Manuals, Factory Lit, etc.

A link to Morgan Fletcher's Literature: Land Cruisers in Print

The quote from me is wrong in the 1959 section, because later I learned the '59 did indeed have the thunderbird emblem, not the oval emblem.

Everything you never needed to know about FJ25's and the first FJ40's including the first recall on the Land Cruiser:

IIRC James Asti has a healthy collection of early literature including a leather bound 25 manual.

In case you were wondering how to operate that complicated FJ25:

Hey, Jim. Check out the posted factory lit on the '59 FJ-25. There's no apron-mounted air intake on those either. Wonder if the difference is between the Japanese domestic models and the US imported ones. The mystery continues . . . .

Almost twice the horsepower at no extra cost!

Dealer supplied checklist for the buyer to compare the FJ25 and CJ5. So locking gas caps were standard?

Hey Jim.

I think I just figured out why there's no visible apron mounted air instakes on these photos. They're right-hand drives, so they must be on the other side.

Apparently I do have a non-stock drivers side apron on mine.

Steve

Sleepy here today...

Another: FJ25 vs. CJ5 Comparison

I wonder what the three tailgate choices were?

Drop style, swing out and none? (I obviously paid extra for that last option.)

Geez, kinda quiet around here lately. There's got to be something going on other than just my new frustrating brake problems.

I think fixed gate (not NO-gate) was the third, but don't know.

Check the 1959 in Morgan Fletcher's link. Seating- standard type bench seat fixed gate, type B bench seat drop gate, type C jump seats with two side gates, type D jump seats with drop gate.

Winter's Coming!

Time to hang that period accessory on the front of your 25 and go play in the salt!

My dealer parts guy offered to let me scan all his early books on a sunday when closed... I think treeroot said he'd host since the early stuff have 45lv info in there to. So if all goes well it'll be on root45.com in the future...

Sounds like you have a good parts guy (does he ship?).

I've got the orange & red 25 parts book (7/63) and scanned the 1958 one. Leave yourself a ton of time, it takes a lot longer than you think. Also the pages are nearly transparent and difficult to get a good scan.

I dunno if they ship.. I can if needed. Since Denver has quite a bit of cruisers.. they know what they are and often have things like bumperettes in stock

Do you have them online or just on your comp? I'm sure Tree would probably put them on his site if your inclined... it's save me the scanning

I've got the 58 parts book on my comp. I didn't scan it, as it was in real good shape so I didn't want to flatten it out. Shot it high-res spycam style. Perfectly legible, but not a flatbed scan. The 7/63 FJ25 book I started to scan and that's when I discovered what a PITA it is......never finished. But yeah, I could just forward a CD to Treeroot.

From the deepest darkest depths of the stash.....

Press Photo dated 4/3/59 with the following release attached:

Japanese Land Cruiser Proves "Irresistible Force"

A shakedown cruise by one of America's leading sports car editors resulted in "unqualified endorsement" for Toyota Motor Company's sturdy 6-cylinder "Land Cruiser." The 4-wheel drive juggernaut, using regular tires, passed exacting tests on steep grades, deep ruts, and high-crown mountain roads in back country areas. The rugged valve-in-head power plant has a 90" wheelbase, overall length of 151", and ground clearance of 8 inches. Seating, which can accommodate 7 to 9 passengers, will lay flat to permit cargo hauling and the rear tailgate drops flat to facilitate easy loading.

Where the heck do you find this stuff, Jim? That write-up and pics are just too cool!!

I love the part about seating for up to 9 passengers. We were barely able to squeeze just you and me in mine the other day.
