I have a FJ and think it has great off-road ablility in stock form and will be even better with a few normal mods, lift, tires, etc. I am also in the process of buying an 80, I am very impressed with the 80's performance. Main difference for me is that the 80 will be used for long road trips when I am carrying a ton of crap. Both are great rigs, IMHO.

Depends on what you want. If you need a family 4wd, then the wagon (80) might be better for you. For 4 wheeling in tighter quarters, the FJ would be best.
Despite what the poster above said about an "off road" package, well there really isn't much that they could do unless it's provide you with a lift and mud tires. The whole "Solid axle" thing is really not an issue. I've been wheeling with both solid axle and IFS 4wd for years and had no complaints on either, nor could I tell much of a difference. Good luck on whatever your decision, but they are BOTH solid machines. After all they are both Land Cruisers.

Just sold my 80...waiting a few months until the hype is over to get an FJ...
For the type of wheeling I do (travel/expedition) the FJ will fit the bill exactly. -H- __________________ 2003 BMW R1150GS Adventure 1983 FJ45 Troopy KE7TYL ...and then there is always Mexico.... |

If I had 25-30k to drop on an FJ, I think I would take about half that amount, build up the 80 and buy a built 40(or build a 40).
At that point you would really have the best of both worlds, and money in your pocket. |

Good point, keep the 80 and invest in its maintenance. Wait about ten years which is how long your 80 will probably last you and buy a used FJ for a fraction of the price. This way you get the best of both worlds. __________________ Victor 08 FJ TT edition 71 fj40 project rig |

I don't know how serious you are about offroad-ability, but if it's just light wheeling, both trucks will perform the same. You have more options to go farther though with the 80 as far as offroad performance vs. $ for modifications though. I'd keep the 80, keep it running for a few more years (not hard to do) and then go from there.

For us it was easy.
Our 92 FJ80 "Tubbs" though very dependable was one of the "bad" years. (Flame suit on) Underpowered gas guzzling 3Fe with no factory lockers. Our new FJ Cruiser has a manual 6-speed tranny , rear locker and now thanks to a $50 switch Toyota A-Trac. Also I am getting 18-19 mpg compared to the 80s 13-14 mpg Still have a 40 also Bob |

I've driven a few FJ's since they have come out. They seem cool and i kinda like them.
They do have some things i wish the 80 had but if i was in the market for a new car i just cannot shake the fact that for about $15,000(half the fj cost) you could build a fairly bad 80 that is so much more capable and has just as much power as an FJ. ok, rant over. |

Thanks for all the info ... Will proibly keep the 80 series ... it's 96 lx with pretty low miles ...I just have way to many trucks on the road .
I can only drive on at a time and I don't have enough open space's close to me to justify building trailer queen . Some said something about a FJ with lockers is coming out this summer ....? Thanks Greg |

I dunno what you just said, but don't go with a LSD in the front, go with the ARB in the front because they're available bro....

I allways never bought the first year of any new model of any machine's .
I will keep my 80 ...it is great machine , I do like the solid axle with the lockers . I can see my self in a new land cruiser ...I just don't feel you get your moneys worth with buying new these days ... I bought new american for so many years and just switched to the Toyota side a year or so back ...and love it , I will never go back . The new FJ caught my eye and if it performs as well as the 80 series I will be very happy . I wish they would do one with a diesel . Thanks guys . Greg |
