Garmin GPS dealer installed ??

Does anyone know if the Garmin GPS unit for the dash is a dealer installed option or if it just clips in to a built in bracket? Does it hook up into the wiring harness or an external antennae? I'm interested in getting one but the dealership doesn't seem to have much information for me on it.

Thanks,
Shawn

I asked this at the dealership, and they were totally ignorant of the GPS unit as an option wven though it is in their own brochure. I am hoping that it is something that can be added aftermarket. The same Garmin unit can be purchased from numerous sites, the only question is if it will install same as is brochure.

My solution

I have the Garmin 2720 mounted on a non-skid portable (bean bag mount)
It works Great, Looks very cool, and just sits on the front with zero movement.
I just came back from a road trip to Vegas and did some pretty good wheelin in the Red Rocks near Flagstaff and the GPS didn't move an inch.

for example pictures see the ebay items numbers below:

GPS similar to the FJC marketing version with non-skid mount:
EBAY Item #: 9711060962

I would personally use the Garmin 2620 (cheaper and new from last year)
with the non-skid bean bag mount.

Good Luck
Mike

Looks like I might have answered my own question....

The 2007 FJ Cruiser Product Reference Guide (page 19) states:
"FJ Cruiser drivers will appreciate the added convenience of a push button glove box located above the instrument panel. The interior has been pre-wired to accept the portable Garmin Quest 2 GPS navigation system with docking station - available as an accessory that replaces the driver glove box."

I guess that answers most of the questions I had.

Thanks,
Shawn

I bought a Garmin Street Pilot with a suction mount that uses the flat surface on the instrument panel just to the left of the steering column. Ideal location and does not interfer with visibility.

I can't seem to find the option connector for the GPS in the pre-wire using the wiring diagrams or fishing around the wiring looms. I am currently using Option Conn. R-1 to power my GPS, but this connection powers on IGN not ACC which is a little frustrating. I realize I could power from another source, but would like to find this connector if it exists. Has anyone found it???

Quest 2 not ready for FJ

I ordered the Garmin Quest 2 that was supposed to have the charger mount that mounted in the dash directly in front of the driver.
When my TRD SE delivered earlier this month, I was informed that the charger mount, that would allow the unit to rest directly in front of the driver, was not in production as of yet from Toyota/Garmin.
When and if it becomes available, they will forward along in due course, until then they provide you with suction cup mounts for the windshield- which promptly fell off before I left the Toyota Store lot.
In addition, if it would stick for good, the windshield is atleast another foot away from the proposed mount positon in the glove box directly in the drivers line of sight. Not good for my old eyes!
Long story short, I returned it to the dealer, indicating that it was not what they represented in the brochure.
They want to charge me a restocking fee and allow me to get another Garmin product in exchange.
We are not in agreement over this, so more to follow....gm

Without the 'charger mount', how did you power the GPS?

Thanks,
Mark

Plug in in the dash on a cord

The charger is on a cord that plugs into the dash.
The charge mount would be the same but the proper mounting bracket would allow it to fit in the pop up glove box rather than stick on the windshield.
Since it is not available I am going to get a NUVEE 660 from garmin in lieu of the Quest 2......gm

I simply mounted the adhesive backed disc that came with my Garmin to the left of the tri-faced gauge on the dash top. I've had no problems wit the suction cup mount coming loose in hot Cali weather/sun, or under VERY rough off roading. It's CA legal (not on windshield) and I am currently working out an "Add a Circuit" connection to hard wire the charger cable into the FJ, eliminating the use of the dash front accessory plug. Leaving available for the additional lap-top based GPS for plotting, journaling on long trips and the wifes plug in coffee cup (ok, kidding about tha one).
anyone here hard wired yet? suggestions?

I put in a Kenwood dnx7100, It fits in your existing CD player space perfect, you can cut off the

front of the old player and use it as a cover to hide your highend unit. It has Garmin GPS, CD player

DVD player, I-POD cotrols, USB hook-up, Input for Back-up Camera. Their are several varations of

this on the market (brand and price range).

A dealer sent me the installation guide for the factory Garmin GPS and mount. It shows how to wire it in and how to remove the center console so that you can hide the wires. If anyone wants it let me know eloodo (AT) Cableone (dot) net.

This is the same unit I am about to install. I like the fact that the I pod charges and can run video through the head unit. Fit kit should be here today, and can't wait to get it in.
