windshield frame
Well I did a little tinkering today. I decided to wire wheel part of my w/s frame to get a better look at a dent and potential rust spots. I was impressed with how solid the frame is. I have a dent on the inside that I need to pull but I think it will be easy enough to do. I don't have a stud welder and I don't want to buy one for this small dent. Thinking I might drill a hole, insert a sheet metal screw then either heat the area with a torch and pry the dent out or get a slide hammer and pull it out without heat.

Then I need to figure out how to "flatten out the frame" a little. Hopefully when I pull the dent some of the gap in the photo below wil disappear. I can alwasy hope can't I.
I wonder how the PO got this dent anyway. He must have laid it into a tree or something real soft right at the windshield hinges. There is Zero bondo in the area but when I got the rig the front door did not fit at all. I couldn't detect anything by just looking so I got out a plunb bob and a square and found the A pillar was pushed in about 1/4". With a come-along, high-lift jack, a railroad tie and an Oak Tree it's like new again. But I still have to fix the frame.

The reason it bent there is because that's the top of the hinge and the start of the narrow spot. Weakest spot bents first. If the top of the windshield gets pushed back there is where it's going to bend first. I've seen it happen before. Not as easy to so with hard top installed.
Your doing a good job Rod keep up the good work.

Thanks for the reply. It makes sense. My project is going slow but it's as fast as the ol' artharitis lets me. Wernching aint so bad I tore it completely down in a weekend. It's the sanding, gringing, pounding that takes it's toll. It will be worth it though. And I will have many many questions for the pros here on MUD as I get further along.

More Windshield Frame
Hi all, Well I worked on the windshield frame again today. I think it went really well for a man of my talents! I pulled on the dent and got it to look pretty good. Still a little left to be done but I had a question before I go any further. First pic is of the dent after pulling it. I made a couple of pieces of steel to kind of fit the shape of the dented area . I drilled a hole in them and welded a nut to the back side. Then a drilled a matching hole in the dent. Inserted it into the W/S frame attached the bolt then whacked it with a slide hammer. Took a piece of brass attached it to a pry bar and held it up inside the frame and proceded to fill my hole with a wire feed welder.
So before I finish this side of the frame I need to know Is the crease in the next photo factory. It kind of looks like it is but I want to be sure.
Then how about these holes. The one in the center looks like it was factory drilled but the other 2 look PO to me. Both vents look the same.
Oh ya I almost forgot "I had fun today"... Rod

Pyramid Vinyl
Well I got my Pyramid Vinyl Monday so I thought I would add a pic or 2 to the thread. My next free time will be spent making a template to cut the vinyl so it fits correctly. Also I need to research the correct layout of the pattern. I think it's straight on the outer edge but i'm not positive.

a closer look
I got a square yard and it cost me 36 or 38 $ I don't remember but that included shipping.
Still looking for some feed back on the holes by my windshield frame vents in the last photo in the previous post.
It might be a while before I get the vinyl cut but when I do I'll post it.

Pyramids are square to the outside edge. So you need to cut your material at an angle. I had a post or thread about it here somewhere.....

pyramids
I searched but didn't find much. I did find a decent photo that i shamelessly stole from 3jvj. The matt looks to have been installed the way I was thinking. I made my template today since it was raining. I may cut them out tomorrow. I think this is what you were describing Cruiser_Nerd. am I correct?

Hey...very cool! Did you buy the roll from that place in NY?
That is a lot of material! How many you figure you can get of it? I was thinking of buying 24" x yard, and I figured I'd have more than enough for a couple of sets, as I only need two...maybe three sets...always nice to have spares
Oh, and I believe that you are correct in the orientation of the pyramids, as this is how they were on my old short runners I got from John last year.

Ya I got it from Canal rubber. I ordered it quite a while ago. They said they were out but it had been re-ordered already and they would ship it ASAP. I actually thought that they had lost my little order and ws going to call them again when it showed up.
Not sure how many I'll get from it. I'll post up something later. The sun is shining so that means I have lawns and gutters to do first. While I'm doing that I'm sure the list will grow if you know what I mean.

Rod,
Yep, what you have pictured is correct. Here's a thread from when I did it:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj25-owners-...skid-step.html
You have to cut on a 45* angle, so you get a lot less out of the raw material than you could otherwise.

Thanks for the link. It's nice to go where those have gone before. I make a lot less mistakes that way. I had just came in the house from laying out my caps on the mat to see just how many I would get. I didn't cut them only because I need a good straight edge. I then read your last post and decided that I need to go do it again, this time making sure my mind doesn't wander into la la land. Well as you stated there will be a lot of waste. Thanks again for making life easier.

Running Board eye candy
Well it's time for a small update. I cut some of the matt for the running boards and fitted them. One side turned out good and the other is off 1/2 pyramid from end to end. I'll use that as my daily driver and replace it with a correct cut if I meet someone I want to impress.

I've also completed the filling of some of the holes in the windshield frame. It went from this
to this
Hopefully the rest of the holes will come out as well as these did. I sure like the idea of them being filled with steel vs. some form of bondo.

Thanks Destin, I know the fasteners are not OE. I used them because they were easy to get my hands on and I wanted to check the fit. The correct Phillips head screws are in a bucket somewhere.

Now I understand why you needed so much mat...you have the long boards.
Looking good...and that frame looks like it never had those holes
