Ok, I am looking at trading my Dodge Ram for this 88 Cruiser! I wanted to get some last minute thoughts from the 60s owners collective!!

Attachment 373649

LOTS of Pictures are here in my webshots account

shinton1970's photos and albums on webshots

Biggest things I am looking for / anything I need to look for when I see it in person for the first time? Especially engine / trannywise?

Rust in the roof is pretty bad / so I realize I will be doing some repairs there, but not really afraid of body work, you can see my other threads / folders in webshots and understand why.

What am I looking to do.... basically turn this into a very nice around town rig, that I can take to my farm, down to the OBX for fishing and very light trail riding.

ONE major question - will 80 series rims with MTRs fit on here nicely with no lift? 285/70/16 is the size. Got access to a set - otherwise will want to swap a bit more aggressive tread on there. NOT wanting to lift!!

Is there cruise control on these beasts? Does the GX mean anything as far as model?

The rear bed, looks to me like they "repaired" it with fiberglass? I have the invoice in front of me and the "repair" was $200. They spent $1753 all told for new carpet, recovering the seats, etc.

In theory this was owned by the owner of Toyota Dealer in Wilmington. But I just cannot understand how / why he let the roof get that bad of shape...hoping that does not mean he let the mechanicals go too..

This is on a 86 fj60. I pulled the head today and noticed that there was quite some buildup of rust and debris on the headgasket itself where the coolant ports come out of the engine block. Please see pics. I am wondering if this is normal? I just want to make sure that the PO used the proper year headgasket?

Also, wanted to post up some pics of the bottom end of the engine. The compression before I tested it looked very good, all cylinders around 150. The walls of the pistons look good to me as well. I also cranked it over by hand several times and it seemed fairly smooth. Any opinions on the attached pics appreciated.

thanks,

I'm going to throw this out again. Love my truck and love the suspension seats but I don't love the lack of leg room. I've had the driver's seat out and stared at it for a while trying to brainstorm a relatively easy way to increase it's rearward travel for legroom but couldn't come up with anything. If I don't get any responses maybe I should pull the seat again and post some pics up for all my friends to the south to have a look at!

Ok, you guys had pretty much convinced me that a 2F-E was the cats meow and had plenty of power. I just towed a buddy's 80 about 15 miles with my stock 2F----man, what a suck!! My 2F runs great; it's totally desmogged, new Trollhole carb, other than that it's stock. Starts at the turn of a key, pulls hills at 75, yadda yadda yadda. Those same hills with the 80 behind it wasbembarressing---2nd or 3rd gear and about 30-35 was all it wanted. Got up to 45ish on level ground. I know the 80 is heavy but dang, I've towed just as heavy with a 4.3 Chevy without near as much trouble. So for you 2F-E guys, is it that much better? Can you tow another vehicle comfortably? Should I just go V8 and be done with it? I thought I could deal without much power just fine but this was pathetic.

A little history: Rebuilt carb (JimC) and motor that has about 20k on it.

I have started noticing a slight miss at idle- no power loss, no miss under power. seemed to get worse after changing my plugs. I noticed on the plugs coming out that there was some carbon buildup on top of the plugs towards the firewall. I used OEM plugs.

could it be my wires? I am full desmogged. Just put a new fuel filter trying to diagnose no change.

the wierd thing is that sometimes it will idle fine. I checked the plug wires and they sat a little loose so i clamped them down and it helped a little.

sorry for the rambling.

The Whys and Whats of a lift

Okay, color me ignorant (but not stupid) concerning lifting a vehicle. I have a 1986 FJ60 with flat...

Okay, color me ignorant (but not stupid) concerning lifting a vehicle. I have a 1986 FJ60 with flat rear springs - even with an extra leaf.

I don't see a single source of information on this. I have read many threads on various aspects of lifting, especially on the HOW, but not the WHY nor the WHAT - that, like many things, seems implied for the reader, but never having done it before, there is a learning curve (like so many things - that is what makes it fun - and this site so great - so much info)

What I do know is that a lift:

1) helps tire clearance
2) helps body clearance
3) may require extended shocks
4) may require extended break lines
5) may change alignment and other "geometry" metrics
6) comes in various heights (1", 2", 3", 4" and higher)
7) may change driving characteristics
9) may be under the axle or over
10) There are different manufacturers (OME, BDS, others)

What I don't know is:

1) What are pros/cons of each of the various lift heights.
What are the drawbacks for a 4" over a 2"-3"? What are the advantages?

2) What are the advantages for the different shackles? Cons? I have read several threads but don't know all the options

3) Are UBolts the same or must they match with the spring vender?

4) Same for other parts.

5) All the different parts: pins, bushings, grease fittings (on shackles?), etc

6) How long do they last? I have read some posts on just a few years, yet stock go decades - then maybe they don't and they are zombies

7) Exactly what length of lift is actually measuring? Say, a 4" lift is adding 4 more inches from axle to bottom of body? or something else?

8) Is the lift accomplished by just the spring "height" - more curve? by the shackle? or a combination of both?

Understanding this helps to plan for a lift AND to present valid argument to the wife on why this is useful, especially when she is short (5'4") and I am tall (6'3") and one needs to climb into this vehicle

thanks

First off - yes, I have searched for "Insurance" and read the threads here. But... I could still use some advice.

 I'm trying to find insurance for my nearly-completely-rebuilt '88 FJ62 and am having a hell of a time finding a company that will let me stipulate the value. They all say, "well, if there are add-ons that increase the value, we could consider that..." but nobody wants to consider what I paid for it or even look at what similar vehicles are selling for on eBay Motors or anywhere else.

Does anybody have a policy with a stipulated value or a company who seems to be willing to take an honest look at the vehicle's value, or a company whose policy has an appraisal clause?

If so, could you please post what company your insurance is with?

Thanks,
Bill
