succeeded despite themselves. If it were not for Theis and the Snowy River Scheme in Australia, Land Cruiser would likely not have taken off here either.
Crusty- thanks, your rig is off the list. Glad you like Australia. There are some nice things about it. When you get tired of your HJ47, be sure to send it up north
Cheers,
Josh

Crusty,
Abuse? That looks like heaven to me! I really miss snow, and the more summers I spend here sweating it out in 45 degree heatwaves, the more I think baking my Cruiser in the Ozone-less sun is abuse. I reckon the winters here make the perfect summers.
Where in Oz are you?
Cheers,
Josh

On the other hand, we have the FJ45 registry for the LVs, so perhaps this should be just troopies... Ideas?
