manual trans / FT 4x4 - unlocked low range ????

edited

having played around with unlocked low in my 80, I was wondering if anyone has looked into how to unlock the low range of a manual trans/full time FJC.

possibly a dash switch for locked/unlocked & makeing the xfer case selector do hi/low range only?

is there a plug on the top of the transfer case that senses shifter position & controls the CDL servo (that can be unplugged like on the 80)?

because it is a manual trans the "pin7" stuff (intended to fix the FZJ80 auto trans shift points) wouldnt apply - right?

just a couple afterthoughts

on the 80 toyota conveniently had the wiring harness run the lines for the transfer case lock/unlock signal right up to the dash - pull the plug on the xfer case and plug a switch in on the dash and you could control lock/unlock in high /low (but the shift points got messed up unless you did some more tinkering)

I have no idea what the FJ wiring harness is like as I dont have one.... but for now lets assume that there is no CDL wires on the wiring harness running up to the dash

I also dont know how the FJ transfer case knows to lock up / unlock...... and how that locking unlocking actually happens

if the lockup is electric (I suspect it is) then you should be able to interrupt that signal (pull the plug off the tranfer case?)

if pulling that plug (that I am assuming is there) defeats the CDL in low, then the rest could be as simple as cutting one wire going to that plug, and running wires to / from a (dash mounted? center console mounted?) switch....

BTT

even though it will be a long time before I end up owning an FJ, the curiosity is killing me

does the FJ transfer case have an electric actuator like on the 80's & 100's?
(thus making unlocked low is as simple as interrupting the signal to the CDL)

I promise I will not post in this thread (or ask about unlocked low) ever again.
