Here's a piece of US Toyota history:

eBay Motors: Toyota : Toyopet Crown (item 330245825611 end time Jun-29-08 18:08:43 PDT)

Someone save the pics?

Winning bid: US $22,322.00

From a post on an email list:
Michael wrote:

> Well, the auction ended today at a whopping $22,322! Needless to say

The Toyopet's new owner may live in the Midwest since his bid
history indicates last month he won an auction for
a 2007 Camry Hybrid located in Tennesee. But then
the buyer could have simply flown to Tennesee and drove
the car home to Seattle or whereever. Anyway, we know
the buyer likely wasn't a Toyota dealer or Toyota employee.

I would have thought that a west coast dealer would jump at
the opportunity to have a '58 Toyopet on permanent display
at his / her dealership since the '58 model is the rarest and
has such a colorful, albiet embarrassing, history (Toyota
executives were almost stranded trying to drive the
car from Los Angeles to San Francisco since it could not
be driven above 45-50 MPH without overheating). And
I read that when the decision was made to return 200
unsold California Toyopet's back to Japan Toyota's Chairman
Taizo Ishida was so dissappointed he yelled: "Throw them
into the Pacific."

Hello everyone.
Nice thread Johnny! I'm glad to see there is a place with people interested in Toyota history!

I don't want to stray off topic, but bear with me for my following ramble...

Quick background - Even though I'm new here, I've been part of the Toyota scene for a number of years. I'm a member of the Toyota Owners and Restorers Club (TORC), and I hang out at Japanese Nostalgic Car and Old Japanese Car. I've also got my own website, toyotageek.com and manage a couple of Groups - Classic Toyota Town, 2000GT and Toyopet Crown. I've known about IH8MUD for some time, but never joined since I wasn't really a Cruiser guy - silly me! The funny thing is I kept coming back because everytime I searched for some obscure old Toyota info, Google pointed me here. When I found this thread I decided to finally join.

My main interest in Toyota is primarily pre-1970's vehicles, Toyota history, and collecting Toyotamobilia. Those are the reasons I started my own website as well as the Groups I manage.

To the point - Johnny, in your first post you mentioned you received 100 pages of corporate data that you were translating. Mind if I ask, what exactly was that data & where did you get it? (Do you think I could get a copy of this data from you?) What you have done here with this thread is something I was eventually planning to do on my own site - I plan on having several pages dedicated to Toyota history and include some timelines/charts. I would love to to use some (most) of the data that you have compiled - would you mind sharing the info you have posted? If you're open to the idea, let me know and we can talk more about it.

Now, I'll let this thread get back on topic, and I promise to check out more postings and provide input whenever possible!

The proble I believ is that all this is going in the 25 section...this is a slow moving group

The stuff here was a document that I received from a Toyota jp. employee many years ago...I dont even know if he was really suposed to just give it out ....but I got it

I have been putting it together with other known facts and translating as not to get into copyright problems.

Feel free to use any information on here ...this is why I put it all here so people can use it and learn from it.

Shoot me a PM with you email....we'll discuss further.

also check out the WIKI ih8mud...i have just started working on the old ak10 information...and will be building upon it more and more with all my crap

JohnnyC
Hello Jim & Johnny and thank you for the welcome to IH8MUD.

I sort of know Jim since he joined my Classic Toyota Town a number of years ago. I'm happy to be a part of the group here and I'll try to help out, and provide info or pix whenever I can.

Johnny, thanks for giving me the ok to use the data you have translated. I wouldn't call this corner of IH8MUD slow moving, but it is kind of "out of the way" for your general Toyota enthusiast.

It's funny how I stumbled upon this thread, as I was Googling "Toyopet Route Truck" to find out about a diecast model I was researching... ...but that's another story.

~mike
