A high pitched squeaking noise comes from the gearbox when in neutral and when in gear at low speeds i can hear, as i reach higher speeds it is drowned out.

when i even rest my foot on the clutch an inch or so the noise goes away, also when clutch fully depressed it is still not there,

i believe this is due to the throw out bearing?
correct me if im wrong

so my question is,

if the bearing is to be replaced does the clutch have to be?

and if the clutch is replaced does the flywheel need machined?

any other things to consider?? like the rear main seal

thanks in advance ! i've never touched the gearbox/clutch area before
I now have very noticeable gear whine. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Will the noise decrease on it own? What steps can I take if any to quiet it down? Or should I be returning it to the installer to re set up the gears?

This is in reply to a 'Mud member who is having trouble with their 4WD system.

================...

This is in reply to a 'Mud member who is having trouble with their 4WD system.

================

The most common issue is the solenoids (also called VSVs or Vacuum Switching Valves).

If the 4wd mechanism works when you apply vacuum to the lines that go to the transfer case, then you need to figure out the VSVs.

1. check to see that you're getting vacuum to the VSVs. The line I am holding is the common vacuum supply line to the VSVs. The other end of this like goes to a junction near the alternator vacuum pump.

Photo 1 - below

2. The top VSV (white in this picture), allows vacuum to pass when the 4WD switch is OFF or when the transfer case is in high range. In LOW range, the transfer case has a switch that is activated by the shift fork position that engages 4WD via power to the lower VSV (grey) and no power to the upper (white) VSV.

With the switch in 2WD and the transfer case in HIGH range, take the hose off and check to see that there's vacuum at at the fitting on the white (upper) VSV. The line I am holding goes to the vacuum diaphragm on the transfer case to disengage 4WD.

Photo 2 - below

3. Check that the lower VSV is allowing vacuum to pass when the 4WD button is depressed or when the transfer case is in LOW range. The plugs on the VSVs are keyed so that they can not go onto the wrong valve. The lower VSV should have power, and the upper VSV should not have power.

Photo 3 - below

4. Check that vacuum is not passing through both VSVs at the same time! Only one VSV should allow vacuum to pass at any one time.

Typically VSVs will fail to open, but it does happen that one will stick into the open position and allow vacuum to pass all the time. If that happens, the effect of the other VSV will be null.

5. You can also check that you are getting power to the VSVs at the various switching positions.

If you need further help, please post and I'll try to answer as soon as I can. There are a few others here with excellent experience who can add info or correct any mistakes I have made.

HI.
Have a BJ74 which is giving me a huge headache with the 4LOW system for 4w drive. Once engaged into 4 low (hubs locked etc) the front wheel dont move. Realized that the centre diff does not lock. I have no H4 Button. Have come to realize that the vacuum soleniod may have issues even though the vacuum still works. But sometimes it engages other times it fails.
Have now locked the centre diff manually. Front and rear diff working during normal driving. So I just need to lock the font hubs and I will be in H4.
Wanted to know:
1. Can I mess up my front diff by doing that (locking centre diff manually). I can always open it up and unlock it. The hubs however are not locked during normal driving.
2. Where can I get a vacuum solenoid and H4 Button / switch from. The button is 4 pin so I cant use any other kind of switch. Here no one has anything. Is there any alternative or will I have to import it? Can I use parts from the 75, 78, 79 or 80 series. The 79 series is the local toyota dealers sole car they sell so they will be stocked. Is the vacuum solenoid the same as the BJ74?
3. The 4wd (4low) does not enage . Changed the vacuum switches, bearings, checked cv jints, front axle, diff, but nothing. The light on the dash board showing the 4wd, sometimes the rear diff light, switches on other times it doesnt work. Have no idea why? What could be the problem?

Thanks a lot. PS Im in Kenya - East Africa

We are having a small problem with this fine toy.
DAFFY at the river on the way back just before he got married to a ROCK and I had to reverse in to rescue him.

I recently drove it for a couple of days after we had the radiator removed and flushed out after the above trip.

It is very rev related to the temp gauge. Doing anything more than say 85k in 5th gear with the 35'' sneakers on will and does cause the temp to start rising. If going up a hill even a long slow one or a short one of say 200 meters and 5deg slope will after a while the temp rises and soon as you put your foot down even for the last 50 meters the temp rises. We knwo the RAD is clean. We know the thermo is working. We are not running an intercooler. In the rain it is fine which implies it is directly related to atmospheric conditions e.g. hot days.

We are looking at a new RADIATOR with a another core in it and wide fins and more capacity. We are also toying with going electic fans (2) .

Before we go down the path of a custom radiator and maybe a small intercooler is there any other ideas for the overheating issue?

regards

Did the same to the other side and the same thing happened. There has been no water ingress into the truck at all, Checked the outside and can see no cracks or holes so that leaves just the side windows as a possible cause. However i wouldn't think that there would be any opening to let the water in. A bit of a mystery that's got me stumped. Anyone had anything similar happen or any idea where the water came from.

my BJ74 came with a bad oil pressure gauge. In fact, the PO's post regarding it is still on Mud. Anyway, I have replaced the sending unit and the gauge... and it still doesn't work.

When I pulled the old gauge out, it was melted.

If I pull the sending unit wire off, I do not measure a short to ground. So, I am assuming the wire from the cluster to the (new) sender is fine.

Questions:
what is the resistor for on the back of the gauge cluster?
What resistance should I measure at the sending unit?
What else can I check?

thanks!

Gday all,

After finally getting my '86 BJ74 on the road after replacing the brakes, i drove it for a few hours during the day. Then it started making a horrible noise and vibration upon acceleration. I pulled into home quickly, but couldn't find anything obvious. I checked all the oils (transfer took 1ltr to fill.....) and tried it again to no avail. Without going fast, it goes along fine but seems to "grab" every now and then makes a loud clunking noise. I rolled it backwards and looked underneath to see the rear driveshaft "grab" and clunk... it sounds like it's the rear diff.
I drained the diff, but there was nothing in there.

Any help appreciated.....

Hello All,

While waiting for my front axle kit to arrive, i decided to do a dual battery install for the coming winter. I have the cold starting issues with my truck, so having an extra bettery helps.
Here is my Setup.
1. Old Canadian Tire Eliminator battery 875 CCA. Also bought battery tray, assorted fasteners, and anti rust black paint on sale on princess auto.
2. New 850 CCA Walmart Energizer starting/charging battery ( larger size)
3. Sure power systems 100 Amp Continous Duty Battery isolator with Aux Start Feature.

I already had the wire for the manual glow plug activation, i wired it to the isolator instead.

The Winch is now attached to the Aux. battery.

If you have any questions, let me know.
