Top speed in 4wd-hi?

Had my FJ For a year now...always followed the manual (top 55). However it seems people are going up to 80 in 4-hi...even the Voodoo Blue A\T was doing 4wd-hi up to 100 mph on the baja race...what's the deal? Can we or can we not go up to those speeds? If not, why?

i believe the little paper insert on visor over drivers seat says 50mph/80kmh is limit in Hi-4 for automatic disconnecting differential (ADD).. was reading it today at SONIC while waiting on lunch.

honestly though...I do not think any of my other previous vehicles ever had a limit as most said you could switch into Hi4 at any safe driving speed. Not sure why it would make a difference...other than a Liability Lawyer input to keep someone from thinking they are in Baja500 and losing control when they go airborne and then land with wheels turned and wonder why their vehicle is all over the place...LOL

Switching in wasn't my question, I meant like...top speed in 4-hi. Toyota seems to say that the TOP speed you can go in 4-hi is 55?

yeah but reasons to believe if you can switch into it at any speed...then driving in it would not be a problem either.

not sure why the limit for toyota on driving speeds....still guessing it is a liability issue they are trying to prevent so people dont drive in snow on highway at 70mph and then blame Toyota because they ate a guardrail....just my guess.

I thought the limit of 55 mph was only for shifting in or shifting out, not the max speed you can drive in 4Hi. Perhaps I am wrong.

I go faster than 55 off road in 4 hi all the time. No problems. I don't remember seeing anything about a limit for shifting or driving in my manual.

read the note stuck in the sleeve on your sunvisor over drivers side......it is not clear if only for shifting into or out of Hi-4 or while operating in Hi-4...could go either way.

I once owned a 1995 Ford F150 automatic that said 50 mph was the limit when engaged in 4HI.

according to the owners manual max speed for 4high is 109 mph in fith gear.

yep re read again the notice on sun visor....

50mph limit is for using automatic differential disconnect/connect from 2H to 4H... if it is having trouble going into 4H then slow down to try again...or if in cold weather reduce speed and try again.

also goes on to say must not drive with LOCKER on over 5mph......and to ONLY use LOCKER to escape from muddy road. LOL

So run the hell out of it when it is in 4H...but be sure to slow to 50mph or less before engaging on the fly.

You don't need to be in 4H

Everytime I actually shift into 4WD-Hi I always (when moving) shift the tranny into neutral then shift into 4wd-hi. Seems to be far easier for it.

I used 4-Hi on my 03 Taco during/after storms when I was stationed in North Dakota. It generally wasn't a problem driving 65-70 mph on the packed snow/ice, but if you weren't in 4x4 the wind gusts would knock the tail end sideways. That and you could have drifts 2+ feet tall randomly appear on the back roads. Not cool.... Never had any probs with it & I sold it with 83k, all run up north.

Never ended up in a ditch either.... at least not one I didn't choose to go in.

The only difference I can think of would be overheating. Our temp up there could be -30F, not 100+ desert heat, which might make a difference. Never had to run it highway speeds when it was warm. I also ran all Amsoil fluids.

Why would you want to go 55 or 109 in 4 HI ?

you dont need to but put i certain situations you may need a lot of wheel speed to get moving or unstuck.
