1983 FJ45 Troop Carrier Buildup!

Recently, much to the dismay of my wife...I fell for a 25 year old Australian gal....

1983 Toyota FJ45RV Troop Carrier Land Cruiser (build date 9/82)
2F Petrol Motor, converted to also run LPG
H41 Four Speed with 4.99:1 First gear
Fairey Overdrive

She arrived at the Port of Long Beach on a ship from Brisbane in August. 312K kilometers on the clock, and in really good condition for her age. Runs great and shifts smoothly.

The build up will begin shortly after a title company is done doing the importation and title stuff...

Suspension/Tires
Drivetrain
Interior Seating/Cage/Storage/Water etc.

Here she is....a beauty....

If only my FJ40 in high school had this much room in the bed..... ops:

throw in a couple rows of the IPOR bench seats in the back. It'll look real nice.

I was looking at the quatratec site the other day and found some nice heated seats...as well as a split/fold/tumble bench that I'm thinking will work nicely...plus, I can get 'em in cloth..

Love the Troopy H.. Congrats on the purchase.

On the Q-Tech seats.. Bestop i assume? In my researching replacement seats for my son's rig i'v read where a considerable amount who have purchased those complain of a bar that runs horizontal at the base of the spine.

I read where alot of guys like the WJ Grand Cherokee Heated seats from 99-04 are very comfortable.. and reasonable.

Thanks for the heads up on the seats! I may go with factory 80 series cloth, and add the heating elements from Sr. Slee....

Here we go with questions....

1. I can't figure out if there are lift springs on it or not...front pack is 7 springs and rear is 8...slight arch on the front, very good arch on the rear with Dick Cepek shocks....barely (within 1") clears my 7' garage door.....

Anyone have rocker panel measurements for a stock 45Troopy?

If its currently stock, I've gotta keep it that way to clear the garage, if lift springs....I'll likely just order a new OME setup, as the ride is pretty harsh, and I'll only be carrying about 1000 lbs of gear fully loaded, with a swing away tire carrier, water tanks, etc....

Here's a side view, tires are 7.50x16 (31"):

So...I guess that answers my question....I'm at 83" with 31s and the springs that are on there.....they're not stock, giving about 4" of lift....

I'd actually use an OME kit as a "lowering kit"....

Thanks Bull!

True. Judging from the advertising on the side they put overload springs on that bad boy. So when empty you are up that high..

How are the bumps? Are they kidney killers?

On road it's jarring....

On a dirt road, it's undrivable....just hits any washboard and wants to rattle apart and head sideways....

I should have known that when I first saw it it had a 3B motor and trans in the back and didn't sag much....

worst case scenario you can take a leaf out and see how she drives. Hell you could probably take 2 out of the middle and be ok.

no way does that have 4inches of lift in it. If anything it looks pretty close to stock to me. Altho feel free to prove me wrong

mine at stock and 31's

And troopies, atleast here, came out of the factory with the equivelant of 32.6' tyres. That pic doesnt show it to well but 31's look a bit small. 33's match the truck's size.

From the ground, passing through the centerline of the hub, and measured at the middle fender cut, is 39", the front fender, also measured through the centerline of the hub, is 37"....rocker panel/step is 22"...

I can post pics if necessary...

Just so we're clear....The spring packs seem to have much too much arch to be stock...but this is my first 45...otherwise I've had 40s...

The spring packs in the rear:

And the measurement to the rear fender:

And the measurement to the front fender:

looks lifted to me. Mine arrive Sunday so I can't measure yet, but the stock one definitely isn't that tall.

Any measurements from stock troopys would be definitely appreciated!

Gracias!

And an update on mods....

A DUI Distributor has been sourced from another mudder....away goes the external ballast resistor etc....

A stock FJ40 roll bar and FJ60 steel wheels are coming up from other mudders in Phoenix this weekend!

Still making decisions on the springs....

Wil and Wendy at www.Sierraexpeditions.com just came through with a great deal on the seats!! Thanks guys!!!

For the Front.... Bestop Trailmax Pro Thermal (yup...heated!) in cloth...
For the Rear.... Bestop Trailmax Pro fold & tumble (so I can make an extendable sleeping platform from the rear roller drawers!)

I'll post some pics when I get the stuff!!

Seats!

Seats came in last week, and I had a bit of time to get 'em mounted this weekend! Thanks again to Sierra Expeditions for sourcing the seats!

Had to make a passenger side bracket, since the seats are about 1.5" more narrow than the stock Toyota seats, but otherwise the install went very smoothly. Seat sliders mounted right up to the mounting holes in the Bestop seats!

Busy Sunday!!

Finally had the opportunity to start installing some of the stuff I've received!

Spidertrax 1.5" bolt on spacers helped to give plenty of clearance for the wheels....These things are nice! (Sorry about photo quality...it was 26 degrees and snowing all weekend!)

Tires are 295/75/R16 BFG All Terrains on American Racing Mohave Teflon Wheels....From ExpeditionsWest's Tacoma...Deal I couldn't refuse....

....and then started to remove the rest of the old advertising...

I could tell every time the phone numbers changed....

....And I can still fit into the garage...and out again, with the new rubber!!!

Those wheels look gay (NTTAWWT) on there. They belong on an 80
