Looking for advice on 1993 FZJ80 Radiator replacement job

I have had my new-to-me 1993 80 (225,000 mi) for about a month now and I new that it had a few...

I have had my new-to-me 1993 80 (225,000 mi) for about a month now and I new that it had a few issues when I bought it, one of which is a leak at the radiator tank seam. The leak doesn't seem to be that bad at this point but of course it's only going to get worse and possibly leave me stranded and cost me a tow at the very least. I have read several posts on here about radiator replacement and have bought a KOYO C1917 to replace it. Before anybody shames me, I just can't afford the $600 OEM one.

My coolant has a nasty brownish color to it and I don't know if this is because the PO had mixed red and green coolant like I have read about on here or if it means something else.

The guy I bought it from didn't seem to really know much of anything about cars in general from the questions I asked him and he acted like he didn't know it was leaking but who knows how honest he was being with me.. he said he had owned it for a year and a half and his wife wanted something smaller with better mpg... he seemed like a nice guy but you never know about people especially when they want to sell something...

so I'm wondering if this color could be because of some 'stop-leak' product that was put in the radiator? I've never used that stuff so don't know what it would look like in there.

can the stop-leak stuff ruin a water pump ? In the last couple of weeks, there have been 2-3 times that I've noticed a slight squealing sound that reminds me of when my water pump went bad on my old truck...

I also have a small power steering leak (slow drip) and I don't know if the PS would make a similar noise if that pump is bad ?

Also looking for advice about what all I SHOULD do while I'm replacing the radiator?

Obviously, new hoses/clamps/thermostat ... but are aftermarket hoses and thermostats good enough from autozone or O'Reilly or Advance or NAPA? seems like the consensus on here is that NAPA has the better parts in general?

Should I just go ahead and replace the water pump and fan clutch while I'm doing this? I have no idea if they are the original 17 year old ones or what.

I don't even know what all is done at a shop with a coolant system "flush" so another thing I'm wondering about is, should I take it somewhere and have the cooling system flushed out good BEFORE I put my new radiator in ?

My thinking behind this is that if there is gunk elsewhere in the system and I put the new one on and then have it flushed that some gunk could end up getting into my new clean radiator but I have no idea if this is anything to worry about or not...

when I replaced the radiator on my FJ40 several years ago, I just stuck the hose up to the hole where the water pump attached and ran some water through there until it ran out clear but I'm not sure that was the best thing to do now... I don't know if the shops use chemicals to get rid of .. deposits ? or whatever might be in there?

Hey everyone

I have no plans to do this in the near future so this is pretty much just a curiosity question.

Would installing limited slip differentials in the front and rear of the truck have the same or similar affect to the factory front and rear lockers? I know they wouldn't lock, and would only work when the wheels are slipping, but would they be a good alternative to not having lockers or anything?

There's also the air lockers. How complicated of an install would that be? Which would be a better option if I decided to do it sometime in the future?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Not sure if anyone has had this issue but...... i just bought a new battery for my landcruiser in july 09..... i may have driven it 3 times since and started it up at least once a week.. about a week ago i started the vehicle up as a precaution( the cruiser isnt being driven right now becuz i am doing alot of exterior mods to it and body work). A few days after my last start up, the battery was completely dead. This is the second battery that has died but not this fast....

Does anyone have any idea that would drain the battery COMPLETELY out in such a short time?

While over on the west coast last night I noticed the brake pedal was very soft. However the pressure came up with a couple of pumps. I checked the fluid level then continued on carefully thinking it was just air in the system.

Earlier in the day I had noticed a slight rubbing noise, but nothing really significant.

The steering then started pulling hard to the left and by the time I had pulled over to look there was a strong smell of burning and smoke was coming from the front nearside wheel. There appeared to be fluid dripping from the swivel and everything was hot. I then tried to move further into the lay-by and the resistance was such that i needed to slip the clutch quite violently to even get it to move.

We were in a hurry so I had to leave it there and continue in a friend's car. Heading back over on sat to investigate but just wondered if anyone had any ideas?

I'm thinking either wheel bearing given up or caliper seized?? :hhmm:

Can the 80 run cutting brakes without destroying the drivetrain?

I want to go get an idea of what I'm in for before I go ahead with this. I'm asking because I haven't heard of anyone who put cutting brakes on their 80

I have a mostly stock 80 with a cdl and 7pin mod. I don't have front and rear lockers.

This is more of just something fun to mess around with while I'm offroading. I'm not looking to use this as a substitute for front and rear lockers. I rarely even lock the center:D

I hate it when I don't bookmark something I read earlier, then can't find it again with a search!

I have a '95 80 that will be needing an engine (the PO partially disassembled the one in the truck, and I can tell some parts are missing). I will be looking for an entire USED engine assembly (long block)......that being said, what year 1FZ's are directly compatible? IIRC, a DIRECT swap for a 95 is 95-97. Is that right?

I don't want to have to modify/retrofit anything, so is '95 the cutoff date or can I go earlier than 95?

Thanks, and I'll try to do better about bookmarking in the future.
