Alright, now I have a 2000 Toyota 4Runner with an open differential in the rear. I have found a 1999 4Runner locally that has been in a front end collision and has been written off and being parted out. I'm wondering if I am able to remove the third member from the 1999 4Runner with the LSD and directly swap it with my third member? I did quite a bit of searching but unfortunately cannot find any useful information on the 3rd gen rear ends. Are the axles the same size, and do they have the same spline count?

If it is needed I could possibly get the V.I.N.'s of each vehicle if that is going to make a difference.

Thanks

Hi,

I just finished replacing the rear brake shoes on my Tacoma. The old shoes had very little wear after 60k miles, so I was surprised when I had to tighten my e-brake cable. Had to tighten it by over an inch at the adjustment screw!

What might the problem be? I tightened the shoe adjuster until the shoes just began to drag the drums, and I didn't have any problems with the reassembly.

I have a 99 parts car that I had a new muffler welded up to, so to save 50 bucks I was going to swap the exhaust (cats and all) over to my 97. Only thing is, on the 99 it has two small cats one after the other and the 97 has one large one. I am pretty sure they are both still stock and I am wondering if the change to two cats is an upgrade for performance? More emissions restrictions or what? What do you guys think?

Hey all, new to the forum and have a ? about a 1997 Hilux double cab diesel I found at a Gov't auction. How feasible is it to swap out the 2.4 (worried about finding parts on the overseas engine) and go to a regular gas engine? Can parts from a Tacoma be used (interior, seats, etc)? I will probably not bid if its to much hassle to convert.

I just finished replacing the little seals that fit on the pistons inside the rear brake wheel cylinders.

What a bear!!!

I ruined the tips on both thumbs trying to stretch the new seal over the end of the piston so I could slide it into the seal groove. Don't know how I finally did it but it took about 20minutes each!

I still have one wheel to go. Is there some technique to doing this? The darn things are so slippery!

Swapped an e-lock rear into my '02 4Runner and am now working on wiring it up. Been folowing this...

Swapped an e-lock rear into my '02 4Runner and am now working on wiring it up. Been folowing this first schematic, but want to do something more stockish for the lock detection switch indication. So after figuring out that I can't just steal the "RR Diff Lock" light/indicator on the instrument panel out of an older, used-to-be e-lock equipped truck, I've come up with a new thought about the indicator/light. What if I rerouted the wiring going to the indicator LED in this wiring digram to go back to the light in the rr diff lock switch? So the result is that the rr diff lock switch itself becomes the indicator light... Would I still need the resistor in-line before the light?

And would this be correct for the new routing:

OLD // NEW
12v line connecting before pin 5 on rr diff lock switch -> resistor/LED // 12v line before pin5 -> pin 3 on rr diff lock switch
LED -> pin 2 diff lock dectection switch // pin 4 rr diff lock switch -> pin 2 diff lock detection switch

Dose that make sense?

Here's a crappy photochop of what I was thinking. Red is my changes. Would this work?

At least I think that's what they said it was called.

At any rate, mine is apparently bad. The 4Runner will shift into 4WD, but only if I'm going about 5mph or so. I'm told this is about a $1400 job to replace the unit.:bang:

So, any advice on having this done? I do oil changes and that is about the extent of my ability and time.

While the diff is out, which is why they say it costs so much, anything I should have done at the same time?

Thanks, and I look forward to being a part of the forum. I'm pretty new to Toyota's, and I don't do the hard core off-road stuff, but I love trail riding and such.

Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum, and new to my 4Runner. First time oil change, and I'm stumped. It is a 2002 Sport Edition with the skidplate package, etc. How in the world do you get to the %&^*^ oil filter to remove and replace it?

I'm used to simple things like my F250 diesel. Lay in one spot and reach everything. What moron put a filter not only upside down on the engine, but also where no one that isn't double-jointed can get to it?

Thanks very much for your assistance, I can't believe I had to ask for help on an oil change.
