Second Fuel Tank Mod
A little while back I approached Troy Hoffer of Superior 4Wheel Drive about a second gas tank modification. He spent considerable amount of time researching the request and came up with a phenomenal solution.
The DOT approved tank is fitted in the big space under the cargo area, next to the exhaust. The filler neck is accessed through a mini door in the bumper and there is a fuel pump that is manually operated to transfer fuel into the main tank upon demand.
A second fuel gauge indicates the fuel level in the aux. tank and an aluminum skid plate spreads the load in the event of impact. Total capacity is 19 gallons, doubling the range!

Is this available to the market or one off. Contact and price info?

Fuel Gauge
----------
The second fuel gauge indicates the level in the aux. tank. The toggle switch next to it operates the fuel pump and the red light blinks on and off to indicate that the pump is operating.

It is not a one off. Troy at Superior 4Wheel Drive will set you if you call him at (408) 448-8585.
He used my truck to come up with the design and I had a lot of other mods done by him at the same time. He requested that interested parties contact him for pricing information.

Fuel Door
---------
The filler neck presented some interesting problems. At first it looked like the neck would have to come out in the wheel well, but upon further reflection the bumper cutout became possible. Small details like cutting the door at an angle to maximize step area for the roof ladder.

Fit at Exhaust
--------------
The aux. tank seems almost purpose made for the FJ! It angles away from the exhaust to
tuck right into the space. Looking at it head-on you barely notice that there is something underneath the bumper. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the way it all turned out.

The capacity is 19 gallons. I haven't fully topped it off, but it came with about 18 gallons in it.

That is awesome!!! I would be concerned with coming down on that hard on a trail though, i would probably go with a smaller one on my rig, but none the less that is one impressive modification!!!!

Yep, that is my biggest concern - hence the skid plate that will protect it somewhat. You like to wheel your FJ hard, judging by your posts!
I'm more looking at setting up a long distance expedition rig that a rockcrawler, hence the need for a long range fuel tank.

Troy relocated the charcoal cannister, I forgot where to. I haven't had the chance to get the car on a lift or jack stands to fully inspect all aspects of the mod...

Going with a smaller tank will get it up more, however, I think the gating factor on departure angle is still the trailer hitch. Its hard to tell from the picture but it protrudes very little under the bumper. Unless you looked very carefully you wouldn't even notice it.

yes but hi due not have a hitch and i have a highclearance bumper. I was hoping that a 12 or 10 would fit up there with less over hang so when coming down of that ledge or rock you due not wack it.
This is the best mod yet thanks for being the first hopefully we will have more with this soon.

For those wanting a better clearance 10 gallon aux tank..............do you really think it would be worth it from a $$ point of view to buy the tank, mount it, add fuel pump, lines, aux gauge, etc. etc. for a meager 10 gallons??? Just buy two Scepter cans and be done!
IMO it would be very hard to smack something in that location (especially tucked up as it is) to the point of failure. Us 60/62 guys run up to 50 gallon tanks that hang lower and even with our huge back ends, don't usually end up smacking the crap out of our fuel tanks. Besides, you IFS guys run 1/4" skid plating that holds up well to rock strikes, so if you don't like the supplied plating, just have a 1/4" plate fabbed up. From the pics posted it looks like a simple plate to fab and mount.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you are going through the expense and all the work to mount a tank, make it worthwhile from a capacity standpoint (IMO 10 gallons isn't worth it) and armor it up with a good skid to survive the trails.

I talked to Troy today and I got some answers:
Yes, he can put a smaller tank up there for those of you who installed custom rear bumpers for better departure angle. Those of us who have stock setups will most likely hit the trailer hitch first.
No, he does not have plans to build a 'kit' that you install yourself.
As for the most important question of price, he's still think about it. Forum members have been mailing him so he'd better come up with something soon

Very nice design and I like the fact that the vendor can make smaller ones too.
Where is this guy located?

Just called Troy and he quoted me $1200 if I brought the truck in, no kit because the only unmodified part is the fuel pump.

excellent mod, nice to see an aux tank option for your FJC folks!
Couple of observations:
-excellent fitment and a trick fillup. However, those of you wishing for an oem filler neck, please check out the ones for the 80s. We have a nice dual filler neck that may need to be modified for your aplication. Just a thought. Do a search on OEM Dual filler neck in the 80 for more info.
-rather than add a second gauge, why not feed the sending unit stuff to the main tank gauge? Use a switch (DPDT/DPST)and a relay (if needed) between the two tank sending units. Of course, I'd use the same Ohm value sending unit as the main tank so that your gauge can read the aux tank sending unit accurately.
-one thing to consider when wheeling places like Moab or similar, have the rear tank completely empty. That 19 gallon (@8 lbs/gal) will drag the rear end down and smack on rocks and ledges.
-19 gallons is 152 pounds of dead weight. Do you folks have enough spring rate to accomodate this weight plus the usual camping and recovery gear? Just curious. I know that the 80s have a plethora of springs to choose from. If you don't have a huge selection of springs then I suggest using AirLift poly air bags inside the rear coils to supplement this additional weight.
Cheers!

nice to see someone from the "Scissors" weigh in . As far as spring rate, the OME HD springs 896(?) have sufficient rate to handle the extra weight. These give decent lift, but are so stiff wheeling with out a good load they bounce you horribly . I installed the 896 spring with this mod in mind as well as real rear bumper w/ swing away and have considered swaping out to the med duty 895 until I find the bumper and aux fuel option I want .
