facvtory GPS

Saw one at the stealership. looked pretty neat in the dash. Anyone here spring for one yet? Garmin Quest @ about $900.00 installed. A lot of Benjies! I know there were GPS threads a while back, just wondering if any one had the factory unit & looking for opinions.

The one big disadvantage of factory NAV is that it cannot do topo maps- no offroad gps capability really, except maybe accessing the 'breadcrumb' feature but that doesn't really help.

If there is a topo upgrade, let's hear it! Otherwise, the NAV is great in all respects - can't beat the factory look, imo.

Eclipse makes Toyota's NAV. You could look at the Eclipse units for more features (but not the 'factory' look)

FirstToy, I may have misspoken; But the unit that mounts in the drivers top dash is a Garmin Quest II & will take topos. So who's got one & is it worth the price?

ah, Jim S. the Garmin that goes in the cubby on top of the dash. Sorry I missed that - long nite...
I have a Garmin Quest and it does take topos and is a ok gps. The downsides are-
1. slow refresh on the screen
2. smallish screen
3. wish it had more memory (but I believe the Q2 cures that)

even tho those are my complaints, it can't be faulted for the price. For the money, I think it's great.

Thanks, Gona pic it up later today. John Hawker at Sierra Toyota 's a great guy to work with. I believe Rick D. & C. Dan will both agree. Thanks for the help.

I wanted to keep the glove box so I mounted a garmin 2270, between the box and in front of the cumpus.

Mine is mounted left of steering wheel.

Picture looks like it is closer to the steering and controls then it really is. I have plenty of room.

Not factory...

I've been really happy with my Garmin 2720, finally mounted it on dash as shown below.

Does the 2720 load topos? is it also portable like the Quest? I've been planning on getting the Quest II but stalling cuz the screen is pretty small for my old eyes...

I'm not sure about the topo question. It is definitely NOT portable, no battery option.

i've got a Lowrance iWay 250C. only $350. a GREAT unit. very happy with it. nice screen. takes Topo's for more $$. you pay for your region of the country. 60-70 bucks i think. just insert disk. very light weight. no external antenna, runs on battery. don't have it mounted yet. just use the suction cup mount it comes with. alittle far to reach while driving.

I had the iWay 250c and returned it. It took 15 miles of interstate 40 before it could get a fix on satellites. I believe the unit I had had some software issues, but it took forever to acquire and then would lose the constellation. I've heard good things about other Lowrance products, but hated the iWay.

I got the factory one and it works well. I also like that I can close the lid and not have to look at it when I'm not using it. I also like that I can take it out for a hike.

I can't wait to get my rig out of the shop (rear ended by an F-250) to get this new toy into it! I have to say it is much smaller in size and overall screen size, but the ability to hide it away when not in use is what convinced me to buy it! I'll get some pictures once I get it installed some time this week.

I did not observe anyone commenting on saving hundreds of dollars by buying a laptop GPS system for $100 = unlimited memory and upgrades. For me, 'portability' and 'value based upon functionality' are the most important considerations. This setup allows the user to easily move GPS from one vehicle to another. For the past few years I have watched the OE-installed GPS/NAV pricing remain at an average $2k premium. There are other upgrades (aftermarket) I typically want, so buying a software upgrade for the laptop makes this feasible over having to continually purchase new NAV units.

Just throwing another alternative out there for those interested.

Sounds like a good time to upgrade the bumper ... if not I have an almost new one sitting at home.

My NAV unit is great-Kenwood with a built in Garmin.

I can also watch TV, A rear video camara (for the blind spot and trailer hitchin') DVDs, a MP3 player from a USB key, HD radio and Bluetooth phone for hands free.

You can see pics of the factory unit installed in the FJ info books you get from the dealer. I'm guessing that you can get the same unit for much less if you don't order it through the dealer. I really love that Kenwood unit that has the Garmin software. Looks great in the dash and for just under 1,000 I think it is way better than the factory unit.

I got the wrong info book mine doesnt show the optional accessories, and the other toyota dealer said they had given all their books away. I looked at the Navigation/Radio's and really liked them but I need to be able to take the GPS out of the vehicle when I go backpacking or peak climbing. The Quest II seems to fit the bill. You can buy the GPS by itself from newegg.com for $400 but the dealer installed package has a custom mount and, Im guessing, hidden power cables. From what they tell me you can un snap the GPS from the mount and take it with you, snap it back in to charge.
Dang Toledo, you got your FJ decked out How were the Bud Built skids to install?

Dont know if anyone is interested in it or not but I asked a dealership to send me information about installing the Quest2 GPS with FJ mount and they sent me the factory installation .pdf manual. Pretty detailed information. Email me if you want it: eloodo at cableone dot net

My NAVI is an OEM unit, from A 2005 Toyota Camry.
And then added the Eclipse BEC106 backup and FEC106 side view cameras, OEM XM radio, Lexus DVD player, Vaistech adapter for the iPod, Microphone for the voice activated navigation.
