I really H8MUD

My exploring buddy "BushRat" and I were out for a trip up to Spirit Mt. (Western Oregon) when on a 'short cut' home I ended up in the mud PUDDLE. Then mud and them more mud. Did I say now for sure IH8MUD!!! That I would say is just not my thang. I not a super experienced off roader, mostly exploring but do get on some challenging trails - and did I say IH8MUD!!!

Anyway, this is my first post and here is why
IH8MUD!!!

The trail was pretty good until we entered an area where the mud was gooey and ruts about 10'-12" deep. So with little traction (4-low, A-Trac and lockers) I ended up a the mud puddle. Checked it out (not well enough) and got as far as the photo!

BushRat got around me and jerk me out.........

Well before he jerk me out, I went out the back and got my recovery strap and shackle........

Discovering I had not replaced my extra pair of jeans I decided I had to go in in my under shorts.....

Air Temp about 50 deg - muddy water temp: really cold........
I had sunk into the mud up to the bumper. Ever try to attach a shackle in the mud in really cold muddy water??? No fun. I gat it on the first try and ........

Then to get out - already slipped getting in, so down I went again......... jeez it was cold! Did I say
IH8MUD!!!

'course BushRat was having the time of his life photographing the muddy fat man.......
Well with about 6 jerks I was free again and an experience I hope I never repeat.

As I said, this is my first post and did I mention
IH8MUD!!!

Mud holes really can be fun holes.
I guess we've all been there and jeans are the trousers to have.

After a decent soaking they stay wet for hours on end, resulting in chilly chicken nuggets

When travelling in convoy with 2 vehicles, strap them up when you attack it.
2-nd low is a little higher than 1-st High, fully locked, windscreen wipers on full blast and some decent foot on pedal.

Mostly you'll need 2 or 3 attempts for the first vehicle to make it through. Using it's momentum to push the mud out of the way.
The vehicle behind tugging out the lead vehicle each time.

When number one is through, you simply pull the second one through with fluent momentum.

Those bunjee straps are great for this kind of muddy jo-jo style driving.

Oh man, I feel your pain.
And to get down to your birthday suit

I do not do mud at all anymore.
I learned long ago with my '91 4Runner to steer clear of it.
Water is fine, but I do not like the chore of cleaning up the mud, as you nenver really can get it all off/out from hiding places.

I love trails like that, but just minus the mudpits that take hold and do not want to let you go.

Ken doesn't talk much to me now - he'll never talk to me if he sees this on the forum.

We all have similar stories (not the underwear). I especially liked how the truck is relatively clean when stuck in the hole, then clobbered with mud and dirt clogs when it was freed by the first truck. I lived that many times in swamps of FL/GA. That's always funny.

Nice job Ron-

I understand you don't like mud.

Everclear isn't going to be able to help me.

Perhaps Kentucky Springwater in liberal amounts might help.

I may have to sign up for some therapy though.

Great thread. Its always nice to see how we handle the unexpected situation every now and then.

Whew...since I have the same "Homer Simpson" body type as you, I looked just as funny a few months back in PA. when me & 3 others slid down a hill ( a cemetary at that...took out a tombstone!) in POURING rain...I'll give ya major props for sharing those shots!!!

Luckily I lost my camera in the mud that day and wear BLACK underwear!!!

PS: I now keep a pair of jeans, underwear, socks, shoes, t-shirt and a hoodie in my rig along with some mud boots...and lots of terrycloth towels!

Awesome Man!!

That looked like a lot of fun!!

Why else would you get a 4by4 than to get stuck in the mud every once in a while?

Unless you drive a Hummer of course.......

My hate for mud is what drew me to this site initially (and after I was banned on another site...i have mild turret's i think, uh,...sorry).

Mud ruins EVERYTHING... components, morale, traction, wheel balance, sheet metal, control, bearings, pulley's......you get the pic...

I just shelled out 1-k to fix my sheet metal. MUD was directly responsible...along with a live tree.

I declare WAR on MUD...We must ALL CONQUER & DESTROY MUD.

SCOOP IT...BLOW IT UP...SCORCH IT...

I love the smell of napalm scorthing mud in the morning...

OK..Goodnight...gotta get up early and clean my F^%$in' undercarriage.

I mean...just look at the humiliation this ABONINATION called MUD brings humanity...it's like a hospital: Check in, and you lose all sense of dignity!

I alway carry extra change of clothing with me, but that day I had used my extra jeans. When I got home I found my swimming trunks hiding under my ground cover that was under my sleeping bag. Oh, dignity..... I now carry extra of extra. I had rubber boot, but the water was too deep. I might add some waders.

By the photos, are you still there in the muck? That looks like some really nasty stuff.

Ummm more or less. Should have stuck to the makeshift log "bridge"
because on either side was a muskeg stream that feeds a river. After sliding off the logs things went from bad to worse!
I guess I have hard time accepting that whatever your driving, you'll probably get stuck in northern Alberta, you'll never know unless you try it!

there are worse photos he could have been exposed in with his pants off......than a stuck truck scenario. at least he was not at a rest stop like that at 2am. LOL

Sometimes mud is all there is......keep the speed up,work the front end constantly,..... and ,uhm check the depth of anything that is covered with flat calm water. This would be the ideal time to check for the" spare pants" prior to the attempt(ok-haha).....Get rid of the baloney skins if you didn't get AT's,
and after that......its all part of why so much fun comes from so small of an initial cash outlay. I did say, INITIAL, cause after that ....well you probably know.
