Why are my tires rubbing?

Why are my tires rubbing? I got new tires and a 3 inch lift and every time I turn the tires rub on something... Should I put the stock tires back on?

It just proves that girls just get screwed dealing with anything auto. I guess I need to take a trip back to the tire shop. They told me no way will these tires rub... I cant even find the size on them!

Go look at the sidewall and you should see a number such as 285/75/R16. Whatta ya got?

Your tires are 32.7 inches tall X 11.2 inches wide.

The "285" is the width in millimeters. The "70" means that the height of the sidewall, from the ground to the bottom of the wheel, is equal to 70% of the tire width. The "r17" means they're for 17" wheels/rims.

285 x .70 = 199.5
199.5 divided by 25.4 to convert it to inches = 7.854
7.854 X 2 (to get the upper and lower portion of the sidewall) = 15.7
15.7 + the wheel size of 17 = 32.7 inches tall for the tire

285 divided by 25.4 = 11.2 inches wide

Now you're a tire expert.

Good choice on the Toyo's by the way. Are they Open Country A/T or M/T ? (should say on the sidewall)

You should not have a problem - I've been running the same size tire since May with a 2" lift and not a rub. Look in the wheel well for spots where it looks like you are rubbing, kinda a clean or smeared spot. When was the lift installed? Did you have the lift before the tires or was it installed at the same time as the tires?

I ask because many tires are not true to the size they say on the sidewall - they're generally smaller. Toyo's on the other hand, at least the MT's, ARE true to their size.

I had the rims installed then tires and lift...

then the running boards then the racks... hmmm whats left? ooh ya tint. Thanks for the info on the tires. Its always good to know what tires you have

I now know that I have A/T toyo 32's with 17 inch rims...Right

I'm running BFG A/T's (I thought) 33" measurement, at 40 psi on the road, so they are at their size. If the offset on your rim is inboard more than the stock, it can also cause the rubbing. Offset being where the mounting (lug nut) part of the rim is relative to center of the tire.

I was curious so went to my garage and measured - 32" to center as they sit. Geez - measure twice speak once...

So, ahhh it's nothing major then... I'll just ignore that grinding/crunching/rubbing sound . I was hoping that it wasn't caused by the debris I ran over on the 57 freeway. You guys are so helpfull!

I have some rub on mine, with my toyo 's MT 33, but I could live with it..

what wheels did you have installed? The backspacing can have a big impact on rubbing.

Hey there monniepoo,

Park rig on level road ( empty parking lot) with wheels turned to the point they rub.

Apply parking brake (put tranny in park if auto-tranny),

get out & look....

A clunky , ripping kind of noise could indicate the tread is 'just' interfereing with some body mount or body portion.

Condolences about your hubbie....I know it hurts, but it will get better...

the reason you are rubbing is the offset and/or width of those wheels. check the wheel well area and you will find clean areas where the tires are rubbing.
Most likely by the mudflap or at the front of the tire (the backside of the front bumper)
also check the upper a-arm to see if there is any rub mark there.

depending on how much rub there is, it could be just an annoyance but if it's too much, you could tear something off while offroading when you really cycle the suspension.

Those are the EXACT tires I've got on my FJC. I have no lift, an 85-pound steel bumper, and no rubbing whatsoever, but I did trim the body mounts and take the front mud flaps off. But mine are on stock 17" alloy wheels. Your rubbing is either from the wider wheels as previously noted, or from the body mounts.

It must be the body mounts. For anywhere from $150-$375 depending on how 'professional' you need it done, the mounts can be trimmed or redone. Nothing is worse than tires rubbing under normal driving conditions on the street. The body mount fix is a must.

Based on what has been writen on this thread I would agree your problem is most likely the Backspace on the wheels. They should be able to tell you what the BS is and that might be important to know, also you might want to ask them what those wheel were meant to go on they may know that.

The BS on the FJ is way different than the 40, 55, 60 & 70 series and slightly different than the 80 series. I can not confirm for sure but I think it is differnt than the 4runner and possible the Lexus GX470 (all members of the Prado family).

Just curious, what lift do you have installed on your FJ?

One thing you really should keep in mind, the wrong or a different BS is going to change the handling of your FJ. Could make it better or could make it worse.

BTW I called the place where I got the tires and lift and today. I explained the rubbing and they said... Yeah, that will happen. We can put your old tires back on...

Again, it sounds like it is probably the rims - you should speak with the provider and ask for the correct rims for your vehicle (or at least confirmation thst these have the proper offset/backspacing). They should be able to swap rims out with no trouble. 285's and lift should not cause the rubbing you are seeing. Hope this helps -

When I went to 295's I had to trim the frame by the body mounts. For some reason toyota put a full loop around the mount. It's an easy fix, most off0road shops will trim the mount and weld a steel plate there, @ $150.

What is the "proper" wheel width and BS (either offset or backspacing) for stock FJ Cruiser 17" wheels?

I've seen several of you recommending this to Monniepoo but nobody is giving her specific information on what she can tell the tyre store.

I do agree w/ others that the offset of the aftermarket wheels is the cause. However, this is not serious.
monniepoo, thanks for posting the pictures of the rubbing. I bet most of the noise is coming from the front plastic, as that 'echos' when hit.

A simple solution is to zip tie it up to slightly push it out of the way. It is a large, unsupported piece of plastic so it can be manipulated very easily.

The rear will probably clear by removing the mudflap- I am going to guess you don't want to loose the mudflaps so I say live with it at the back- I don't think that is making any noise and the surface is smooth enough that you won't rip anything out while wheeling.

The mount was designed with safety in mind, and it will withstand a side impact with less likelyhood of it riping off or allowing the body to rip off.

removing the mud flap will no solve the problem for the back part of the wheel well, it is sitting right up against the body mount sub frame.
