Last addition to the hunting fold. 280 Rem

Picked up a 280 Rem barrel for my Encore yesterday. Custom shop order that the original owner paid for over a year ago and was never heard from again. Base, bull barrel and camo forend for $250. I am excited about playing with this cal. Should be a great fit in between my 25-06 and 30-06.

30-06 in my opinion is the best all around gun you can buy and the first one a hunter should own. But then as you start adding speciality cal to the fold it just keeps moving farther back in the safe.
223 for fun.
22-250 for varment
243 for small deer and kids to use
25-06 is perfect for white tail around here
280 is my new choice for mule deer
30-06 in the back of the safe along with all my lever brush guns. (i.e. 30-30, 35 marlin, and 44 mag)
7mm STW for Elk

Ok so long story short some buddies and I are heading out this weekend for a backcountry flyfishing trip, seeing as it is deer season and I actually bought a license this year I figure I'll bring the 30-30 along for the off chance that a buck wanders by. While the trip is from Friday through monday if I kill a deer on Saturday is there any plausible way to preserve it till We hike out Monday? Temperatures should be low 30's by night mid 50's by day. I've read up on hanging the deer at night and covering it in the shade durring the day, but I do not want to waste an animal. Any advice on this? Skin or don't? Leave the gun at base camp till Monday morning? Smoke it mountain man style? Anything is appreciated

Oregon Dept of Fish & Wldlife (ODFW) cites in their 2010 big game regs a California study that...

Oregon Dept of Fish & Wldlife (ODFW) cites in their 2010 big game regs a California study that using non-lead bullets has reduced lead exposure rates in California Condors by 40% and that 93% of successful hunters say that non-lead bullets said it performed as well or better than lead bullets.

Lead, once in the bloodstream, remains. So how they could determine a drop of 40% in this short of a time period sounds suspect, unless they've been able to capture and test a lot of second generation or third generation condors. But not with first generation.

And the complaints about bullet performance are pretty high. Particularly from varmint and rimfire hunters. While there are some effective and accurate big game non-lead bullets, the higher velocity and smaller size and mass of varmint bullets apparently is pushing the envelope at this point in time. Group sizes are larger, and fliers are common. Rimfire shooters are pretty much SOL, at least for 22LR, but 22 WMRF non-lead is available, works, is accurate, but expensive.

Hunters Embrace Lead-free Ammunition Regulations

In fact, look at the wording in this fluff article by Center for Biological Diversity: "Hunters Embrace Lead-free Ammunition Regulations". Makes it seem like every hunter is behind this. Until you read the story, where it is stated "9 percent of hunters in California have been in compliance". Compliance is NOT the same thing as "embrace".

Anyone have opinions on these? Good purchase? fun to shoot? customizable?
I have an AR, and have been thinking of getting another AR. I should apply the money toward that, but would consider this in addition to another AR if the price is right and comments are favorable.

First, my apologies to everyone (and the deer) for the awful pics (cell phone). My Canon is STILL….in the repair shop!

Thought I’d take my “Hog Gun” on a deer hunt this morning. Actually, I was scouting a stand site for my Daughter who had to work this weekend.

The .458 SOCOM hit this buck like a bolt of lightning, DRT!

I was checking to see if this buck was still in the area:

I’ve been watching him since last year and decided to let my Daughter take him this year if we get the opportunity.

This morning about 8:00 a.m. a single Doe came scooting across a small food-plot I have planted back in the woods. She was acting very nervous, had both ears cocked backwards and was “cranking” her tail. I knew from her behavior…that she was in estrous (or about to be) and that a buck would not be far behind.

Sure enough, less than five minutes passed when “Jessica’s Buck” came trotting onto the food-plot. He had his nose down following the scent trail left by the doe. I could easily have shot him…but resolved to save him for Junior.

A few minutes later a small 7 point came through (same trail, same urgency).

I thought I’d stick it out another 30 minutes and see just how many bucks would follow the doe’s trail. I didn’t have to wait long …before the buck pictured above came “bird dogging” along.

When he hit the middle of the food-plot I stopped him with a soft whistle. I knew I would have only a few seconds to evaluate him before he would take up the trail again.

Lets see…..3-1/2 yr. old, good body weight (180 lbs. on the hoof) but pretty much everything I DON’T like to see (antler wise).

He had decent width (19-1/4” inside), but lacked tine length and mass for his age. “Needs to come out of the gene pool” was my immediate assessment. The SOCOM spoke, the buck never took another step…and I have my “Sausage Meat” for this year.

All things considered….. a pretty good morning.

Flint.
