Yeah, that will be the affordable under $20k version. I think the 4x4 version will start at least $25K.

As there has been a 2wd pickup, 2wd 4 runner and 2wd Landcruisers have existed in the past.

What is the big deal..

It also said they're more likely to produce a hybrid version than a diesel version.

I was sad to hear about the 2WD but if that's what it takes for them to be able to work out the sales numbers and make it....

I don't think the 2wd will hurt anything. The 2wd 4Runners I've seen are actually really nice. Not for 4wheeling ofcourse, but who goes 4wheeling, maybe 1% of the population. So the rest might buy it instead of a Camry, or Sienna or something, heck, even a 2wd 4Runners is a sharp looking vehicle, and when you compare it to a car (not a 4x4), it's actually pretty cool.

I was thinking if you could buy a stripped down 2wd version and then do the solid-axle-swap in the front, you'd have alot less to get rid of up there, but you'd have to throw some stuff into the drivetrain (but heck, if you're throwing in some Marlin box or something anyway, might be worth it).

I dont know about the drivetrain issues, But it would be a good start to a SAS...Lower cost of entry, You would need a T-case, I would be interested to see what it would take to do such a thing, ie. what trans does it come with? The like.
We will see.

Toyota knows marketing. The local dealer has a big ad in the paper. You can lease a Tundra regular cab, V-6 2WD for $139 a month. Right next to it is a picture of a 4X4 V-8 for $169 a month. How many 2WDs do you think they are selling with that ad? They get people in with the low price, then walk them into the next one. They will advertise the 2WD, manual, 4 cyl FJ at under $20K and sell people the good stuff.

Question:

If the V6 is the 4Skinner V6 and the 4Skinner uses the smae tranny as the 80/100 series (or some related incarnation thereof) could I pull a latter-model tcase off an 80 (or 100) for this?

I will Deffinatly be intrested in a 2wd Version.. Hell if its 5k less, that leaves you plenty of Cash for E-lockers front/rear, Marlin Crawler T-cases, and SAS of course.. for 5 k i could do it all "Right" and have the truck i want for less than the 4wd version cost..

2WD = parts cars. The more of these on the road, the better!

Think of all the engines, rear axles, body panels, etc.

Let me dig around I know a have a few photos of blown rear drive shafts. Nothing like heading back to the trailer under birfield power, 4x2 baby!

I have to agree on the 4x2 option. Let a few of them get out on the road = parts. Two years in, 4x2 lower value = trany swap and a set of 97’ 80 or LX axels with lockers.
