Thought I'd throw this out there for you guys. I am a big fan of these tires, same as the "ST" however they are the cut resistant "C" tires, specifically designed for rocky/mountainous areas. These were on my truck when I bought it, set of four has to be well over $1k new. They are about 80%, quiet on the road but good traction off road. In my opinion, they are a trade off between a full on mud terrain and an all terrain. The only reason I am thinking of selling them is I'd like to move up to a slightly larger tire. There is a possibility that I would sell them on the 16" steel wheels currently on the truck. If interested, shoot me a reply or PM. I'm up in Kelowna.

F.O.R. Suspension impressions.

Well- we got the suspension installed and the ride and handling are really incredible- (I put a few pics up in 80s tech). The suspension now conforms to bumps in the road rather than trying to flatten them out! I am down to 3.5 " front and 4.25" rear lift. The most interesting thing is the lesson I have learned in correct suspension geometry. It seems when you have a multi link suspension and some of the angles of the 'dangly bits' are not correct, the suspension will not move, flex or articulate. This is most noticeable to me via my truck exhibiting a hint of nose dive while braking a d rise while accellerating. Before- it was like a rock and wouldnt flex at all, just kind of jiggled- with all kinds of strange body motions. It just felt wrong. Like it was working against itself. Now it is supple yet controlled. (sounds like a hair product advert!) The caster plates were a bit of a bitch but I have picked up about 3 inches of 'down travel' despite the fact the lift is about 1.5 " lower. I guess the lesson taken from this exercise is this- If you want articulation and a controlled ride, putting a taller spring on an 80 is just the beginning. The angles and arcs of every control arm/panhard/link/bar/bushing must agree. (at least I agree!)

From OP:

Hi,
Yesterday the toyota dealer sent me another Landcruiser to my shop like they always do,the don't like to touch those Landcruisers.
This one is a 1996 HZJ80 from Germany, the older couple have been travelling south america, usa and canada for 3 years now,l did an oil change and was checking the truck and found the radiator has a small leak,it just happen that l have a new rad for a 1993 FZJ80 waiting to be installed, still doing the headgasket on that one.
the rad is the same except the shroud mount,l am making a bracket for the top and it should be done tomorrow.
specs:1HZ,5 speed,no fenderflares,parttime 4WD,lockers.
They are heading west to Vancouver from Winnipeg and then they are heading to Alaska,Inuvik by december 31st,they on to the iceroad north of Inuvik,l forgot the name of the town.
Very brave people.

Well- I've been driving my 81 for almost a year now and put on around 20,000km (I thought it was more). It cost around $100 per week in fuel, I can't estimate what the associated running costs are, but I can say it has been 100% reliable- the only failure is the bulb in the rear defrost switch.

I've been thinking of getting a Subaru Sambar pickup for work and retiring the 81 to weekend status. I figure the fuel savings alone will offset the Subaru cost of ownership and then some- leaving me in a position of net savings. The Idea is that I will buy the Sambar through my company and use it as a dedicated business vehicle with something like a metal Jobox type thing bolted to the bed.

I could then clean up the 81 and do all the little detail touch ups to it and it wouldn't be getting beat up by the tools and parts etc. Or I could sell it- who knows? Anyone with any experience at this type of thing?

Decided to fix the broken hubs rather than go and buy new AVM hubs for the other Safari. These hubs are auto hubs but can also be manually engaged. I'll likely mod the hubs by taking out a small spring to make them manual hubs. Got a local machinist making up two spacer rings and some metal tabs - see pics below. On one hub the spacer is completely broken and the other has a crack. The metal tabs are also either broken or on their way out. The tabs are what locks or unlocks the hubs manually. The machinist tells me that they are spring steel and he can't cut spring steel - so I will have to harden them after he's done making them. My question is how many times should I heat them to cherry red and dip them in oil to get them about as hard as spring steel? I don't want them too hard or they will just shatter.
Not Land Cruiser related, other than I'm sure there are LC's around the world. If you choose to, the animal rescue site listed below needs traffic. No scams, nothing to sign up, just a mouse click. If you go to the "About our projects" page, there is some good video from the Philippines after Typhoon Ketsana hit.
