air filters for a 1964 fj40

Heya all

What are you guys using in the way of air filters for your older fj?
Mine has old metal meshing rolled conically for the filter.
I imagine i can just clean this and re-roll it.

What do you guys use in the way of replacement filters?
Would a newer insert filter make a huge difference in the way it runs over the tight mesh metal filter?

Cheers!

Destin

ah weird

There is no oil in it now...
( the PO updated the oil filter to a newer type.. )
So the air filter container is supposed to contain oil?
I am not doubting you it just sounds weird

back then you could get the oil bath or a paper style. If it has the silver mesh it's the oil bath..

do you have pics?

pretty straight up.....older vehicles had oil bath filters before paper filters became the norm....
They're more efficient at removing particles of all sizes as paper elements remove particles down to a certain size....

Clean the wire mesh in kerosene, fill the oil bath to the level indicator and roll on......just don't roll over and spill the oil.....

I have been slowly taking bits off and cleaning them

Things this was sitting forever so it is a bit dirty.
I was going to pull off a bunch of black parts next weekend and blast and repaint them black and reinstall.
Need to take apart the front clip and degrease and clean anyway.

So how much oil would i put in there?
Would actually _having_ oil in their help it run better?

hehe

I don't know if it'll run better but it'll filter the air like its supposed to....

My opinion is that the oil bath is far better than paper....It does need oil in it though....

The dirt inside the air filter cant follow the flow of air and falls trapped in the oil.....

Labyrinth principle at work....

Look inside it tomorrow and try to find a level indicator line....Should be about a 1/2 quart....Change it when you change your engine oil.....

Its lackluster.....clean..but has orange paint on the valve cover and side plate where the PO had the engine rebuilt (?).....

They used a spray can of undercoating and sprayed the firewall .....Its not the prettiest site......Its a work in progress still undoing their love......
