1HDT ticking - getting worse

I know these engines make some ticking noises pretty much normally. Mine, however, has been steadily getting louder over the past few months. On idle, it sounds fine. Rev it up and it sounds fine. While driving there is a fairly loud ticking under very mild acceleration, or coasting. It sounds like it is coming from the RH side but I cannot tell for sure. Did I mention that at idle the sound is gone? Very difficult to diagnose when the sound only occurs while driving. The sounds is kind of metallic, but not overly alarming. Kind of sounds like fingernails tapping an aluminum can.

More information: the sound only manifests itself after the engine is warm. This leads me to believe that it may possibly be ACSD related - even though that's on the LH side.

History: oil level is good - been running 15W40 Rotella T. Only using genuine Toyota oil filters. BEBs were replaced this summer. The sound was there before the replacement, and did not get worse immediately after replacement. I have a very small bit of oil weeping down the LH side of the block. But oil level never drops on the dipstick. The PO removed the stock air cleaner and fitted a cone K&N. I've just cleaned and re-oiled this.

I have not checked the valve clearances yet. I've been enquiring about where to get shims before I pull the valve cover. But the sound was basically not there last winter.

So, ACSD? Valves? Or something else? Truck runs beautifully despite the sound - a bit smokey (gray and black) but has plenty of power. The ticking is ruining my driving enjoyment though.

Id really like to get a block heater installed this winter and I think a freeze plug style unit would be best for my application. Has anyone fitted one of these to a 1HZ? The 3B plug is apparently 35mm, and according to toyoDIY there is a 35mm freeze plug on the left side of the 1HZ at the #4 cyl. Think it would work? Anyone tried it?

OK Cruiser pals....I've been monitoring, now I need to ask. I've got a 1978 BJ40 that just arrived from NZ this summer. It pretty much rocks. Only found a small bit of cancer on it. My goal is to get it to "daily driver" status. Not too far to go. (Restoration will come in a year or so...don't tell my wife!)
Here are my questions:
1- How long do you have to warm the glow plugs? I was advised 20 seconds, but the indicator doesn't glow until about a minute or so goes by.
2- (And this is how I know my indicator glows after a minute....) My glow plug relay seems to be stuck in the "on" position. It is heating the plugs with the key switch rotated to the rear, like it is supposed to, and when the truck is running with the switch in the "run" position. (it doesn't in the "accessory" position.) I don't enjoy the idea of throwing down $120-200 for a new one so is it absolute heresy to put a push button switch in the circuit to turn it into a "push button glow" system until the relay totally fails. At that point I'll replace it and take the switch out.

The steering fluid in my '90 HDJ81 looks a bit ratty and I would like to flush it out. The FSM and the reservoir cap recommends ATF fluid, but what's in the pump now is a clear fluid (a bit yellowish from age). Does Toyota have a special ATF made for steering pumps? Part Number will be much appreciated.

BTW, the pump works perfect currently, no noise, squeal or leaks. It is just the fluid look old and smell a bit burned.

Cheers,

Hi guys,

I bought a turbo + bits from someone off a forum for my 3b and its all good. The kit is installed (std manifold NOT flipped) and it was advertised as being sold with a BOV.

Talking to others on a different forum (outerlimits) I have been advised that what I thought was a BOV is actually a pop off or relief valve.

i would like to get a better understanding of what its there for and how it will affect things when I'm trying to adjust the boost.

Now as the 3b has a throttle butterfly, what does this mean when you change gears or get off the throttle and the butterfly closes. Is this going to adversely affect the turbo in any way (make it spin backwards, etc)...

how can I confirm its a releif valve and does a turbo'd 3b need a BOV?

here are some pics from my turbo setup which might make things clearer.

Relief valve is the silver circle thing on the piping.

cheers,

on my canadian spec hj60 24v
my heater fan has always been pretty lame but now it doesn't work at all.
I ordered a replacement motor and got to work trouble shooting as per the the toyota repair manual. the switch tests out fine and then I moved on to the relay...
the relay is not there? there is a space for the relay but no relay?

so the questions I have are:

how could the blower motor have worked at all without the relay?

I could only find one part number "8591390K00" for this relay and I am having problems locating one, anyone know of an aftermarket or oem replacement source?

I know my resistor was on the fritz before the whole thing stopped working (only the two top fan speeds worked) where exactly is the resistor? I will take a pic of what I think it may be and maybe someone can tell me if I am right, (also a source for the resistor would be awesome, cause I cant find a replacement anywhere.

In the mean time at least I can clean 20 years of dust out of my ducts.
