How to rig my FJ for bikes and kayaks?
I've only seen a few posts on roof rack options and hitch options. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking about getting a swing-out bike hitch, so I can let my dog out the back before we hit the trail. Has anyone had any issues with the spare tire being in the way? I also have 2 kayaks I'd like to put on my roof, but I'm not sure how to tackle that. I have the yakima J-hull and landshark, but the OEM roofrack is too wide for them. I've seen a yakima universal adapter online, but not sure if it will fit. Has anyone found an attachment that works? Thanks for your help

I saw where someone got Yakima under mounts and then put the kayak braces on it....if i can find them i will bring them here. i was thinking the same but for canoe and bikes....canoe is easy with a couple yakima cross bars on top of rack....for bike the swing away bike rack is what I was looking at or one that mounts to spare tire....i have one for rear deck of car I am going to try....an Allen rack I think it is. Here are some others I was looking at http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?dept_id=8&sku=964 HR225 spare tire mounted racks, rear bicycle carrier Yakima Hitch Mount Bike Racks : 2 inch, 1.25 inch at Rack Attack (Yakima now owns Rhode Gear as well)

I have a Yakima swing away bike rack on my FJ. I am not sure which model it is; however, it holds 4 bikes and the spare tire being in the way has not been an issue. I, too will have a dog soon and the rack swings well away from the door so I can easily open the rear door and let the dog out. I can't help with the kayak mounting issue, but the bike rack has been great.

I built my own hitch rack using two Yackima king cobra trays. the rear door opens as long as the bikes are removed.

hullavator works great
I have the Hullavator for my kayaks and it works perfect for kayaks. It even lowers the boats to the sides of the rig so it's handy if your FJ is lifted. Kinda makes the rig look like a moose and you'll NEVER fit in ANY garage and it's kinda spendy....other than those drawbacks...IT RULES!
