Alright gentlemen, I have a 1 bbl carb and am lost. Cant find any directions as to what I am looking at with this guy. My rig is a 65; this carb is off of a ?? model but close enough to my year I think. It has 2 ports on the base of the carb - 1 (GREEN) is the air fuel mixture screw - 2 (RED) is just a threaded hole. This is the way this guy came to me. Is this for vacuum advance or is it another adjustment screw that I am missing? It has constant vacuum and increases when acceleration happens. ???? All help will be appreciated. Also, a picture that I ripped off of Coolermans web. Danke ;)

Birf to inner axle...got it done

I'm doing a rebuild of the 1970 forty series, and I've torn the axle apart to do a minitruck disk...

I'm doing a rebuild of the 1970 forty series, and I've torn the axle apart to do a minitruck disk swap. Anyways, I've been dreading pulling the axles apart to do the swap out. I got the axles apart pretty quick with the pipe method. No real problems there.

After cleaning out the Birfs and removing the axle snap ring parts, I fooled around with getting the 40 inner with the minitruck birf. I read Guppy's post about using screw drivers and a helper with a BFH. I wanted to try to get 'em back together on my own so I tried a few things-- none worked. I went in & ate, then thunk for awhile.

I decided to try squeezing the outer ring with a piece of plastic tube & a hose clamp. It worked like a charm. The hardest part was to align the birf ontop of the axle correctly.

What I did was find a piece of plastic 1.5" pipe, cut it to a width of about 2cm, took a piece out so it'd squeeze the snap ring & stuck a hose clamp over it. I lined it up & also moved the inner snap ring down so it have room to move when I pushed the birf down on it.

I put the birf on the axle and whacked it with my trusty oak 2x4. I had to readjust the plastic clamp the first time I tried it as the snap ring didn't seat right. Anyways, the only problem I had is that sometimes you'll move the birf down too far and you have to seat the second, larger snap ring back up & check it so the inner axle and the birf are solidly connected.

The toyota part numbers for the two are 90520-28036 for the larger snap ring and 90520-27091 for the birf's snap ring.

Hope this helps someone out.

Here's the axles test installed after grinding the axle housing.

I have a 77 FJ55. I live and have to smog my rig in California. I just finished re-smogging it, and it passed. It's still in need of an air by-pass valve- and most recently, a distributor, ignitor/coil, and an exhaust manifold. I have at my disposal a very nice 3 piece exhaust manifold and set of rings and springs, a head from a 74 F engine, and access to a complete 2F from an 82 FJ40 for $$$750. The problem I'm having is deciding to swap in the 82 engine w/ all its apparatus to keep it smoggable; or to swap out my head for the earlier one, re-furb the manifold, track down an air by-pass valve, drop coin for the dizzy and ignitor, and milk the ol'2F block a while longer. Pros for the engine swap are: PS bolt holes, wedge chamber head, complete factory smog gear, dizzy in block, a motor to grind on this winter, and a running truck(hopefully). On the other hand, if I re-worked my set up, I won't inherit a spaggetti monster, it'll be more "original", I'll hopefully gain a little juice from the head change(prolly be the same as a later, fresher motor), and I'll save a bit of cash. The 82 swap will prolly cost about $$$900 bux, the re-worked 77 maybe about 650 w/more down time and no spare motor. ANY thoughts would be welcome, and I will need to make a decision w/in days. THANK YOU.

I've noticed the body seams on my FJ40 are getting weathered and exposed, and there are light rust traces there. Also, the seam on top of my hood leaks, and fills the top of the intake manifold up with little lakes of water.

I do not have the time or budget to strip and repaint. So I'm wondering in the meantime if there is a way to reseal these areas when the weather is hot again?(Sealing them now would trap moisture.)

The fuel smell in the cab is getting old....

The fuel tank has a couple lines coming out of it that went back to the canister under the rear passenger 1/4 panel that are now plugged.

So without a vent, the tank appears to be "venting" through the sending unit o-ring.

Since I no longer have the canister for the rear 1/4, what have you done to vent the tank?

Help with install of '76 dizzy & ignitor/coil....

I had a '79 2F put into my bone-stock '76 last winter and they put the '79's electronic ignition in...

I had a '79 2F put into my bone-stock '76 last winter and they put the '79's electronic ignition in at the same time.

Jim C. was good enough to point out that my '76 originally had a dizzy with vacuum retard and the dizzy from the '79 was vacuum advance......not good.

His suggestion was to either go back to the '76 setup or de-smog and use the '79 stuff. Since I'm in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, I have to keep the smog junk....so back to the '76 we go.

I still had the dizzy from the engine I replaced, but didn't have the coil/ignitor (which is specific to the '75-'77 because it has points, but still has the ignitor piggy-baking on the coil). I sourced another coil/ignitor (thanks to FJ40-40) and cleaned them both up.

I have a couple of wiring questions to get answered before I'm ready to do the swap....

First, the wire on the dizzy was clearly replaced....was this supposed to be the red wire that comes from the ignitor?

Where does this black wire go? It starts at the negative side of the coil.....

At the coil/ignitor end, what is the black wire with the yellow stripe for (the smaller gauge one with the bullet connector, not the larger gauge one that goes to the positive side of the coil)? Also, what connects to the black wire with the white stripe and green connector?

At the dizzy end of things, I have the red wire and the black wire with the white stripe. I'm assuming the red one goes to the dizzy, but what about the other one?

When I receved the coil/ignitor, there were two other wires that were attached to it - this white one attached to the negative side of the coil and.....

....this black one attached to the ballast resistor (I also circled the black one on the left that is a question-mark):

As always, any help is appreciated. Once I figure out the wiring stuff, I'll have some questions about dropping in the dizzy......:hhmm:

Thanks guys!

I've looked at this truck a couple of times now and i'm thinking about picking it up. just wondering what you guys might think of the vehicle and whether it's a good deal. The price is quite high and the seller is only willing to budge a bit, to $14K. The body has be redone recently and its in good shape, there is a little bubbling on the back left corner and the right side of the vehicle leaks, there was a small puddle in it when i saw it today due to the rain.

i'd like to take it into the bush eventually but for the most part it will be used in the city and to get me through the winter. So my other main question is what tires can i put on the vehicle so it lessens the choppy ride. i know it's no lincoln but the softness of the mud tires on there now makes me fee nauseous when driving it. the shocks are fairly new and were changed a couple of years ago so i'm assuming its the tires i'll need to change to help with the ride. that being said, how much of a difference will this adjustment make? lastly any recommendations for winter tires?

here is the vehicle...

I aquired a small horde of parts the other day. Among them was an idler gear that, according to the owner, was supposedly some sort of conversion gear? It's got some surface rust, but I couldn't find any markings when I cleaned it up with a wire wheel.

I don't have any other t-cases torn down at the moment to compare. It has 39 teeth on one side, and 27 on the other. There were several other loose gears in the pile as well, so maybe it was an old low-range kit?

Maybe this is a long shot, but does anybody know the tooth count on stock idler gears of various vintages?
